Synopsis
Gohan visits Kuririn at Kame House to tell him about the Tenka'ichi Budōkai and Goku's 24-hour visit to participate. Gohan momentarily breaks the fourth wall to explain to the viewer that Kuririn stopped shaving his head when he gave up martial arts. Muten Rōshi says it has been a long time since they saw Goku. Kuririn thinks he might enter as well; Gohan thinks this is a great idea, but Kuririn is worried that he won't stand a chance with Goku and Vegeta participating; he also worries what No. 18 will say. Gohan says he should enter anyway; there are prizes for the top five fighers. No. 18 emerges from the house and asks how much money is at stake; Gohan tells her that, as he recalls it, the first prize is 10 million Zenni, second place is five million, third place is three million, fourth place is two million, and fifth place is one million. No. 18 tells Kururin that he must enter and that she will too; Marron is also excited about the money and encourages her father to enter, so he agrees. Muten Rōshi wonders if he should enter as well; Umigame shakes his head. Kuririn asks Gohan not to tell Piccolo about the tournament, hoping to improve his chances, but Gohan says he can't do that. Kuririn asks why Gohan is wearing such weird, lame clothes; Gohan tells Kuririn that he has lost his sense of style. He bids them farewell and flies off to God's Temple.
At the temple, Piccolo is excited to hear about the tournament and says he will enter; Mister Popo says he will root for him. Gohan asks Dende whether he will enter but Dende reminds Gohan that he is not a combat-type Namekian. Piccolo asks Gohan why he is wearing that weird outfit; Gohan can't believe Piccolo doesn't like it either and asks, "Don't you think this is cool?" Piccolo says he can't tell; Popo says he can't either.
As Gohan is flying home, he tries to think of who else to ask; he doesn't know where Tenshinhan is, and he thinks Bulma will contact Yamcha. That leaves Chi-Chi and Goten; Gohan can't wait to tell his mother that Goku is coming back for a day, and this will be Goten's first time meeting his father. He wonders if his mother will allow him to enter the tournament; if he wants to win, he'll have to skip school to train.
Chi-Chi is thrilled and chides Gohan for not telling her straightaway; she tells Goten he will get to meet his father and worries that she has gotten older. While she is in a celebratory mood, Gohan meekly takes the opportunity to ask if he can also enter the tournament; he points out that he could win ten million Zenni, or five million for second place. Chi-Chi insists that he enter; between him and Goku, they could win a total of fifteen million Zenni. Gohan reminds her that he might not win, but she won't hear it. Gohan says he will need to take time off school to train if he wants to win, and she tells him to do whatever he must; he can make up the schoolwork later. She thinks this opportunity is a blessing, as her father's money is running out and she was concerned about their finances. Gohan can't believe how easy it was to convince her. At bedtime, Gohan asks Goten if he will help him train, adn Goten agrees.
In the morning, just before sunrise, Gohan and Goten warm up together; Gohan decides to start his training by going Super Saiyan. (Z 205)
Later on, Gohan is concentrating on an attack while Goten plays with a dinosaur; just as Gohan is about to execute his attack, Goten interrupts him to show him a cute bug. Gohan does not know what to say. The scanerio repeats itself, but this time Goten has found a big lizard; Gohan chastises him and reminds him that they were not there to play. He suggests Goten do some pushups or something; he can't focus on his own training with Goten distracting him. The scenario repeats again; this time Gohan manages to execute his attack, but after a few moves, Goten interrupts him again; this time he has found a huge dinosaur. He is riding on its tail, and when the dinosaur swings its tail, Gohan is worried for Goten's safety and he intervenes, blasting a big rock formation before Goten can be crashed into it. Gohan asks if Goten is okay and warns him that such play is dangerous; he tells him to sit still and not do anything.
Goten does as Gohan asks, but after a while Gohan notices that his brother looks dejected, so he asks Goten to assist with his training. They gather some rocks and pile them up; Goten asks what they are for, and Gohan explains that he needs to get his reflexes back in shape. Goten asks what that means; Gohan draws a line in the sand with his toe, and instructs Goten to stand behind the line and throw the rocks at him. Gohan stands a little ways back, and Goten wonders why he wants to do it at such a short range. Gohan says they should probably make the range even closer, but they'll start with this range. Goten is still dubious, but Gohan insists he will be fine and tells Goten to throw as hard as he can. Goten complies, throwing a rock so hard it goes through the rock formation behind Gohan and out the other side. Goten is impressed that Gohan managed to dodge; Gohan is aghast at his little brother's strength. Goten gets ready to throw more, but Gohan frantically stops him, drawing a new line at twice the distance.
After a while, Gohan feels like he is getting the hang of it and tells Goten to get closer, but Goten wants to know if he can instead be like Gohan. Gohan doesn't know what he means, so Goten explains he wants to become a Super Saiyan. Gohan laughs and tells Goten that Super Saiyan might be a bit much for him; he'll need to go through harsh training first, and after that it will take anger to trigger it, but Goten cuts to the chase and transforms. Gohan is dumbstruck; he asks Goten how long he has been able to do that, but Goten can't remember. Gohan tells Goten that he and Goku had to work really hard to be able to transform, but Goten can't comprehend this. Gohan asks Goten if he wants to spar and Goten is ecstatic. Gohan asks if he knows what sparring is, and Goten says that Chi-Chi has trained him while Gohan was studying. Gohan thinks that their mother sure has changed since Goku died; he is reminded of how quickly she agreed to let him take time off school to train. Gohan asks Goten if Chi-Chi knows he can go Super Saiyan, and Goten says yes; he has a flashback of their training where Chi-Chi is mocking his weakness, telling him that Goku would laugh at him; this makes him angry and he transforms, kicking her to the ground. He apologizes for hurting her, but she is more distressed by his appearance; she cries that Goten is a delinquent now, too. Goten tells Gohan that she told him not to do it anymore, and Gohan laughs; he knows how much she hates the transformation.
Gohan and Goten start sparring, and Gohan is on the defensive; he takes to the air after some time and Goten complains that this isn't fair; Gohan can't believe that Goten is a Super Saiyan but still hasn't learned to fly. Goten insists that Gohan needs to teach him how to fly or it isn't fair; Gohan agrees, and just at that moment, Videl's helicopter arrives, and Gohan remembers that he promised her flying lessons, so Gohan tells Goten he will have company, explaining that Videl is a girl from his school; he warns Goten not to show her how strong he is, especially not Super Saiyan. Goten asks whether she would think him a delinquent, and Gohan tells him it's something like that. They hurry back to the house in base form; Goten tells Gohan that he is impressed that he didn't even manage to hit Gohan once, but Gohan was impressed with Goten, too; he suggests that if Goten were to train, he could enter the tournament too. Goten is excited, but he says that Trunks is even stronger than himself; when they "play-fight" together, Goten can't keep up. Gohan is surprised that they "play" like this, and thinks to himself that if he's not careful, he'll be surpassed by the kids soon.
At the house, Chi-Chi is having a heated discussion with Videl outside the front door; Chi-Chi believes Videl is there to ask Gohan on a date, but Videl protests that she is not. Gohan and Goten arrive, and Gohan tells Videl he is surprised that Videl found his house. She says she found his address on the class roll and demands he explain why he took a leave of absence from school without saying anything to her; she reminds him of his promise to teach her how to fly. Gohan tries to mollify her; he is still willing to teach her. Chi-Chi wants to know if it's true that Videl is also entering the tournament; Gohan explains that Videl is the one who told him about it in the first place. Videl is indignant; Chi-Chi warns her not to do anything inappropriate to Gohan as "thanks" for his teaching; Gohan is embarrased but Videl is livid and insists she would never do such a thing. Chi-Chi gets in her face and accuses her of entering the tournament to try to marry Gohan; Videl says she most certainly is not, and why would she get married at a tournament anyway? Goten tells her that his parents got married at the Tenka'ichi Budōkai; Videl is speechless and Chi-Chi is momentarily embarrassed at being called out, but then she reminisces fondly on that time. Meanwhile Videl thinks Chi-Chi is crazy. Despite her fond memories, Chi-Chi tells Videl that it's a different story with her and Gohan; Videl insists again that it's not going to happen; the very notion is ridiculous. Gohan smiles fondly as they trade barbs; there is only a month until the tournament, and Gohan doesn't think he'll be able to train in peace for a while, but then he remembers Goten's strength, and thinks that he can't afford to slack off.
