Kunsi is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Kunsi makes his debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 96, broadcast on 25 June 2017 on Fuji TV, as a member of the Pride Troopers.

Biography

Kunsi generates tough threads of ki from both hands which paralyze his opponent. In the Tournament of Power, he is blown out of the ring by Hit's Time Skip.[1][2]

Tournament of Power

Kunsi is one of the ten Pride Troopers chosen to represent Universe 11 in the Tournament of Power. When Dyspo falls prey to Hit's Time Skip technique and is knocked out of the ring, Kunsi uses his trademark ki threads to rescue his teammate. Champa protests that this is cheating, but Vados corrects him, pointing out that this is not a weapon but something that emanates from Kunsi's body, so it is allowed. Kunsi tells Dyspo that he will join his battle, as Universe 11 cannot afford to lose him, and Dyspo gladly accepts his assistance. Kunsi holds Hit in place while Dyspo attacks him; Caulifla witnesses this from the sidelines and resolves to assist her teammate, but before she can act, Goku drops into the middle of the fight in his Super Saiyan God form and kicks Dyspo into Kunsi.

Hit tries to refuse Goku's help, but Goku insists he is not helping; the sight of Hit being ganged up on by Kunsi and Dyspo just makes him itch to fight. Hit insists that Dyspo is his prey, but Goku tells Hit to try to stop him, and attacks Dyspo. Hit attacks as well and is captured by Kunsi's ki ropes again. Hit blasts them away, but then he notices that Kunsi has left ropes of ki lying around, and he correctly surmises that they will explode if he touches them. Kunsi believes this is an impregnable defense. However, Hit attacks him from a distance with a shockwave that only affects living beings. Hit and Goku trade places; Hit attacks Dyspo while Goku plows through Kunsi's minefield and knocks him flying into a rock. Hit has Dyspo beaten and throws him toward the edge of the ring again, but Kunsi saves him one more time, advising him to wait for a chance to strike. Kunsi attacks Hit, but Hit uses Time Skip and knocks Kunsi out of the ring.[2]

When Jiren is defeated at the end of the tournament, Kunsi and the other Pride Troopers look on as Jiren apologizes to them for treating them with contempt during the fight. Universe 11 is erased, but they are revived back at home in their own universe shortly thereafter by No. 17's wish. Kunsi and the others watch a shooting star cross the sky while Jiren and Toppo reflect on the lessons of the tournament.[3]

Name

Kunsi's name is likely an anagram of the Japanese transliteration of "sink" (シンク/shinku). This name pun follows the theme of the Pride Troopers being named after items found in a kitchen.[4]

Production

Kunsi's character design for the Tournament of Power[1]

An interview with Dragon Ball Super producer Sakoru Takami and director Ryōta Nakamura published near the end of the anime's broadcast run gives some detail about the development of the Pride Troopers:[5]

Were Universe 11‘s Pride Troopers part of Toriyama-sensei‘s designs?
Nakamura: They weren’t in his designs, but since Jiren and co. all wore the same red and black suits, he allowed us to flesh it out like that. [...] Toriyama-sensei‘s background for Toppo included that he was a candidate for God of Destruction, so we fleshed that out a bit. We wondered what to do with Dyspo, but then once Bin Shimada was cast, he naturally took shape as a cocky character. With the concept for those three settled, we came up with the other members to match up with them.

Kunsi's character design for the Tournament of Power was provided on Toei Animation's official website on 05 October 2017.[1]

Performance

Kunsi is voiced by Masakazu Morita, best known as the voice of Whis. In the Tournament of Power, Morita also gives his voice to Il, the Kaiōshin of Universe 8, and Rabanra of Universe 2. In the Funimation dub, Kunsi is voiced by...
