Majin Boo is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball manga series by Akira Toriyama. Majin Boo makes his debut in Chapter 460, published in the 1994 #13 issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump.

Biography

Majin Boo is a magical entity who serves as the final antagonist of the Dragon Ball manga. Initially presented as innocent and naive, Boo undergoes several transformations into more malicious forms over the course of the series. In the epilogue of the manga and in all subsequent fiction, a good version of Majin Boo is seen living with Mr. Satan at his mansion.

Prehistory

Though he is rumored to have been created by the sorcerer Bibbidi, Majin Boo is actually magical entity who has existed since time immemorial, cycling between bouts of rampage and long hibernation.[1] According to Doctor Arinsu, it was the Great Witch Marba from the Demon Realm who created Boo at Bibbidi's request.[2] Approximately 5 million years prior to the events of the series, Bibbidi starts using Boo's fearsome power to subjugate much of the universe.[3] During Bibbidi's campaign, Boo kills two of the universe's highest gods, the Kaiōshin, and absorbs another two into his being. Upon absorbing the Dai Kaiōshin, Boo's appearance and personality alter drastically. This new, rotund Majin Boo is naive and manipulable, possessing a strong craving for sweets. Boo's new nature allows Bibbidi to more easily control him,[4] though the sorcerer still stores him in a spherical cocoon while moving between planets. The surviving Kaiōshin and his attendant Kibito eventually kill Bibbidi on Earth, his next target, leaving a hibernating Boo sealed within the planet, as humanity has only barely begun walking on two legs and is unlikely to disturb Boo's seal.[5]

Revival

In Age 774,[6] Bibbidi's son Bobbidi sends two henchmen, Spopovitch and Yamu, to gather energy from strong fighters at the 25th Tenka'ichi Budōkai—in which Goku, Gohan, Vegeta and others, along with an undercover Kaiōshin and Kibito are participating—with intent to revive Majin Boo. Yamu and Spopovich successfully steal energy from Gohan, and are able to lure the Kaiōshin, along with Goku and company, to Bobbidi's underground spaceship.[7] While at the ship, Goku and Vegeta are provoked into a fight, which provides the remaining energy for Majin Boo's revival.[8]

Majin Boo proves unexpectedly strong, easily killing and consuming Bobbidi's right-hand man Dabra in the form of a cookie with his Transfiguration Beam,[9] and severely injuring both Gohan and the Kaiōshin.[10] Vegeta gives his life in an unsuccessful bid to kill Boo, who recovers via his nearly unlimited Regeneration.[11]

Majin Boo begins threatening the Earth under the control of Bobbidi,[12] before being confronted by Goku, who engages him as a Super Saiyan 3.[13] Ending their match prematurely, Goku goads Boo into killing Bobbidi.[14] For a time, Boo strikes out on his own, razing cities for fun, and using citizens of one town transmogrified into clay to build a small house for himself.[15]

Attempting to end Boo's destruction and maintain his reputation, Mr. Satan tracks down Boo at his house and tries to kill him with a number of booby-trapped gifts, all of which prove ineffective. Mistaking Mr. Satan's attempts to kill him for signs of genuine affection, Majin Boo makes Mr. Satan his servant,[16] and the two slowly form a bond. Mr. Satan eventually asks Boo to stop killing, to which he agrees.

Soon after, two thrill-killers, using the chaos caused by Boo's rampage to hunt humans for sport, shoot a puppy named Bee, whom Majin Boo previously healed.[17] Mr. Satan fights off the killers, though they soon return and shoot Mr. Satan himself. Boo manages to use his magic powers to heal Mr. Satan, but is overcome with anger and ejects a cloud of smoke which materializes into a second, thin Majin Boo, the embodiment of his evil.[18]

The second, emaciated Majin Boo does battle with the original, before deflecting a Transfiguration Beam and consuming him. The second Boo then undergoes a further transformation into the muscular Evil Majin Boo, with power far exceeding either of the two previous Boos.[19]

Now capable of sensing energy, Boo flies up to God's Temple[20] to battle Gotenks, against whom Goku had earlier promised him a match. After Piccolo attempts to stall him by suggesting Boo continue to kill the remaining humans so Goten and Trunks can continue to train, Boo unleashes a rain of energy blasts that kill all remaining humans on the planet, save for his former friend Mr. Satan and those such as Tenshinhan capable enough to dodge the attacks.[21] Boo and Gotenks do battle in the Room of Spirit and Time,[22] from which Boo escapes by rupturing a hole in space-time after Piccolo intentionally destroys the entrance. He then proceeds to transmogrify and eat everyone remaining at the Temple, before Gotenks and Piccolo follow him out.[23]

Boo battles a newly strengthened Gohan after Gotenks' fusion time runs out,[24] and after a losing bout, turns the tables by absorbing Gotenks and Piccolo into his being.[25] When Goku shows up looking for a partner for Potara fusion, Boo absorbs Gohan as well.[26]

Boo faces off against Vegetto, a fusion of Goku and Vegeta,[27] who allows himself to be intentionally absorbed so the two can attempt to free everyone inside Boo. Wandering through Boo's body, Goku and Vegeta discover the original, fat Majin Boo trapped in a cocoon.[28] Vegeta tears the fat Majin Boo free, prompting a further transformation.[29]

Now diminutive and less powerful than before, Boo assumes the form of Pure Boo, whom the Kaiōshin recognizes as his original form before absorbing the Dai Kaiōshin. Though he may be less powerful, this Boo is pure evil and instinct. His first act upon seeing Goku and Vegeta is to immediately destroy the Earth.[4]

Goku and Vegeta manage to escape via Goku's teleportation, and lure Boo to the Kaiōshin Realm for a final battle.[30] During the fight, the fat, good-natured Boo re-emerges and aids Goku and Vegeta in the fight.[31] Goku is able to kill the pure Majin Boo with a Genki-Dama consisting of energy from every person on Earth. Prior to landing the finishing blow, Goku wishes Boo could be reincarnated as a good person so they could have one more fight.[32] His wish is granted in the form of Oob,[33] whom he meets and agrees to train 10 years later during the the 28th Tenka'ichi Budōkai.[34]

To help the good Majin Boo adjust to normal life, six months after the battle in the Kaiōshin Realm, Goku and his friends use the Dragon Balls to wish for Majin Boo to be erased from the memories of the populace. They instead remember only vaguely that they were saved by Mr. Satan from some vague catastrophe.[35] Following the battle in the Kaiōshin Realm, the good Majin Boo lives with Mr. Satan and Bee at Mr. Satan's mansion. He routinely places runner-up at the Tenka'ichi Budōkai under the moniker Mr. Boo, eliminating weaker fighters before feigning defeat to Mr. Satan.[33]

Battle of Gods

In the film Battle of Gods, set within the ten-year interval between the battle against Majin Boo in the Kaiōshin Realm and the 28th Tenka'ichi Budōkai, Majin Boo attends a birthday party for Bulma and provokes a fight with God of Destruction Beerus, to whom he refuses to give up a single cup of pudding.

Resurrection "F"

In Resurrection 'F', Majin Boo does not participate in the battle against the revived Freeza. In the manga adaptation of the film, he is mentioned to be sleeping.

Dragon Ball Super

In Dragon Ball Super, Majin Boo is recruited for the Universe 6 and 7 God of Destruction Invitational Tournament, though he is disqualified before being able to participate in a single match due to failing a written test designed to exclude unintelligent monsters—either because he falls asleep (TV series) or fails to achieve a passing score (manga).

He is subsequently recruited for the Tournament of Power, but enters a two-month hibernation prior to the start of the event.

Dragon Ball GT

In Dragon Ball GT, set five years after the events of the 28th Tenka'ichi Budōkai in an alternate continuity to the events of Dragon Ball Super, Boo continues to live with Mr. Satan and Bee, protecting the former when Baby takes over the Earth. After following Baby to the restored Planet Tsufru, Majin Boo permanently merges with Oob in order to provide his reincarnation more power. He remains a source of spiritual guidance for Oob, prompting him to allow Mr. Satan to maintain his reputation when the two confront each other during a Tenka'ichi Budōkai.

Appearance and Forms

During the course of the series, Majin Boo undergoes several transformations, each of which drastically alters his appearance and personality. All forms maintain his putty-like body, singular antenna, and holes along his head and arms for releasing steam. No names for the individual forms are given within the series itself. All terms below are sourced from Daizenshuu 4.

Majin Boo (Good)

The first form of Majin Boo seen in the series, this form is the result of Boo absorbing the Grand Kaiōshin and incorporating his visual and character traits. Pudgy and joyful, adorned in a black vest and purple cape, Boo is subject to the whims whatever influences surround him, whether good or evil. This form of Majin Boo befriends and eventually lives with Mr. Satan and their dog, Bee, eventually adopting the moniker of Mr. Boo.

Majin Boo (Pure Evil)

This is the form of Majin Boo expelled from the good Majin Boo after Mr. Satan is shot. In contrast to the good Majin Boo, this form is sickly thin. He is said to have taken the majority of Boo's power. This form of Boo exists only briefly, before transmogrifying and consuming the good Majin Boo and transforming once again. In both the anime and the Full Color manga, Majin Boo (Pure Evil) is colored brownish-gray in contrast to other forms' vibrant pink.

Majin Boo (Evil)

The third form of Majin Boo seen in the series, this muscular form boasts a power superior to either of the two previous Majin Boos, and places his vicious tendencies at the fore. He has the power to sense ki and is overall more equipped for fighting. While in this form, Majin Boo undergoes three subsequent transformations as he absorbs additional characters, with his appearance and personality altering to match the absorbed Gotenks, Piccolo and Gohan in that order. Despite his altering appearances and personality traits, the Daizenshuu refers to all these forms as Majin Boo (Evil). Initially simple-minded and focused on fighting and killing, Boo's intelligence increases with each subsequent absorption, to the point where he is able to communicate grammatically and use information acquired from his absorbed components to psychologically rattle opponents like Goku and Gohan.

Majin Boo (Pure)

This is the name given to the diminutive, original form of Majin Boo, the final form seen in the manga. Though physically less powerful than Majin Boo (Evil), his erratic behavior renders him an equal or greater threat. The soul from this form of Boo is reincarnated into Oob.

Name

Majin Boo's name, in tandem with Bobbidi and Bibbidi's, references the magic words featured in "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo," from Disney's 1950 animated film Cinderella. Similarly, all of Bobbidi's minions feature names sourced from recognizable magic words.
