Synopsis
As the Tournament of Power which they can't afford to lose approaches, Vegeta and Bulma have had their second child. With now one more thing to protect, Goku puts even more effort into selecting the members to compete. In the midst of this, he goes to Kuririn and No. 18's home and invites them to participate in the tournament. Goku's unexpected offer comes as a surprise to Kuririn, who has already retired from the martial arts. He agrees to participate, but No. 18 refuses, so Goku lies and says that there's a ten-million Zenni prize if they win. Then Gohan, who is anxious about Kuririn's ability, proposes a match against Kuririn! How does this test of strength turn out? And what does Goku think after watching their battle?![1][2][3][4]
Summary
Goku and Gohan fly off to recruit Kuririn for their team in the Tournament of Power. Kuririn is still busy working as a policeman: foiling bank robberies, catching criminals, acting as a traffic guard, giving directions to old ladies. He's swamped! Goku and Gohan butt in and ask for a moment of his time, heading back to his house to chat with him and No. 18. They explain the rules of the Tournament of Power (no killing, contestants lose by ring-out, etc.), and Kuririn thinks that under those conditions he might be able to handle it.
No. 18 encourages him too: after all, if he doesn't do stuff like this, then all that exercise equipment they keep on the second floor will go to waste. Goku asks No. 18 to enter too, but she turns him down. She's not going to work for free, and besides, she's got to take care of Marron. Goku suggests they just get Bulma to look after Marron, but now No. 18 is curious why Goku is so insistent she enter. It's just a friendly tournament…isn't it?
Goku and Gohan decide not to spill the beans about how losing universes will be destroyed, so instead Goku lies and says the winning team gets ten million Zenni (meaning one million for each member). This entices No. 18, though she still has her suspicions. Kuririn wonders if their main objective all along was just to recruit No. 18, but Goku assures him that's not so. They definitely want him!
Still, Gohan runs through a quick scenario in his head, and doubts whether Kuririn could keep up at the tournament. He decides to test Kuririn out in a sparring match adhering to the tournament rules. Everyone heads to some rocky outcroppings on the seashore for the match. No. 18 thinks that Gohan looks a little too serious for a mere tournament, but Goku assures her that he's just focused on the prize money. It's a whole hundred million Zenni, after all! No. 18 notices that Goku had said ten million before, but he brushes her off.
Before the match begins, Kuririn tells Gohan to remember that this isn't a fight to the death, but a tournament match with proper rules. Does he understand what that means? Gohan thinks he does, and the match kicks off. They trade blows for a bit, and Kuririn thinks Gohan isn't fighting seriously. Before long, Kuririn busts out a Taiyō-Ken…but not just any Taiyō-Ken. This one's new and improved! Even closing one's eyes doesn't block its effect, and in addition to blinding Gohan, it also prevents him from sensing Kuririn's ki. With Gohan off-guard, Kuririn quickly knocks him off the rock and into the water. Ring-out!
Kuririn names this new technique the Taiyō-Ken x100. He really has been training! Marron is thrilled that her dad won, and Gohan acknowledges his defeat. Kuririn apologizes for catching him off-guard, and vows that with his skills and experience plus Gohan's power, they'll win the tournament. Kuririn now confidently offers to join the Tournament of Power, but Goku wants to spar with him too!
The group changes location to atop Mister Satan's skyscraper. They've cleared everything with Satan, so they can fight all-out. Still, with the tournament not that far off, the two had best avoid overdoing it. No. 18 figures that Kuririn is still tired from fighting Gohan and is initially against the match, but Kuririn insists on doing this now. No. 18 warns him that the Taiyō-Ken x100 is a surprise attack, and probably won't work a second time. Kuririn's got to be careful, since he's fighting Goku himself! But Kuririn knows that better than anyone.
Marron worries that her dad will lose, but No. 18 assures her he'll win…though inside she seriously doubts it. The rules are once again the same as the Tournament of Power, and Kuririn is reminded of when he and Goku fought as kids at the Tenka'ichi Budōkai. As it starts to rain, the match begins.
Kuririn starts off with a volley of Kienzan attacks which Goku dodges, before seeming to launch into another Taiyō-Ken. But this is merely a feint, and he instead fires off a series of ki blasts. In addition, the Kienzan attacks from before start homing in on Goku. Goku now becomes regular Super Saiyan, and No. 18 is impressed at how well Kuririn is holding up.
The fight continues, and as Goku touches down on a corner of the skyscraper, the building starts to give way underneath him. Kuririn had cut that section with four small Kienzan earlier; the three big ones were just a distraction. It may be called the "Tournament of Power", but strategy like this will be necessary too! Impressed, Goku becomes Super Saiyan Blue. This time, No. 18 admits that strategy won't do Kuririn any good; the gap in power is simply too great. But then, the Tournament of Power will be a battle royale…
With Marron still cheering Kuririn on, he and Goku both charge up a Kamehameha and begin a beam struggle. Just as Kuririn is getting overwhelmed, No. 18 jumps in from the sidelines and knocks Goku's blast away. No. 18 wants the match to continue, except now with her and Kuririn against Goku. It's a battle royale, after all, and so won't always be one-on-one fights. When strategy won't work, there's always cooperation!
Kuririn offers Goku to have Gohan join him, but instead Goku reverts to his base form. That's enough! This match has shown him that he hadn't really understood what the tournament was going to be like; he and Gohan learned a lot. "You're my best friend! I'm counting on you!" Marron interrupts this turn of events as meaning her mom and dad won and is overjoyed (though Goku protests that he didn't actually lose).
With the match over, Goku asks No. 18 is she knows where No. 17 is. He's never met No. 17, but hears he's super strong. No. 18 has spoken with him on the phone, and learned that he's working at a wildlife preserve these days, though she didn't ask where it's located. Goku finds this an odd career choice (No. 18 was surprised too), and Kuririn suggests that Goku go ask Dende. Being God of Earth, Dende sees all kinds of stuff and so might know No. 17's location. Goku thinks this is a good idea, and heads off to ask.
Only thirty-eight hours remain until the tournament!
