"Strong Rival" was composed by Norihito Sumitomo for the Majin Boo arc of Dragon Ball Kai. Its Kanzenshuu catalogue number is S-202, and its track listing is #16 on the Dragon Ball Z Kai The Final Chapters original soundtrack, released digitally on 11 February 2015 in France.[1]

The track's first scene-wise usage is in Dragon Ball Z Kai Episode 99, but it was first heard on the further-condensed Japanese domestic broadcast in Dragon Ball Kai Episode 104, which premiered on 11 May 2014.

Overview

"Strong Rival" is used 44 times in Dragon Ball Z Kai and 7 times in Dragon Ball Super. The track's mode is G Dorian (which has a minor root triad) and the instrumentation is mostly synthesized, including the bowed-string and percussion sounds.

Compositional Analysis

"Strong Rival" is composed in an uneven ternary form (ABA') with a single-chord ending.

Part A is 16 measures long and built from blocks of a 4-bar quartal synth statement over a 1-3-2-3 (G-B♭-A-B♭) bassline. The synth statement always has the same rhythm, but the harmony is stacked higher in statements 3 and 4, and the bassline is joined by another voice in parallel 5ths above (D-F-E-F). There are two iterations of each type of statement for a total of 16 bars.

Part B is 16 measures long and built from an 8-bar melodic statement on low-range distorted electric guitar. Its antecedent phrase is a simple 1-2-3-4-5 line in G Minor (G-A-B♭-C-D), and its consequent phrase is a complete G Dorian scale (G-A-B♭-C-D-E-F), with E♮ instead of the E♭ native to G Minor. This 8-bar melodic statement is repeated for a total of 16 bars. At the end of the first iteration, the guitar drops from F4 back down to G3. At the end of the second iteration, the guitar continues upward to G4 on the downbeat of A'.

Part A' (A-prime) is joined by the guitar, and there is only one of each type of synth statement from Part A, for a total of 8 bars. The ending is a single chord sustained for three full bars at the established tempo. The ending is often shortened to fit the scene.

Usage and Variations

The table below presents a scene-wise account of this track's usage in Dragon Ball Kai and Dragon Ball Super. Note that some usages in the international version (called "Dragon Ball Z Kai") are not reciprocated in the Japanese domestic version (called "Dragon Ball Kai"), and vice-versa. The total number of usages can therefore be expressed in several ways: as a total of each version of Kai and Super added together, or as a total of distinct scene-wise usages.

The order is scene-wise, regardless of episode debut date, and the terms used to describe the usage variations are contextualized in the Compositional Analysis section above. The officially-released BGM track is 1:48 in length. The usage lengths given under "Length and Variations" in the table are estimates and do not include extended taper times.

When Part B is omitted, sometimes a fade-in effect is used to transition from Part A to a corresponding bar in A' (A-prime). The necessitating difference is the semi-melodic presence of the electric guitar in A', a holdover from Part B.
