Shila is a fictional character in the Japanese animated series Dragon Ball GT. Shila makes her debut in episode 4, which debuted on Fuji TV on 28 February 1996.

Biography

Shila and her partner Gel are the secondary bodyguards of Don Kia, the dictator-king of Planet Imegga. (His primary bodyguard is Redict.)

After Trunks, Goku, and Pan make an emergency landing on Imegga, Shila and Gel are tasked with requisitioning their spaceship. The Earth trio returns from the city just in time to see the spaceship being towed away. As they chase after it, Shila and Gel report to Don Kia while he eats an Imegga Parfait. They tell him that they have recovered the spaceship discovered by the security team in a desert to the east. The ship appears on a screen, and Shila tells Don Kia that they have never seen a ship of this type before, so it must come from an unknown planet. Don Kia only wants to know whether it has any value, and when Shila tells him it does not, particularly, he wants to know whether there are any cute girls in the crew who could be marketed to talent producers, but Gel informs him there was no one aboard. Don Kia tells them to disassemble the ship so it can be sold as scrap.

Meanwhile, the Earth trio follows the tracks of the tow trailer and infiltrate the palace to steal it back. Shila and Gel arrive to ask what is going on as Pan is driving the tow trailer toward the exit. Shila and Gel attack with a combination ki attack, which Goku counters with a Kamehameha. He overwhelms their attack but then Redict interferes, knocking aside Goku's attack.

Don Kia reprimands Shila and Gel for the stolen spaceship and damaged dock; for as much as he pays them, they are worthless. Behind him, Redict objects to this, and Don Kia turns around to assure Redict that he was only talking about Shila and Gel. They apologize, but Don Kia calculates the damage to the dock and tells them it will come out of their pay. He asks about the interlopers, and Shila tells him they were caught on the surveillance cameras, so he takes a look at the screen, surmising they plan to repair the ship and escape Imegga. He resolves not to let that happen. Meanwhile, Trunks inspects the spaceship to see what parts they need. They return to the city to try to buy parts in the marketplace, but everyone closes up their shops as soon as they see the trio. Then Trunks notices that there are wanted posters with their likenesses on them. Sirens approach, and they decide to run away to avoid the police. Giru warns them that police are approaching, so they run to hide. Shila and Gel arrive to aid the search.[1]

Gel and Shila lie defeated.

Shila reports to Gel that the interlopers are coming this way, but Gel is promptly felled by Goku's foot. Then the Earth trio falls through the roof of the home of Riruka and Esuka, temporarily hiding them from their pursuers. After Riruka and Esuka inform them that their entire slum is populated by people from other planets who have had their spaceships stolen by Don Kia, they decide to turn themselves in. Shila and Gel are terrified as they approach to surrender, but the soldiers handcuff them and take them inside the palace. From there, the Earth trio break their shackles and incapacitate the guards, including Shila and Gel.[2]

Production

Nakatsuru design.[3]

Shila was designed by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, the head character designer for Dragon Ball GT.

Name

Shila's name (シーラ shiira) is possibly derived from the pre-Euro Austrian currency, the schilling (シリング shiringu). This would fit with her partner Gel likely being named after the German word for money, Geld, and Planet Imegga's overall money theme.

Shila is never named in the dialogue; she is only named in the credits and the official closed captions. In episode 4, Don Kia refers to Shila and Gel as Gel-chan-tachi (ゲールちゃんたち). The -tachi suffix is pluralizing, including all those who accompany Gel.

Notable Skills

Gel and Shila's combination ki attack.
  • Shila can perform ki attacks in combination with Gel. They form their energy balls separately before combining them into a single ball that becomes a single beam when they fire.
  • Shila and Gel appear to teleport in their first appearance, but their voices are heard before they appear, and no mention is made of this, nor is any explanation given. This sort of imagery is also used when characters move very fast, though it is not clear why they would do so in this context.

Performance

Shila is voiced by Megumi Urawa, who voiced Erasa and young Oob in Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Kai. In Dragon Ball Super, she voiced Ogma, the Kaiōshin of Universe 5.

In the Funimation dub, Shila is voiced by Laura Bailey, best known as the voice of young Trunks in Dragon Ball Z.
