Cell is one of the primary antagonists in the latter portion of the Dragon Ball manga series by Akira Toriyama. Cell first appeared in Dragon Ball Chapter 361, although his origin stretches back to the Red Ribbon Army, introduced in Dragon Ball Chapter 55. Cell is an Artificial Human, one of a long line of such created by Doctor Gero for the express purpose of seeking revenge on Son Goku. Unlike the other Artificial Humans introduced in the series, Cell is not given a number designation and was grown in a lab from an embryo rather than being purely robotic or adapted from a human base. Cell was designed to merge with Artificial Humans No. 17 and No. 18 to achieve his final, "Perfect", form. The Cell that is primarily depicted in the series is the Cell from "Cell's Timeline" who traveled to the prime timeline using an alternate Future Trunks's time machine to seek out Son Goku and achieve his perfect form. Variations of Cell are also depicted in the main timeline and Future Trunks's Timeline.
