Leine is a fictional character in the Japanese animated series Dragon Ball GT. Leine makes her debut in episode 7, which debuted on Fuji TV on 20 March 1996.

Biography

Leine is the daughter of the Village Headman of a small village at the foot of Mount Calvo. She is engaged to be married to Doma, but the amphibious monster Zunama threatens to destroy the village with earthquakes and the eruption of Mount Calvo if they do not provide him with a bride, so Leine's father arranges for Leine to marry Zunama instead. She is waiting anxiously for Zunama to arrive when Trunks, Goku, and Pan arrive on Planet Calvo in search of the Ultimate Dragon Ball that landed there after Pilaf made his wish on Planet Earth. It just so happens that the Dragon Ball has been woven into Leine's hair.

Leine's father tells the Earth gang the story of their situation, but just before he spells out Zunama's latest, most outrageous demand, the robot Giru interrupts him to tell everyone that danger is approaching. The Earth trio watches through a window as Zunama approaches the hut, asking if they have decided on a bride for him. Trunks realizes that this must have been his latest demand, and the Headman confirms; his daughter Leine has been chosen as the bride. Trunks angrily tells him that this is like human sacrifice, and a very uncivilized thing to do in this day and age.

Leine faints after her encounter with Zunama.

Zunama, however, is ecstatic, and threatens to wiggle his whiskers and cause an earthquake if they do not get on with it. He wiggles them, and the ground begins shaking. He threatens to next make the volcano erupt and destroy the whole village, but Leine rushes out, telling him to wait. Zunama asks if she is his bride, and what is her name? She tells him, and asks him to please stop the earthquake. Leine cries as Zunama inspects her; Doma calls out for her and tries to rush to her side, but his friends restrain him. Pan tells Trunks that they have to do something. Zunama is very happy with his bride, however, and says he will return for her on the morrow. He does not like her clothes, though, and tells her to wear a pretty bridal dress. He departs, and Leine faints.

Pan and Trunks watch over Leine, who is laid up in bed, and Pan promises they will take Zunama down. The villagers are shocked, but Pan tells them that in return, they only need to give them the Dragon Ball. The Headman is skeptical, but Pan assures him that they are very strong, and begs him to give them a chance; they do not want Leine to have to marry Zunama, after all. Leine is grateful for their offer, and Doma declares that he will go with them; he cannot allow Leine to bear the brunt of this misfortune. Pan and Trunks are happy to hear his offer, but Trunks advises Doma to let them handle it. Goku arrives and says he also wants to do his best for Leine, and the Headman grants them permission to try.

Leine and Doma regret their canceled wedding.

Pan tells Leine that they need something from her right away; a wedding dress! Pan is delighted at the pretty wedding dresses of this planet; Leine tells her that she was supposed to wear it for...she turns around to look at Doma. Pan assures her she will be able to wear it, and Doma thanks her. Eventually it is decided that Trunks will be the one to wear Leine's wedding dress and take her place with Zunama. Doma warns everyone that Zunama is coming. Indeed, he approaches singing Wagner's bridal chorus. When he arrives, Trunks does his best to impersonate Leine.[1]

Zunama is very suspicious, noticing that Leine-chan seems different than she was yesterday, but eventually Trunks manages to convince him, so Zunama grabs him up and takes off toward Mount Calvo, singing Wagner again. Doma and the others follow, and while at Mount Calvo, they discover that Zunama does not actually have the power to cause earthquakes; he can only predict them, and the increased seismic activity has aided his increased demands on the village. He begs them for forgiveness, and they escape the bowels of Mount Calvo just as it finally erupts. Then Goku destroys the volcano with a Kamehameha. Leine hands over her Dragon Ball to the Earth gang, and the villagers decide to allow Zunama to stay with them, since he seems to regret his actions.[2]

Name

Leine's name is likely derived from Madeleine (マドレーヌ madorēnu), a traditional sponge cake from Lorraine, France. Leine's name comes from the second part of the word, while her fiancé Doma's name is an anagram of the first two syllables. As Madeleines' popularity grew throughout France, multiple legends sprung up about the origin of their name, most centering around a woman (the cook, or a relative) in service to or patronized by a powerful man.

Production

Nakatsuru design.[3]

Leine was designed by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, the head character designer for Dragon Ball GT.[3]

Performance

Leine is voiced by Miki Itō, best known as the voice of No. 18. In the Funimation English dub, Leine is voiced by Gwendolyn Lau in her only credited role for the Dragon Ball franchise.
