Il is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Il makes his debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 78, broadcast on 12 February 2017 on Fuji TV, as the Kaiōshin of Universe Eight.
Biography
Il is a Kaiōshin who loves making plans and gets fired up when they come together.[1]
Tournament of Power
Il learns that his universe is exempt from the Tournament of Power when he attends the Zen Exhibition Match with Korn and Liquir, the Angel and God of Destruction of Universe Eight. The Great Priest reveals that the Gods of Destruction and Kaiōshin of the participating universes will be erased along with their universe should they fail to win, while the Angels will be spared.[2]
Name
Il's name pun is unknown, but many Kaiōshin appear to have been named after deities, and a likely source for his name is El/Il (イル/Iru), a Northwest Semitic word meaning "god" or "deity", although also used to refer to (as a proper name) multiple major Ancient Near East deities.[3]
Performance
Il is voiced by Masakazu Morita, the voice of Whis. Morita played Tarble in the 2008 special Heya! Son Goku and Friends Return!!, and he also voices Rabanra of Universe Two and Kunshi of Universe Eleven's Pride Troopers in the Tournament of Power. In the Funimation dub, Il is voiced by Bob Reed in his first role for the Dragon Ball franchise.
