"The Strong Villain of the Desert, Yamcha" is the fifth episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 26 March 1986, receiving a ratings share of 27.6%. The episode was written by series organizer Takao Koyama and directed by Daisuke Nishio.
Synopsis
Goku & co. head toward Mount Frypan. Because Bulma dropped her capsules in the river, they end up having to cross the desert on foot! Completely exhausted, Bulma goes to sleep where she stands. Just then, Yamcha, a desert bandit, appears, and attempts to take Oolong's capsules by threat of force. Goku fights Yamcha, but is unable to call on his strength on account of his empty stomach. But just as he is on the ropes, Bulma wakes up, and Yamcha, who is no good around women, flees with a few parting words.[1]
Summary
Prologue
Some time after leaving Aru Village, Bulma, Son Goku, and Oolong travel southwest on a river in search of the final Dragon Balls. Oolong was forced to come with them after his misdeeds terrorizing the village. Bulma remarks that there are only two balls left and she is finding them faster than she expected. Goku questions why they brought Oolong with them, but Bulma says that his transformation power may prove useful. Oolong wants to leave, but Bulma casually remarks that as it is so hot, she might sleep in her underwear tonight. Oolong sits back and enjoys the trip, until Goku pats him in the crotch. Goku announces that he is a boy and Oolong tells him to never touch him that way again.
Part A
Goku asks how much longer they have to go, and Bulma admits that it will take around three more days to get to Mount Frypan. Oolong is terrified of the place because the Ox Demon King lives there. Bulma is confident that Goku can take care of him, but Oolong is less sure. He explains that the Ox Demon King is known as the "emperor of demons". Everyone who goes near Mount Frypan dies. Oolong, terrified, transforms into a fish and leaps out of the boat. Goku leaps out of the boat after him and swims down, but Oolong camouflages himself in the weeds until Goku has to return for air. Bulma has a better idea to catch him: fishing, using her panties as bait. Within moments, the perverted Oolong is captured and back in the boat.
Goku threatens to eat Oolong if he flees again. Bulma offers to give Oolong the panties if he proves himself useful, as well as gives him a piece of candy. Goku asks for one as well, but Bulma says that she has none for him. Suddenly, the boat stops; they have run out of gas. Bulma asks Oolong if he can turn into gas, but he says of course not. She says that she has some gas in a Hoi-Poi Capsule, but they need to go to shore to fill the tank. She asks Oolong to become an oar and he agrees. Goku rows the boat ashore.
A short time later, Goku ties up the boat as Bulma searches through her pockets for her capsule case. Oolong asks her if he can have the panties now, but she says that he will have to do even more before he will get a girl's panties. Bulma realizes that she lost her capsules somewhere in the river. They will have to proceed the rest of the way on foot. Goku reminds her that they still have Kinto'un, although only he can ride it. Goku suggests that Oolong turn into a motorcycle, but the pig has fled. Goku searches on Kinto'un, but he is gone. Bulma has an idea and shouts "pee! pee! pee!" into the wilderness. Suddenly, Oolong's stomach rumbles and he flees into a push to do some emergency business. Bulma calls out that the candy that she gave him causes diarrhea and that she can trigger it at any time.
Goku looks disgusted at Bulma and gets into a battle stance with Nyoi-bō. He calls Bulma a witch. Bulma reassures him that the candy will only last for a month. Goku backs down. He goes from angry to mischievous as he tries out the "pee! pee! pee!" call himself. Oolong jumps into the bushes while Goku holds his nose and laughs.
Oolong transforms into a (very old) motorcycle and Bulma gets on, but she is too heavy for him. Despite Oolong's changed form, he still has his own level of strength. Oolong taunts Bulma and offers to transform into a pair of panties since she took off hers at the river. Bulma, offended, strikes Oolong to the ground. Goku remarks that they will be walking after all.
Part B
Some time later, the trio march through a desert with tooth-shaped rock formations. Goku is doing just fine, but Bulma and Oolong are exhausted and dehydrated. Oolong laments that they must cross the desert to reach Mount Frypan. Bulma complains that she is tired and there are no hotels or inns, and she no longer has her capsule house. She wants a bath! She wants a bed! Bulma settles down in the shade beneath a rocky overhang and immediately falls asleep. Oolong suggests that they rest also, but Goku is more hungry than tired.
From afar, Pu'er spies the resting group through his telescope perched on the roof of his and Yamcha's hideout. He reports down to Yamcha and the pair agree that "the boy and the pig" are easy prey, although they do not notice Bulma. The pair rocket across the desert on a bike with skis and quickly come face to face with Goku and Oolong. Yamcha demands that they turn over their money and capsules if the want to make it out of the desert alive. Suddenly, Oolong recognizes Pu'er "the crybaby", and Pu'er agrees that Oolong used to bully him at Southern Kindergarten. Yamcha, with no hint of irony, states that bullying the weak is terrible and vows revenge. Pu'er reveals that Oolong was expelled from school for stealing a teacher's panties.
Yamcha repeats his demand, but Oolong stands his ground... after confirming with Goku that he is pretty strong. Yamcha draws his sword and Oolong runs away, leaving the fight to Goku who is still confused about what is going on. Yamcha attacks, throwing his scabbard to distract Goku and charging in for the kill. Goku dodges easily and Yamcha charges again, nearly slicing Pu'er in two by mistake. Goku draws the Nyoi'bō and Yamcha parries his strike. Goku extends the pole, catching Yamcha off-guard, and rocketing him towards the rocks. Yamcha recovers and recognizes the staff, asking Goku how he came to own it. Goku replies that it was his late grandfather's, Son Gohan. Yamcha recognizes the name as one of the masters of every martial art. (Even Oolong had heard of Son Gohan and is shocked that Goku should have such a famous grandfather.) Goku just complains that he is hungry.
Yamcha, serious now, launches into a Rōga Fū-Fū Ken and strikes Goku with a flurry of kicks and punches. Goku is launched into a rocky outcropping which collapses onto him, leaving him buried in rubble. Oolong sees that the battle didn't go his way and suddenly sings Yamcha-sama's praises, but the bandit is having none of it. Oolong transforms into a fly to get away, but Pu'er merely becomes a fly swatter and bats him back down to the ground. Oolong relents and is about to hand over his "M-size" capsule, but Goku emerges from the rubble ready for another round. This time, he says, he will use his own special attack: the Jan-Ken. Yamcha attacks, but this time Goku has the upper hand by blocking his punch (Gū!), poking him in the eyes (Choki!), and batting him away with the palm of his hand (Pā!). Picking himself up off the ground, Yamcha becomes enraged and charges at Goku. Before he can strike however, Bulma wakes up and stops him in his tracks. The two stare at each other for a long moment before Yamcha calls for a strategic retreat. They blast off on their rocket-sled, vowing that Oolong's capsule will be theirs later.
Back at Yamcha's lair, he and Pu'er discuss his weakness around girls. He vows to get over his fear and claim that capsule!

Tidbits
- This episode marks the first appearances of Yamcha and Pu'er, as well as Yamcha's early signature attack, the Rōga Fū-Fū Ken. Pu'er is also the first character in the story to master flight; no fighting characters will have this ability until Dragon Ball Chapter 82.
- This episode depicts a flashback/story about the Ox King as told by Oolong. In that story, the Ox King appears in silhouette and is not depicted directly.
Background Text
-
Yamcha's lair features the Chinese idiom 千錘百煉 (qiān chuí bǎi liàn). Its literal meaning is to temper metal through repeated hammering, though it is actually used to refer to something that has been improved through many refinements, such a martial artist whose skills are honed through constant training (likely its intended meaning here), or to a piece of writing refined through a multitude of edits.
-
Yamcha's outfit features the kanji 楽 (Raku) meaning "ease", "comfort", or "music". In the Dragon Ball: Adventure Special guide book, Toriyama says that Yamcha wears this kanji because he likes things nice and easy.[3]

Notes
- ↑ Dragon Ball Episode 6 will establish that it has been 7 days since Goku left home, placing it on September 8. That episode begins the evening after they fight Yamcha in the desert and so this episode must also be on the 8th.
