Summary

High above Planet Vegeta, Bardock and a force of Saiyans make their last stand against Freeza. From their ship a safe distance away, Coola and his men watch on. They observe a single Saiyan pod containing a baby escaping, but Coola refuses to fire on it saying that it is his brother's mess. Years later, Coola learns of his brother's defeat and orders his men to track down his killer, a Saiyan from Earth. Finally home from Namek, Goku has resumed training at Kame House. The Turtle Hermit looks on as Goku fires ki blasts into the ocean. Some time later, Gohan is studying at home with Chi-Chi looking on. Goku encourages him in his studies which causes Chi-Chi to fear that something terrible happened to Goku while he was away, but Goku is just impatient for Gohan to go camping with him and his friends.

Finally free of homework, Gohan, Goku, Kuririn, Oolong, and Hiya Dragon camp in the wilderness. They hardly have time to even notice anything amiss when they are attacked by the Coola Armored Squad. Gohan and Kuririn are quickly knocked out, but Goku arrives from catching dinner and is able to easily hold his own against Thouser, Neiz, and Dore. As Gohan flees the scene, Coola arrives and tries to blast him from afar. Goku protects his son, but takes the hit head on and is knocked unconscious, falling into a lake and down a nearby waterfall. Coola orders his men to find him.

Goku and Gohan hide in a cave, but Goku's wounds are serious. Coola's squad level the forest with ki blasts to try to draw Goku and Gohan out. Coola reveals that he could easily destroy the Earth at any time, but his pride requires that he defeat Goku directly. During a break in the bombardment, Oolong and the others discover Goku's now-collapsed cave and rescue them. Goku sends Gohan off to Karin's Tower to bring back senzu beans to heal him. To keep from being spotted, Gohan will have to avoid flying and ride on his dragon's back instead. Gohan and Hire Dragon fly off. Gohan arrives at the tower and climbs the rest of the way up, but Karin initially refuses to give him any beans, saying that he cheated by riding his dragon up part of the way. Gohan is about to jump down to do it over again, but Yajirobe interrupts and scolds Karin for being too strict, throwing the bag of beans to Gohan. But Karin was keeping one bean to himself, which Yajirobe also takes and throws to Gohan. The boy places this final bean in his belt.

On his way back, Gohan feeds a bean to the exhausted Hire Dragon, allowing him to fly once again at full speed-- but this is too much energy and the pair show up on the squadron's scouters. They engage Gohan and have the upper hand until Piccolo arrives to rescue him. Piccolo sends Gohan off to his father and takes on the team. He has no problems with Dore, but Naise captures him in an electrical field. Seeing the fight has been won, Thouser races off to stop Gohan... but Piccolo was just pretending to be captured. He turns the electrical field back on Naiz, frying him. Piccolo gives chase to Thouser and the pair descend lower to battle in the forest. Piccolo uses his arm-stretching technique to catch Thouser unawares while the squadron member uses a powerful ki-blade to topple trees against the Namekian. Piccolo once again has the upper hand, but Coola arrives and challenges him, allowing Thouser to resume chasing Gohan.

Gohan arrives at his father's hiding place and hands over the bag of beans, but he is too late: Thouser arrives and fries them from afar with a targeted ki blast. Kuririn challenges the squadron member, but he is outmatched and knocked aside. Just as Thouser approaches Goku's cave again, his scouter explodes! Goku has recovered, thanks to the senzu bean that Gohan tucked in his belt, and is ready to fight.

Before they can engage, Coola returns and appears to kill Piccolo in front of Goku. The Saiyan is enraged and just ignores Thouser's attacks. Goku and Coola finally begin their fight, in the air and underwater. Goku seems to be doing well, but Coola reveals that he has one more transformation than his brother: an even more monstrous form. Goku realizes that his new ki is even higher than Freeza's! Now, even with kaiō-ken, Goku is losing the battle. Coola easily breaks through and batters Goku to near unconsciousness. Now that Goku is defeated, he prepares to destroy the whole planet!

Lying on the ground, Goku thinks of all of his friends who have fallen because he could not save them. He watches as a little bird succumbs to its wounds, collateral damage in his battle with Coola. Enraged by the loss of life, he turns Super Saiyan and somehow heals the bird with his yellow ki. Now transformed, he is much stronger than Coola and once again takes the upper hand in the battle. Distracting him with a ki blast, Coola powers up his planet-busting attack and sends it at the Earth. Using all his might, Goku is able to push it back, striking Coola and sending him all the way into outer space and straight into the sun. Goku is knocked unconscious by the exertion, but everyone appears to have survived the battle. Gohan is sad that Piccolo is nowhere to be seen. Suddenly, Thouser appears and prepares to fight the wounded heroes. All seems hopeless, but out of nowhere a Makankōsappō suddenly hits Thouser, putting him down for good. Gohan looks around to see who it was, but no one is there. Once again, peaceful times have returned to the Earth.

Notes

This movie was released in theaters just after episode 99, while Goku was still facing off against Freeza. Although the manga was much further ahead, the anime had not yet revealed how Goku won or how he returned to Earth. This makes the events of this movie a "spoiler" for fans who had only watched the animated format.

In addition to its odd placement, the film also features a few other departures from the anime:

  • Goku appears to have returned to Earth immediately after defeating Freeza. He does not appear to know Shunkan Idō, instant transmission.
  • Goku has not yet fully mastered the Super Saiyan form. He does not appear to be able to access it except in moments of rage.
  • Gohan still has his tail.
  • Piccolo appears to be more reserved than in the anime or recent films, only emerging to rescue Gohan and then remaining aloof from the group.
  • Like the previous films, Hire Dragon reappears as Gohan's pet

Daizenshuu 6 places the events of this film later, after Trunks's arrival but before the androids.

The final sequence where Coola falls into the sun uses a scene reminiscent of the opening theme to the original Dragon Ball.

This is the first film not to include Bulma.
