On 28 April 2015, Toei Animation officially announced that production was underway on the first all-new TV series for the Dragon Ball franchise in 18 years. The series was later announced for a 05 July 2015 debut on Fuji TV, taking over the Dragon Ball Kai time slot. The series' story and characters were developed by original manga author Akira Toriyama. Veteran director Kimitoshi Chioka, known for his exquisite storyboard layouts, was brought on-board to direct and Tadayoshi Yamamuro returned as character designer. The majority of the main cast from Dragon Ball Kai and the recent films returned, including Yūko Minaguchi (Videl), Kōichi Yamadera (Beerus), Masakazu Morita (Whis), and Jōji Yanami as the series' narrator.

In mid-May, Toei launched an official website for the series; the bare-bones presentation featured a short plot synopsis, a Yamamuro drawing of Goku, a link to the series' official Twitter account, and and a reiteration of some of the information that was given with the series announcement. Akira Toriyama was credited for the story, and Masako Nozawa was credited as Goku, Gohan, and Goten, accompanied by a pop-up of her personal message from the series announcement:
{{Quotation|I've used the word 「超」 ("Super") in so many commercials, games and other media, it is fantastic that the long awaited Dragon Ball Super will finally begin. The website launch revealed that Kazuya Yoshii would perform the opening song, and Good Morning America would perform the ending song. At the bottom of the webpage was an announcement that had already begun to leak in advance of the publication of the July issue of V-Jump, in stores on 21 May 2015: a Dragon Ball Super manga by Toyotarō, with Toriyama credited for the story, would begin in the August issue of V-Jump, on sale 20 June 2015. On 19 October 2016, Toei Animation announced a Dragon Ball Super subtitled simulcast to be hosted on Crunchyroll, Daisuki, and AnimeLab (Australia/New Zealand) beginning with episode 63, which was broadcast just a few days later on 23 October 2016. Episodes 11-20 were made available on on 06 November 2016 concurrent with the simulcast of episode 65; episodes 21-30 on 13 November 2016 with episode 66; episodes 31-40 on 20 November 2016 with episode 67 (the last episode of the Future Trunks arc); and episodes 41-46 on 27 November 2016 with episode 68. On 30 March 2017, in advance of episode 81, Crunchyroll affiliate VRV announced they would also host the simulcast, though it was only available in the United States which was already covered by Daisuki, Crunchyroll, and Funimation.

Crunchyroll initially announced coverage for a limited area; the simulcast was available to paid and free users in United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and to paid users in South Africa and Latin America (with Spanish subtitles). On 30 May 2017, Crunchyroll announced an expansion of their coverage to include the United Kingdom and much of the rest of Europe, with various foreign-language subtitles.
On 28 April 2015, Toei Animation officially announced that production was underway on the first all-new TV series for the Dragon Ball franchise in 18 years. The series was later announced for a 05 July 2015 debut on Fuji TV, taking over the Dragon Ball Kai time slot. The series’ story and characters were developed by original manga author Akira Toriyama. Veteran director Kimitoshi Chioka, known for his exquisite storyboard layouts, was brought on-board to direct and Tadayoshi Yamamuro returned as character designer. While the series was ongoing, the Daisuki streaming service, in partnership with Bandai Namco, covered large parts of the world not covered by Crunchyroll. Episodes typically appeared first on Daisuki, minutes later on Crunchyroll, and hours later on Funimation. AnimeLab typically released between Daisuki and Crunchyroll, but this service was only available in Australia and New Zealand. Funimation's simulcast episodes went up late enough to be suggestive of a contractual obligation, perhaps through Funimation's contemporaneous partnership with Crunchyroll. The partnership ended on 09 November 2018, well after the series ended.

When Daisuki closed after being acquired by Bandai, they kept Dragon Ball Super as their only available title for some time while the service passed to Bandai's Dragon Ball Super Card Game website. The episodes were removed from Bandai's website as they became widely available in physical format, but they remained on Funimation, Crunchyroll, VRV, and AnimeLab's streaming services.

Dragon Ball Super (often abbreviated as Super) is a Japanese animated television series produced by Toei Animation. The series' initial story concept and character designs were developed by original author Akira Toriyama. The series was announced to, "...follow the aftermath of Goku's fierce battle with Majin Boo, as he attempts to maintain earth's fragile peace."[1] The series is set slightly after the showdown with Majin Boo and retells the franchise's most recent movies, Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F'[2], before proceeding into new story lines created by Akira Toriyama.

Plot

Peace has once again returned to the Earth, where its heroes are enjoying a quiet life. However Beerus, the God of Destruction, has awoken after a 39 year slumber. Having had a dream about "Super Saiyan God", he sets out in search of this mysterious Saiyan. After visiting Kaiō, and eventually ending up on Earth, Son Goku must find a way to summon the power of "Super Saiyan God" and battle the irritable god before he destroys the Earth!

History

Japan

The launch of the official website.

In mid-May, Toei launched an official website for the series; the bare-bones presentation featured a short plot synopsis, a Yamamuro drawing of Goku, a link to the series' official Twitter account, and and a reiteration of some of the information that was given with the series announcement.[3] Akira Toriyama was credited for the story, and Masako Nozawa was credited as Goku, Gohan, and Goten, accompanied by a pop-up of her personal message from the series announcement:[4]

I've used the word 「超」 ("Super") in so many commercials, games and other media, it is fantastic that the long awaited Dragon Ball Super will finally begin. I hope that this series will last a long time and have the same impact around the world as its predecessor. (In character voices:)
Goku: Heya! I'm really happy to be able to meet you all again.
Gohan: It really is great, isn't it, father? To be able to see everyone.
Goten: Yay, I'm going to do a lot of Fusion with Trunks again!
Goku: Be sure you don't miss it, guys!

— Masako Nozawa

The website launch revealed that Kazuya Yoshii would perform the opening song, and Good Morning America would perform the ending song.[5] At the bottom of the webpage was an announcement that had already begun to leak in advance of the publication of the July issue of V-Jump, in stores on 21 May 2015:[6] a Dragon Ball Super manga by Toyotarō, with Toriyama credited for the story, would begin in the August issue of V-Jump, on sale 20 June 2015. The announcement in the July issue included a note from V-Jump editor Victory Uchida:[7]

A Completely New "Dragon Ball", Full of Mystery!!
The latest TV animation was suddenly announced!! That was a Victory-surprise, even for me!! What on Earth will the story be? It's such a mystery… There's no doubt it will exceed everyone's expectations!!!
— Victory Uchida

In the August issue that featured the first manga chapter, the "Dragon Ball Park" feature revealed a few more details about the anime plot, some of which turned out to be incorrect. (Scoop #2 is omitted; it was an announcement for the OP and ED artists.)[8]

Comment From Toyotarō-sensei

Simulcast

Streaming platforms used the key visual for the God of Destruction Champa arc to promote the simulcast.

On 19 October 2016, Toei Animation announced a Dragon Ball Super subtitled simulcast to be hosted on Crunchyroll, Daisuki, and AnimeLab (Australia/New Zealand) beginning with episode 63, which was broadcast just a few days later on 23 October 2016.[9][10][11] The entire Future Trunks arc was made available on the same day as episode 63, beginning with episode 47. The first 46 episodes were made available in ten-episode batches, starting with episodes 1-10, which were made available on 30 October 2016, concurrent with the simulcast of episode 64.

That week, on 04 November 2016, Funimation announced their own acquisition of the series along with their plans to host the simulcast and produce an English dub. Episodes 1-10 and 47-64 were made available with the Toei simulcast subtitles on their North American streaming service immediately, and they joined the other simulcast platforms in making the others available in weekly batches.[12] Episodes 11-20 were made available on on 06 November 2016 concurrent with the simulcast of episode 65; episodes 21-30 on 13 November 2016 with episode 66; episodes 31-40 on 20 November 2016 with episode 67 (the last episode of the Future Trunks arc); and episodes 41-46 on 27 November 2016 with episode 68. On 30 March 2017, in advance of episode 81, Crunchyroll affiliate VRV announced they would also host the simulcast, though it was only available in the United States which was already covered by Daisuki, Crunchyroll, and Funimation.[13]

Crunchyroll initially announced coverage for a limited area; the simulcast was available to paid and free users in United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and to paid users in South Africa and Latin America (with Spanish subtitles). On 30 May 2017, Crunchyroll announced an expansion of their coverage to include the United Kingdom and much of the rest of Europe, with various foreign-language subtitles.[14]

While the series was ongoing, the Daisuki streaming service, in partnership with Bandai Namco, covered large parts of the world not covered by Crunchyroll.[15] Episodes typically appeared first on Daisuki, minutes later on Crunchyroll, and hours later on Funimation.[16][note 1] AnimeLab typically released between Daisuki and Crunchyroll, but this service was only available in Australia and New Zealand. Funimation's simulcast episodes went up late enough to be suggestive of a contractual obligation, perhaps through Funimation's contemporaneous partnership with Crunchyroll.[17][note 2] The partnership ended on 09 November 2018, well after the series ended.[18]

When Daisuki closed after being acquired by Bandai, they kept Dragon Ball Super as their only available title for some time while the service passed to Bandai's Dragon Ball Super Card Game website.[19][20] The episodes were removed from Bandai's website as they became widely available in physical format, but they remained on Funimation, Crunchyroll, VRV, and AnimeLab's streaming services.

Notes

 1. More evidence for this is scattered across dozens of Kanzenshuu and Reddit episode discussion threads, among many other places on the internet. Crunchyroll remained the best-known and most widely-referenced platform, even though Daisuki was available in most countries covered by Crunchyroll. Daisuki's 1080p video was available to free users, while Crunchyroll only offered 720p to free users, and Daisuki's ads were relatively limited and focused on Bandai Namco's content.
 2. Funimation was the only streaming service to host the full special broadcast version of episodes 109 and 110. It remains on their streaming service with the Toei Animation simulcast subtitles. Switching the audio to the English dub automatically switches the video source to the split-episode version of the special, which was broadcast on Toonami over two weeks. The full broadcast version of the special was not included on Funimation's Blu-ray release, even though it was included on Toei's Blu-rays, so the full special has never been released for the English dub.
