Summary

As Jiren and Goku face off, Whis observes that Jiren is finally taking this fight seriously. Kuririn notes that this is the first time they have seen an aura around him. Vermoud and the rest of the Universe 11 bench are watching, rapt. Vegeta watches as Goku begins to walk towards Jiren, then attacks. Goku takes a couple of hits, but otherwise dodges Jiren effortlessly. Tenshinhan asks how Goku is still standing, and Whis explains that Goku is getting deeper into the technique, prioritizing the prevention of damage to his vitals. Jiren asks Goku whether he is just going to dodge all day, and Goku remarks that it is not like Jiren to be chatty. Jiren aims a blast at Goku, and he dodges that too, appearing behind Jiren. Jiren remarks that Goku seems relaxed, and this surprises Goku; he says this is not easy. Jiren attacks again, and Goku dodges. He tells Jiren that all he has done is to get rid of superfluous emotion; his heart is as calm as the gentle streams of Mount Paozu.

Jiren gets angry and powers up further. Goku closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. Jiren attacks, and when Goku opens his eyes again, his hair has gone fully silver, and he delivers a devastating punch to Jiren's gut. Kuririn wonders what is up with Goku's hair, and Beerus asks Whis to confirm. Whis tells him there is no doubt. Beerus says he thought so; any god would recognize that. Indeed, the Gods of Destruction from the exempt universes are astonished that a mere mortal could pull off this technique; Cae is also amazed, and Vermoud is not happy. Whis goes on: Goku has perfected Ultra Instinct.

Gohan notes that Jiren is on his knees, but then he jumps up, using a floating piece of the arena as leverage to attack. The battle intensifies and the arena begins to shake, but Goku still has the clear advantage. The Universe 11 bench despairs, while the Universe 7 bench celebrates. Jiren fires a blast at Goku that Vegeta barely manages to dodge; Goku takes it head-on, and the blast cuts through the bench between Universes 7 and 11. Mohito and Kusu, the Angels of Universe 9 and Universe 10 respectively, hop over to where the Universe 7 folks are sitting as their former seat is destroyed. Meanwhile, Goku comes up behind and above Jiren with a Kamehameha that pierces straight through the arena. Everyone thinks that Jiren is gone, but Markarita points out that he is still hanging on where the blast punctured the bottom of the arena.

As Jiren climbs back up, he tells Goku that taking advantage of openings is not true strength. He powers up again, but he still cannot hit Goku, while all of Goku's hits land. Goku's friends are excited and encourage Goku to hurry up and eliminate Jiren, but Whis does not think it will be that easy. Jiren's potential is unknowable and he is also improving on the battlefield despite appearances, and Goku's use of Ultra Instinct is taking a toll on his body because he has not trained enough to be able to wield it properly. Jiren finally manages to grab Goku's leg and toss him, and he says that Goku and his ilk could never match his drive, and that is why he will not lose. Cae is excited to see that Jiren is still in it, and Vermoud says that of course Goku cannot beat Jiren with a trick he just now learned. Whis says it is a battle of attrition now. Which one will run out of steam first?

The battle is happening so quickly now that Kuririn and Piccolo cannot follow it, but Whis sees the moment when Goku's steam finally runs out. Vegeta sees it too and rushes to catch Goku as Jiren's punch sends him flying toward the edge of the arena. Goku has returned to his normal form, and Vegeta asks him what is going on. The Universe 7 observers panic, and the Universe 11 observers celebrate. Goku apologizes to Vegeta, telling him he needs to train more.

Jiren declares that he has given everything for justice, for his master. He cannot accept defeat. He will become the perfect force for justice that his master envisioned. Vegeta asks if he really is not there yet. Jiren says not yet, but soon, because he will be the victor. Vegeta asks if that is really his wish, but Jiren says no; he will wish for the resurrection of his master Gitchen, who was slain by a monster. Vegeta is surprised at this wish, but Jiren says he is done talking. In the stands, Dispo remarks that he did not know that Jiren was still that affected by Gitchen's death, and Casserale wonders why, after all this time. Toppo tells them that there was one thing Jiren never earned: approval from his master. He was never recognized as Gitchen's successor, and Toppo does not know why; Jiren assumed it was because he was not strong enough, which is why he is so dedicated to growing his power, and he probably wants Gitchen to see him now so that he can finally gain that approval. Dispo is taken aback by this humanizing detail. On the battlefield, Vegeta scoffs, telling Jiren it sounds like a selfish wish to him; he wants to bring his master back just so that he can tell him what a good boy he is. Jiren tells him to be quiet, but Vegeta says Jiren is relying on others more than anyone else here. Jiren gets angry and powers up, then charges. Vegeta tells Goku to look sharp; it is time for them to fight together, while Jiren is weakened. Less than three minutes remain in the Tournament of Power.

Together, Goku and Vegeta fight Jiren. Gohan is amazed that Vegeta was the one to suggest they work together, and Piccolo says he has put his pride aside in hopes of winning. Kuririn is impressed at how well they are doing against Jiren, and Beerus says that this is why he told them to work together from the start. He shouts encouragement at them. Cae is impressed that their attacks are perfectly in sync and wonders why they have not been fighting together all along. Was it some kind of strategy? Vermoud says that maybe Gitchen was right all along. The real reason why he never recognized Jiren is because Jiren was always a solitary fighter. Gitchen had him join the Pride Troopers to teach him the lesson of teamwork.

On the battlefield, Goku tells Vegeta that their two-on-one training with Whis is really paying off. Beerus asks Whis if that was the purpose of him training them, and Whis laughs, saying they did not even realize. Vegeta encourages Goku to stay with him; if they keep this up, they will knock him off in no time! Goku agrees; they will take care of him for good!
