"The Turtle Hermit's Kinto-Un" is the third episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 12 March 1986, receiving a ratings share of 24.1%. The episode was written by Keiji Terui and directed by Takenouchi Kazuhisa.

Synopsis

The party safely reaches the sea. In thanks, the turtle brings back an old man from the far side of the ocean who calls himself the Turtle Hermit! In gratitude for saving his turtle, the Turtle Hermit presents Goku with the Kinto-Un, which can fly as one wills it. Only the owner of a pure heart can ride on Kinto-Un, but the simple Goku manages to ride it! Meanwhile Bulma manages to obtain the Three-Star Ball that the Turtle Hermit had by promising to show him her panties!!

Summary

Prologue

Son Goku carries Turtle on his back while Bulma rides beside them on her motorcycle. The group have temporarily delayed their hunt for the Dragon Balls to return Turtle to the sea. He offers to walk, but Bulma insists that Goku carry him-- otherwise it would take a month for them to make it. They have only two more kilometers to go. Unknown to them, a sinister presence looks on from afar.

Part A

As the trio approach, a bear bandit (dressed as a samurai) blocks the road and demands that they turn over the "delicious" Turtle. He looks menacing with a scar over one eye. Bulma, terrified for her life, tells Goku to hand over Turtle to the thief. Goku refuses and sticks his tongue out at the imposing figure. The bear attacks as Bulma flees. Goku tells Turtle to get down as he dodges the first swipe from the bear's gigantic sword. Goku dodges blow after blow, finally landing on the bear's sword. With a single attack from his Jan-Ken, the bear is knocked unconscious. Goku says that it is time to go... but not before asking Turtle if he is as delicious as the bear said. Turtle assures Goku that he tastes terrible.

A short time later, the three arrive at the beach. Goku is amazed at how much water there is, although he still thinks of it as a large river. As Turtle paddles out to sea, he asks Goku to stay for a while so that he can be given a gift in return. As they wait, Goku discovers that ocean water is salty while Bulma complains that she did not bring a bathing suit.

Elsewhere, Pilaf rides through an adoring crowd on a white horse. His castle shines in the distance. As the crowd parts at his approach, Pilaf chuckles while holding the one-star ball; it was all a daydream of his life after he wishes for world domination. Shuu and Mai rush in and report that their information was false and that they did not find a Dragon Ball in the valley, only wolves. Pilaf is about to send them out to search further, but a phone rings: someone on the other end informs him that the Turtle Hermit has one of the Dragon Balls. The hermit is 250 km south-southeast of the city. This time, Pilaf will come along to make sure his agents finish the job.

Later that day, as Bulma scribbles in the sand and Goku builds a sandcastle, Turtle returns with a friend on his back: an old man known as the Turtle Hermit. Bulma is not impressed by the "geezer" and even Goku questions who the "old-timer" is. He introduces himself as the Turtle Hermit and asks Turtle which one of them helped him. Turtle says Goku. The hermit offers to give Goku a reward and summons the Immortal Phoenix... until Turtle reminds him that the phoenix died of bird poisoning the previous year. The hermit had intended to give Goku eternal life, but he thinks of another suitable reward.

Funimation's 1995 dub was contracted out to BLT Productions in Vancouver, who hired Canadian voice actors typically associated with Ocean Group. Funimation redubbed the series in the early 2000s with their in-house cast. In addition, Robotoriyama has a single speaking line, but is uncredited. He may have been voiced by Isamu Tanonaka, the voice of the character in Dr. Slump, but this is unconfirmed.

Setting

  • Bulma, Goku, and Turtle have trekked 120 km to the coastline since the previous episode. Because Bulma is still wearing hie nightshirt from the previous episode, it is implied to be later the same day. They fight the bear bandit 2 km from the beach and then walk the remaining distance.

Variations

• When Umigame promises to return with a reward for Goku, Bulma wonders if he will not bring a tamatebako. Clyde Mandelin replaces this with Pandora's Box in his subtitles for Funimation, and in the Funimation dub, Bulma says, "What kind of gift could a turtle have, huh?"

Tidbits

• Goku uses his first named attack of the series, the Jan-Ken (rock, paper, scissors attack) while defending himself from the bear bandit.
• Robotoriyama makes his first cameo appearance of the series on the beach where Goku and Bulma deliver Turtle. He remarks that he is not in Penguin Village, a reference to the Dr. Slump manga and anime where Robotoriyama made more frequent cameo appearances.
• This episode includes a reference to Urashima Tarō, a popular Japanese folk tale where a young man rescues a turtle and receives a reward. Urashima rides the turtle's back to a palace under the sea where he is entertained by a princess. When he leaves, she gives him a box (玉手箱 tamatebako, "jeweled hand box") and warns him never to open it. When Urashima returns home, many years have passed and everyone he knows is gone. He opens the tamatebako, and in a puff of smoke, he becomes an old man. (Akira Toriyama simply makes the old man into the turtle's reward.)
• Bulma channels her inner Arale by drawing a picture of poop in the sand while she waits for the Turtle's return.
• This episode includes the first appearance of the Turtle Hermit and Kintoun.
