"The Kidnapping Demon, Oolong" is the fourth episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 19 March 1986, receiving a ratings share of 27.9%. The episode was written by Michiru Shimada and directed by Minoru Okazaki.

Synopsis

Goku and Bulma arrive at a certain village, where the fifth Dragon Ball is located. Goku is mistaken for the freely shape-shifting monster Oolong, who raids the village, and is hit by a sudden attack from one of the villagers! Bulma makes a promise with the villagers that "We'll take care of Oolong in exchange for the Six-Star Ball that's in this village". Goku disguises himself as one of the village girls, and the captured monster's true identity turns out to be a piglet, of all things!! Bulma and Goku obtain the Six-Star Ball. Taking in Oolong as their ally, they continue their adventure to find the remaining Dragon Balls!!

Summary

Prologue

It's three days since Bulma and Son Goku met the Turtle Hermit and received Kintoun. Goku is still having great fun on the cloud as Bulma struggles to keep up on the motorcycle. She becomes distracted for a moment and crashes the bike off of a hill, blaming Goku for the accident. Goku notices that the three-star ball, which had fallen from the bike, is glowing. They spy a nearby village and head over to see if the Dragon Ball is there.

Part A

The village appears deserted. Bulma uses the dragon radar and is sure the ball is somewhere in the area. Bulma wonders if the place is deserted, but Goku can sense that others are around. Bulma calls out if anyone is there, but still no answer. Goku bangs on a door labeled Sherman Priest. The door is locked, but Goku "unlocks" it with a punch and the pair step inside. Goku is attacked by a man wielding an axe and is struck on his head. The axe breaks. Goku survives but is in incredible pain. The man apologies to "Oolong-sama" and begs him not to take his daughter, but Goku has no idea who that is.

Realizing that Goku and Bulma were not "Oolong", the villages come out to greet their visitors. A young girl, the man's daughter, tends to Goku's head wound. He touches her crotch and verifies that she is a girl, much to everyone's embarrassment. Bulma smacks him and tells him that he can not touch women there.

The man explains that "Oolong" is the name of a shape-changing monster in the area. He has attached the village several times in the past, appearing as an oni and as a vampire, but no one know what he really looks like. He has abducted several of the girls from the village. Just yesterday, he appeared and demanded that the man offer his daughter as Oolong's bride. Goku asks why they do not just beat him up, but the man says that is impossible as he is too large. Oolong threatened to kill all the villages if they fought back or ran away.

Bulma pulls out the two-star ball and asks if they have seen such a thing in the village. Grandma Paozu says that she has seen one just like it, much to Bulma's pleasure. In fact, she's carrying it with her! It is the six-star ball. She recalls that her grandmother found it a long time ago. Bulma offers a trade: they will get rid of Oolong, in exchange for the ball. Grandma Paozu agrees. Before Bulma can say more, Goku is patting her crotch! Bulma strikes him again. The group seems shocked that Goku could defeat their monster for them, but Bulma assures them that he is super strong. Some of the other parents (of Hogg and Lee) implore them that it is not enough to just defeat Oolong, they must learn where he is keeping their children. Bulma has an idea.

A short time later, Goku is dressed in the little girl's clothes. He's not upset about wearing women's clothing, so much as he is unhappy that it is so loose-fitting. The plan will be that he will be taken by Oolong, free the girls, and then beat him up. Suddenly, Oolong arrives, transformed into an oni and carrying flowers. Bulma pushes Goku outside. When he asks if she will help too, she just responds that she will pray for him. Oolong arrives and asks Goku (with his back turned) if all he is brining is his staff. Goku says yes and to hurry up and take him. Goku is trembling because he has to pee, but Oolong thinks he is scared and transforms into something less threatening.

Part B

Oolong transforms into a dashing older man and politely asks the "young lady" (Goku) whether this makes her feel more comfortable, or if she would prefer a younger man. Bulma is immediately takes to the dashing figure and leaves the house where she had been hiding. She introduces herself as a 16-year old girl. The demon is intrigued and asks her for her bust size. Bulma responds 85. The demon likes that size, but thinks to himself that Bulma is older than he is. He is torn between the younger Goku and the older Bulma. As he decides to take them both, he spots Goku peeing against a tree. He rushes over at her impertinence and catches a glance. "She" has that thing which he loathes most! Oolong realizes that Goku is not the girl from yesterday. Oolong transforms into a giant bull and threatens Goku. Bulma realizes that she fell prey to his wiles flees back into the house.

Bulma calls out that Goku can attack him now, but not kill him. Goku is thrilled and casts off his female clothes. Goku taunts the bull and tries to get it to attack, but the bull keeps stalling and trying to bluff Goku into being scared. He looks at a nearby clock, 3:05, and runs off. Goku chases the bull out of town, only to discover a pig-person standing just outside the town gates. Goku asks the pig where the bull ran off to and Oolong points off to his left. Oolong is relieved that his true identity was not discovered.

The narrator explains that Oolong can only transform for five minutes at a time. Within those minutes, he can transform as often as he wants, but he must return to his original form after five minutes and stay that way for a further minute.

Goku returns to town disappointed. Oolong realizes that he will be unable to terrorize them if he runs away, transforms into an even more imposing figure: a knight holding (for some reason) a bowl of soup. Oolong threatens to dunk Goku in the soup and eat him, but Goku is unfazed and just wants the fight to start. Seeing that Oolong is not as impressive as they thought, a boy from town shoots him with a slingshot. Even though he appears to be wearing armor, the transformation does not protect him and Oolong is hurt by the stone. The kid's mother grabs him and flees back into a house. Oolong yells at her to take better care of her kids! Goku says that he thinks that Oolong is really very weak. Oolong challenges Goku to destroy a stack of bricks which the boy does using only one finger. Oolong is spooked! He transforms into a bat and flies away.

Bulma calls out to Goku to chase after him so they can rescue the captured daughters. Goku summons Kintoun and chases after him. As they depart, the villagers seem shocked that Oolong was really so weak. Oolong thinks to himself that he has to find a new village to raid, but just then Goku catches up to him. He transforms instead into a missile to fly even faster, but Kintoun still keeps the pace. They chase after each other past mountains and valleys until Oolong realizes that his time is almost up. He transforms back to himself in midair and begins falling. Goku swoops down and rescues him, surprised that Oolong was the pig all along.

Some time later, Oolong has been taken back to Aru Village. He apologizes to the villages who seem less angry now that they realize he was just a kid. Bulma demands that he take them back to the kidnapped girls and Oolong leads them out of the village, although remains securely tied up with Bulma holding the end of the rope. Oolong considers escaping, but Goku tells him that he will be sorry if he tries anything.

They arrive at Oolong's house, a mansion hidden in the woods nearby. Oolong brags that he stole money from all over the place to build it. The children's parents rush into the house to rescue them, only to find all of the girls well pampered and well cared-for. In fact, they are happier living with Oolong than working in the fields! Oolong complains that the girls that he kidnapped just wanted more and more from him and to please take them all back home. Their mission a success, Grandma Paozu hands over the six-star ball.

Funimation's 1995 dub was contracted out to BLT Productions in Vancouver, who hired Canadian voice actors typically associated with Ocean Group. Funimation redubbed the series in the early 2000s with their in-house cast.

Setting

  • Goku and Bulma have been traveling west for three days from Ryugadani since meeting with the Turtle Hermit. The village that they come to is 1000 km to the west of Mount Paozu, according to the dragon radar in Dragon Ball Episode 1.
• Previous attacks on the village (presumably also from Age 749) are briefly depicted in flashback, including a flashback to the previous day, September 4.

Variations

• In the Funimation English dub, Sherman Priest's daughter is called "Pocawatha", likely a portmanteau of Pocohontas and Hiawatha.
• When Bulma flirts with Oolong in the English dub, she does not give him her age, and he does not think to himself that she is older than him, leaving dub watchers in the dark about the fact that Oolong is close in age to the girls he abducts from Aru Village.

Tidbits

• This is the first episode of the series not to feature Shuu, Mai, or Pilaf. It also marks the introduction of Oolong.

Background Text

• 
  As the narrator is explaining Oolong's transformation power, the text reads ここであかそうウーロンのなぞ (Koko de akasou ūron no nazo, English: "Here's the mystery of Oolong").
• 
  While Oolong is preparing to attack Goku, the kanji on his armor reads 根性 (Konjō), for "guts" as in strength and willpower.
• 
  Oolong's mansion includes the characters for 烏龍 (Ūron), the name of the tea in Japanese and Chinese. Oolong's character name is generally written in katakana as ウーロン (also Ūron). It is unclear why the characters are reversed in this image.
