Summary

Part A

After the preliminary matches, Goku and Kuririn run to find their friends, celebrating their advancement to the Tenka'ichi Budōkai finals. They push their way through the crowd, but there are so many people, they cannot find Muten Rōshi. They look around, and then Goku asks an old man for help. He stands on top of the man's head, looking around until he finds everyone, telling Kuririn they are all together. Bulma is asking the old man where he has been; he claims he found his way to the toilet, but got lost on the way back. Oolong informs him that while he was gone, Goku was selected as a finalist for the tournament; Bulma adds that Yamcha and Kuririn made it too. He tells them that he heard as much from the arena announcer, and that is one less thing to worry about. But nevermind that; he bought something for Bulma at the souvenir stand, an orange t-shirt that says "Martial Arts Temple" (武道寺 Budō-ji). He wants to know how it looks on her. He also got a keychain. She thanks him, but then he suggest that in return, maybe... Bulma's face falls as she realizes there is a catch. The old man creeps closer, reaching out with his fingers to poke her boobs, telling her he hopes she will allow him, an old man with so little time left on this Earth to have a little puff-puff. Bulma tosses the trinkets and socks the old man with an uppercut. He goes flying, and then falls to the ground, the t-shirt landing on his face, while Bulma soothes her sore hand, and Oolong tells her she should have entered the tournament as well.

Just then, Goku calls out to Oolong, who runs to congratulate him. Bulma tells him that everyone was incredible, and Oolong agrees; Muten Rōshi tells Goku and Kuririn that they did well, and Kuririn thanks him for his training. Over the loudspeaker, a man announces that the Tenka'ichi Budōkai will begin shortly and instructs the eight finalists to proceed to the temple's main hall. Bulma tells the boys to run along, so they say their goodbyes, jumping a nearby wall while their friends wish them luck. Bulma observes that Goku is as small as ever, while the old man remarks to himself that it is time. Oolong turns around to look for him, but he is gone. Oolong asks where he went, and Bulma guesses he ran off again. They all look, but he is nowhere to be found.

In the main hall, Goku catches up with Yamcha; Goku tells him he saw everyone and it was like old times. Kuririn checks out one of the other finalists, a man with a turban who seems to be meditating, his hands pressed together in front of his chest, eyes closed. Elsewhere, a woman leans against a wall with her arms crossed and eyes closed; an old man approaches her and tries to make conversation, but she looks the other way. He continues to goggle at her figure, though. Meanwhile, Goku sniffs the air. A big, nasty man approaches them, the same one who scared Bulma at the window earlier.[1] Flies swarm around him and mucus drips from his nose and mouth. As he gets closer, Goku is overwhelmed by the terrible smell, but the man pushes through as they all make way for him. Yamcha tells them that this guy has superhuman strength, but his stench is even worse; it is said that he has never taken a bath from the time that he was born. He forces his opponents to hold their noses instinctively, preventing them from using their hands. Goku complains that his sense of smell is as good as a dog's, so it hits him really hard.

The tournament announcer calls the finalists to him, but when they gather, he asks the stinky man to back up a bit. He points at the bracket for the finals and tells them that there will be a drawing to determine their opponents and fighting order. Another monk stands by his side with a box; the announcer instructs them to draw one slip when their name is called. The old man approaches, grabbing Lan-Fan by the arm and telling the announcer that he wants to fight this girl. The announcer angrily tells him not to ask for special treatment, and the old man complains that he has no sense of romance. The announcer calls Namu, who draws #5 in the third match. The announcer writes his name on the bracket, then calls Giran, who draws #8 in the fourth match. Then he calls Bacterian, the stinky man, who draws #1 in the first match. Then Yamcha draws #4 in the second match. Kuririn is called, and as he roots around in the box, the monk wonders if he can reach the papers, but then Kuririn draws #2. His face falls as he realizes he will face Bacterian in the first match.

The announcer struggles to read the next name; his attempt is "Mago Gosora-san", but no one answers to this name. He repeats it, and Goku looks around in confusion. The announcer tries again in a louder voice, but still no one answers. He squints at his clipboard and then starts counting the finalists who are present, scratching his head. Yamcha approaches, looking at the clipboard. He asks if that name might be "Son Gokū", and the announcer turns red with embarrassment and apologizes for his rudeness. He calls for Son Goku, and Goku draws #7 in the fourth match. Lan-Fan is called, and she draws #6; then the old man, Jackie Chun is called, drawing #3.

The announcer tells the finalists that the finalists will be decided by one point: if they fall off the battle ring or give up, they lose. Eye-poking and attacks to vital areas are forbidden. Goku asks what counts as a "vital area"; with an apology for the rude language, the announcer explains it means balls. Lan-Fan points out that she does not have any. The announcer falls over, then tells the finalists with a blush that the matches will begin shortly, and asks them to remain here until they are called. Composing himself, he turns to leave, but Goku stops him, asking him about lunch. The announcer wonders if he really wants to eat right before the matches, but Goku insists, so the announcer asks the attendant monk to have something prepared for him. The monk tells Goku to follow him. Goku asks Kuririn if he wants to come, but Kuririn says he is so nervous, he would not be able to keep anything down. Goku stuffs his face in a room near the kitchen; after clearing a few dozen plates, he asks for more while the cook gapes.

In the tournament arena, the announcer takes the microphone and apologizes to the spectators for the delay. The 21st Tenka'ichi Budōkai will now begin! Everyone cheers, and he announces the contestants for the first round: in the first match, Bacterian vs. Kuririn! In the second match, Jackie Chun vs. Yamcha! In the third match, Lan-fan vs. Namu! In the fourth match, Mago—er, Son Goku vs. Giran!

Part B

The tournament announcer tells the spectators that the first match between Kuririn and Bacterian will begin soon. The winner of the tournament will receive a cash prize of 500,000 zenni. Before the first match, the head priest of the Budō Temple has a few words. The head priest takes the microphone, looks around, and says "Woof!" The announcer thanks him, and the spectators fall over. But now, the first match begins! The announcer asks the contestants to enter the ring. Goku wishes Kuririn good luck, and Kuririn nervously makes his way outside, where he faces Bacterian. The announcer holds a handkerchief over his nose as he introduces Kuririn, the youngest contestant at 13 years old, and then Bacterian, the man who has never taken a bath. The spectators all hold their noses;
