The Savior of Namek is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball franchise, a Namekian debuting in chapter 46 of the Dragon Ball Super manga in its original "Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc".

Biography

During the three days it takes Son Goku and Vegeta to recover from their first fight with the planet-eater Moro, the strongest warriors of New Namek begin the process of assimilation to create one super-warrior, the Savior of Namek. No other name is given for the base Namekian who assimilated all of the other warriors. Grand Elder Muri tells Goku and Vegeta that this is how their race has survived throughout the ages when confronted with evil beings who threaten them. As the savior flies towards Moro, the other warriors intercept him to be assimilated. When he arrives at Elder Tsuburi's village, he moves to attack Moro from behind, but Moro impales the Savior of Namek on his arm without even turning around, killing him.[1]

Name

This assimilated super-Namekian was referred to as the "Savior of Namek" (ナメック星の救世主 Namekku-sei no Kyūseishu) by Elder Tsuburi. Namekku-sei (ナメック星) is akin to saying "Namek" instead of the more formal "Planet Namek" (惑星ナメック Wakusei Namekku). The no (の) is a possessive particle. Kyūseishu (救世主) is a term used to refer to important savior figures in Zoroastrianism and the Messiah figures of Judaism and Christianity.

Moro picks up the term from Tsuburi, and refers to the assimilated Namekian simply as Kyūseishu, but when Elder Muri tells Goku and Vegeta about him, he uses the term Hoshi no Kyūseishu (星の救世主), or "Savior of the Planet". When 星 is used as a standalone noun, it is pronounced hoshi (ほし); when 星 is used as a planetary suffix, it is pronounced sei (せい).

Production

In the anime version of Dragon Ball Super, the Universe 6 Namekians Saonel and Pilina have each assimilated several of their brethren in preparation for the Tournament of Power.[2] While Saonel and Pilina are also characters in the manga version of the tournament, this detail about assimilation is never mentioned there, and the Universe 6 Namekians are eliminated by their teammate Kale before they can do anything special.[3]

The Savior of Namek is the only other example of mass assimilation in the main Dragon Ball story. Previously, the only Namekian character known to have assimilated another Namekian was Piccolo, who assimilated Nail and then later assimilated God, his other half. The idea for mass assimilation might have been drawn from the anime plot for Saonel and Pilina.

Performance

Thus far, the Savior of Namek appears exclusively in the Dragon Ball Super manga; as such, no voice has been assigned.

Notable Appearances

Thus far, the Savior of Namek appears exclusively in the Dragon Ball Super manga.

Notes

  • It can probably be assumed that all of the Namekian warriors who participated in the assimilation were affected by Moro's energy drain, so the Savior of Namek was probably not nearly as strong as he could have been under normal circumstances.
