"What Happened, Piccolo? An Unexpected Outcome in the First Round" is the one hundred and tenth episode of Dragon Ball Z Kai (the international version of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Kai) and the twelfth episode of "The Final Chapters", the international branding for the series' Majin Boo arc. The episode debuted in the United States on Cartoon Network's Toonami on 25 March 2017.

Synopsis

Trunks is excited that his and Goten's fathers will be fighting each other; he wonders which will win, but Goten is sure it will be his father. Trunks thinks it is obvious that his father will win; Goku is dead after all. Goten says that, dead or not, Goku has been training in the afterlife according to Gohan. The announcer calls for "Mighty Mask" to draw, and Trunks apologizes for not paying attention; he draws number thirteen. A monk asks whether Mighty Mask has always had such a long torso. Trunks pours some sports drink for himself at the cooler; Goten wants some too. Trunks says that would give them away, and that he can have some after their match, but Goten throws a tantrum, saying he is hot inside the costume, until Trunks agrees to share; he passes it down to Goten, who sneaks it under the costume and then drops it out between his legs.

"Ma Junior" is called to draw; Piccolo draws number four, which puts him against Shin; Piccolo thinks that will give him an opportunity to learn more. Next, the announcer draws on behalf of Mister Satan, drawing number ten, which makes Satan's opponent No. 18. Kuririn celebrates their good fortune, and No. 18 wonders who Satan is, but Videl tells her she is unlucky to have to face her father right off. Yamu draws last, predictably drawing number fifteen. The announcer lists off the final brackets: Kuririn vs. Punter in the first match, Shin vs. "Ma Junior" in the second match, Videl vs. Spopovitch in the third match, Kibito vs. "Great Saiyaman" in the fourth match, No. 18 vs. Mister Satan in the fifth match, Goku vs. Vegeta in the sixth match, "Mighty Mask" vs. Killa in the seventh match, and Yamu vs. Jewel in the eighth match. The announcer says that the matches will begin right away, and that they should follow him to the contestants' lobby. He asks whether they all know the rules: they will lose if they give up, are down for a count of ten, fall out of the ring, or kill their opponent; each match will have a limit of thirty minutes; if a match has not been decided in that time, it will be decided by the judges. Kuririn wonders about the time limit (which they never had in previous tournaments); Punter assures him that their match will only take ten seconds, and Kuririn is beginning to get annoyed by his opponent.

Mister Satan is taking a nap in his dressing room; a monk comes to inform him that he will be in the fifth match, and Satan asks who his opponent will be. The monk tells him that it is an attractive woman, which makes him sit up with a smile. Piccolo is getting nervous; Videl observes that he has been unusually nervous for some time. Gohan tells her that this is just his way of boosting his ki, but Gohan thinks to himself that Piccolo is nervous because of his mysterious opponent, Shin. Goku does stretches; Kuririn says he seems to be fired up, and Goku says he can hardly wait. Kuririn says with him fighting Vegeta in the first round, it will be like the champtionship match. Goku agrees; he says he is excited. Then he notices that Piccolo is nervous; Kuririn thinks he is excited, too, and tells Piccolo to go easy on him when they meet in the second round. Just then, Shin enters the lobby and stops in front of Piccolo, smiling at him. Kuririn moves on to his wife, telling her that her opponent is supposed to be the world champion; he advises her to go easy on him to allow him to save face, and she tells him to be quiet; she knows what to do. Goku is ignoring this conversation, however, still focusing on the tension between Shin and Piccolo.

In the arena, fireworks and music signal the beginning of the tournament. The announcer thanks everyone for waiting; Bulma, Chi-Chi, and Erasa shout good luck to their favorites. Punter shows off his strength against a punching bag and Kuririn stretches while Goku, Gohan, and Videl look curiously out at the crowd from behind the privacy screen. Vegeta is checking out Spopovitch and Yamu. Kuririn says it has been too long; it is time for him to cut loose. The announcer tells the crowd that it is time to begin the Tenka'ichi Budōkai and they cheer. (Z 214)

Erasa tells Shapner that Videl is in the third match; she is starting to get excited. Shapner says there is nothing to worry about; only Mister Satan himself could beat Videl. Erasa says she guesses he is right, but then she spots Great Saiyaman among the contestants. She says they will have a battle between the champions of justice in the escond round; it should be good. Shapner is skeptical that Great Saiyaman will win his first round.

The director of the Satan City police band directs them to cheer loudly for Videl. Bulma pops a drink for Yamcha, and he asks her why she is in such a good mood; she says it is because Trunks won the junior division; even though he was a shoo-in, this makes her happy. Chi-Chi takes an angry bite out of her hotdog, but Bulma continues, oblivious; she is sure Vegeta will win the adult division too, and that father and son will take home both titles. Chi-Chi finally speaks up, saying this will not happen because he could never beat Goku; he will lose in the first round. Bulma says she cannot know that; Trunks beat Goten, after all. Chi-Chi insists again that no one can beat Goku; Bulma says Vegeta has been training for five years using a new gravity room that she made for him; Vegeta is sure to win. Chi-Chi retorts that their livelihood depends on Goku winning; she says that is different from someone who is only fighting for the fun of it. Bulma says again that Vegeta will win; they go back and forth until Yamcha tells them to stop being childish; they tell him to shut up and slam him to the ground on top of Oolong.

The announcer tells the crowd that their wait is over and announces the beginning of the first match, Kuririn vs. Punter. Goku wishes Kuririn good luck; as Kuririn walks out, Punter "accidentally" bashes Kuririn into a wall; Kuririn asks him what his deal is, but Punter pretends not to have seen him there; he says he thought Kuririn must have run away. He tells Kuririn he is unlucky to face him in the first round, but if he is lucky, he will get off with only a trip to the hospital. The announcer tells the audience about Kuririn's past showings in this tournament when he was younger; this is his first return to the tournament after a long absence. Punter made it to the semi-finals at the last tournament, where he lost by ringout, and he is known for his ferocity. They enter the ring, and Punter yells to assert his dominance; Marron is worried because her father's opponent is big and strong, but Yamcha tells her not to worry; her father is the strongest Earthling man in the world, and his opponent is no big deal. The audience thinks it looks like an unfair match-up, with such a huge size difference; they feel sorry for Kuririn. From the contestant area, Killa comments that Punter never shows any mercy when he gets in the fighting mood; he has a flashback of Punter's brutal beat-down of a previous opponent. Meanwhile, Piccolo is still nervous about his own match; Shin smiles knowingly in his direction.

In the ring, the announcer says that, despite the size difference, Punter does not appear to be planning on holding back against Kuririn. Punter tells Kuririn that this tournament is serious business and no place for an old runt like him. Kuririn is bored; he does not want to waste energy on fighting this fool.

The announcer tells them to begin the match. Punter makes to attack Kuririn, but instead does several flips around the ring to try to intimidate Kuririn; he says while struggling for breath that, even though he is big, he is still quick and nimble; it will not do Kuririn any good to run away. Kuririn is not impressed; he promises that he will not run away. Punter says it is too soon for him to lose heart; he offers to allow Kuririn to punch him to show how tough he is and tells Kuririn not to be shy. Kuririn takes him up on his offer, punching him once in the gut. He then slaps him back and forth a few times and then kicks him out of the ring where he falls dazed. The announcer calls a ringout and the match for Kuririn. The crowd is amazed that Kuririn is so powerful despite being small; Bulma and Chi-Chi celebrate, and Marron is happy her father won; Yamcha says he told her so. The announcer elatedly thinks to himself that this is what the Tenka'ichi Budōkai is supposed to be.

Goku congratulates Kuririn on his match when he returns to the contestant area; Kuririn says it was a piece of cake, and tells Piccolo it is his turn, wishing him good luck. Piccolo is still nervous and Kuririn wonders why; he does not think that Shin is the sort of opponent who should worry him, but Goku seems to understand. Vegeta looks back and forth between Piccolo, Goku, and Shin, assessing the situation.

The announcer says it is time for the second match between "Ma Junior" and Shin; they proceed to the ring; Shin tells Piccolo that this tournament seems like fun, but Piccolo is sweating. The announcer tells the crowd that this is Shin's first tournament appearance, but "Ma Junior" fought incredibly in the final round of a long-ago tournament which the announcer remembers well. As Piccolo enters the ring, the announcer asks him to please not destroy it this time. Some of the spectators recognize Piccolo as someone who was present at the Cell Games; they saw him on TV. Kuririn asks Goku and the others whether Shin is really that formidable; Goku says he is, and Kuririn says he doesn't look all that tough. In the ring, Shin stares at Piccolo and smiles; Vegeta thinks to himself that he will finally get to see what kind of battle power Shin has, since they have no clue. The announcer tells them to begin, but Piccolo is increasingly frightened; he cannot summon his power. Shin seems unsurprised by this, but Piccolo does not understand what is wrong. The spectators begin to complain that they are not fighting; the announcer begs them to begin. Piccolo comes to some realization about Shin's power; Goku, Gohan, and Vegeta seem to realize that something has happened. Piccolo silently wonders who Shin is, exactly; Shin tells him that he will learn soon, shocking Piccolo, but that they should enjoy this match for now. The announcer asks what is wrong; Piccolo tells him that he must forfeit the match, much to the announcer's disappointment. Shin thinks to himself that Piccolo used to be the god of this world and might be getting an idea who he is. The announcer tells the crowd that Ma Junior has forfeited, and Shin is the winner; the spectators are disappointed, but they think that Piccolo did look pale, so they are not too surprised.

As Piccolo returns to the contestant area, Goku and the others ask him whether it was really that bad; Piccolo says yes, Shin's power is in a completely different dimension, which shocks Goku and Vegeta. Kuririn tells him to stop kidding around—Kuririn has to fight him next—but Piccolo is still shaking.

The announcer says it is time for the third match between Videl and Spopovitch; the band plays, and the crowd chants her name. Gohan is happy that she is so popular, and wishes her good luck. Killa informs Spopovitch that it is his turn, but Spopovitch ignores him; Killa tries to shake him to get his attention, but he is electrocuted when he touches Spopovitch. Yamu taps him on the shoulder and tells him it is time; Killa looks at his burned hand in confusion. Videl tells Gohan she will see him in the second round; he blushes and agrees. The announcer tells the crowd what they already know: Videl is Mister Satan's daughter and works with the police to fight crime; she was also a champion of the junior division seven years previous. Spopovitch lost in the first round of the previous tournament, but is making another attempt after a "makeover". As Shin passes Spopovitch, he seems to sense that something is wrong with him.
