Gel is a fictional character in the Japanese animated series Dragon Ball GT. Gel makes his debut in episode 4, which debuted on Fuji TV on 28 February 1996.

Biography

Gel and his partner Shila are the secondary bodyguards of Don Kia, the dictator-king of Planet Imegga. (His primary bodyguard is Redict.) After Trunks, Goku, and Pan make an emergency landing on Imegga, Gel and Shila are tasked with requisitioning their spaceship. The Earth trio returns from the city just in time to see the spaceship being towed away. As they chase after it, Gel and Shila report to Don Kia while he eats an Imegga Parfait. They tell him that they have recovered the spaceship discovered by the security team in a desert to the east. The ship appears on a screen, and Shila tells Don Kia that they have never seen a ship of this type before, so it must come from an unknown planet. Don Kia only wants to know whether it has any value, and when Shila tells him it does not, he wants to know whether there are any cute girls in the crew who could be marketed to talent producers, but Gel informs him there was no one aboard. Don Kia tells them to disassemble the ship so it can be sold as scrap.

Meanwhile, the Earth trio follows the tracks of the tow trailer and infiltrate the palace to steal it back. Gel and Shila arrive to ask what is going on as Pan is driving the tow trailer toward the exit. Gel and Shila attack with a combination ki attack, which Goku counters with a Kamehameha. He overwhelms their attack but then Redict interferes, knocking aside Goku's attack.

Don Kia reprimands Gel and Shila for the stolen spaceship and damaged dock; for as much as he pays them, they are worthless. Behind him, Redict objects to this, and Don Kia turns around to assure Redict that he was only talking about Gel and Shila. They apologize, but Don Kia calculates the damage to the dock and tells them it will come out of their pay. He asks about the interlopers, and Shila tells him they were caught on the surveillance cameras, so he takes a look at the screen, surmising they plan to repair the ship and escape. He resolves not to let that happen. Meanwhile, Trunks inspects the spaceship to see what parts they need. They return to the city to try to buy parts in the marketplace, but everyone closes up their shops as soon as they see the trio. Then Trunks notices that there are wanted posters with their likenesses on them. Sirens approach, and they decide to run away to avoid the police. Giru warns them that police are approaching, so they run to hide. Gel and Shila arrive to aid the search.

Name

Gel's name (ゲール gēru) is likely derived from the German word Geld (ゲルト geruto), meaning money. This name pun follows Planet Imegga's money theme.

Performance

Gel is voiced by Yasuhiko Kazawu, who voiced several minor roles in Dragon Ball Z including Caterpi and Olivu. In Dragon Ball Kai, he took over the role of Mister Popo, among others, and in Dragon Ball Super, he voiced several characters including Rumoosh.

In the Funimation dub, Gel is voiced by Grant James, who also voices Futopa in episode 3. His first credited role is Goku's doctor in Dragon Ball Z.
