"Who Will the 100 Million Zenni Peace Reward Go To...?!" is the first episode of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super. The episode first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 05 July 2015, receiving a ratings share of 7.9%. It was written by Yoshifumi Fukushima and directed by Kōji Ogawa.

Synopsis

It is some time after the fierce battle with Majin Boo.[note 1] While the days pass peacefully, Goku works tilling the soil like Chi-Chi had ordered him, while still finding time to train. Meanwhile, newlyweds Gohan and Videl are living happily, but…?! Goten wants to give Gohan a wedding present, and Trunks offers his advice! What item do they end up picking?![1]

Summary

After a brief recap of the end of the Majin Boo arc, the narrator explains that Earth is at peace. Goku is plowing a field when Goten stops by to bring him lunch. Goku has Goten drive the tractor for him while he trains, but soon has to rescue Goten when he accidentally drives off a cliff. Goku explains that he is continuing to train in case any more strong enemies appear, even though Chi-Chi demands that he work to earn some money. Out in space, an alien race offers Beerus their best food in an attempt to appease him. Beerus finds the food all right enough, so in return he only destroys half the planet.

Mister Satan's imagination.

Back on Earth, the press is interviewing Mister Satan about him receiving the 100 million zenni World Hero Prize, when Mister Boo angrily wanders out saying he is hungry. The reporters wonder who this strange person is, and how he dares to be so rude to the hero Mister Satan, but Satan explains that Boo is an alien and his number one disciple. After a tense stare-down, Satan manages to get Boo to go away. He then excuses himself to use the restroom... but instead goes and gives Boo a massage to calm him down, promising to give him lots of tasty food later. He calls out to Videl asking where the chocolate is, but Videl is out in town with Gohan, where she has just bought him a book for his studies. Gohan feels guilty that Videl is always the one buying him things while he never buys her anything in return, but Videl is happy to help Gohan become a great scholar. Piccolo secretly observes the couple from nearby, looking displeased for some reason.

Goten and Trunks face off against a giant snake.

Goten asks Trunks what gift he should give Videl to commemorate Gohan and Videl's marriage. After looking at some rings, Trunks thinks they should get her some beauty wash instead, but Goten is unable to afford any of the high-priced products with his allowance. An old man likewise complains about the cosmetics prices, saying the hot springs water from out in the country where he lives are at least as effective. Goten and Trunks decide to get this water for free, and follow the old man's directions out into the country, but when they get to the hot spring they find it crowded with people. Instead, they go get water from an ordinary river nearby, and wind up battling a giant snake that lives there. Goten starts charging up a Kamehameha, but Trunks warns him that he will blow away the people in the nearby hot spring too. Despite this brief difficulty, the pair are victorious and return with a bottle of water. When Goten gives his gift to Videl, she is surprised to find that it is just ordinary water, but is glad to receive it all the same.

Later, Goten tells Goku about all this out in the field as the sun sets. Goten notes how big Gohan and Videl's house is, and Goku is grateful Mister Satan had such a large home built for them. Mister Satan himself drives up and tells Goku about the prize money. He thinks Goku is the one who truly deserves the prize money, especially since Vegeta has already turned it down, and his family is rich anyway. Goku at first refuses the money, but changes his mind when Goten points out that with the money, Chi-Chi will let him go off and train at Kaiō's planet. This is indeed precisely what happens when Goku presents Chi-Chi with the money: Chi-Chi only asks Goku that he come back home from Kaiō's occasionally, and he teleports off. At this point the Turtle Hermit barges in demanding that Goku use some of the prize money to buy him dirty videos, but Chi-Chi angrily sends him packing.

In the Kaiōshin Realm, Kibitoshin ominously tells Elder Kaiōshin that another planet has been destroyed...

Continuity

Manga

The events of the manga and the anime diverge significantly. Below are the main differences, along with the chapters where the events of this episode occur or contrast.

  • The Viz adaptation of the time skip in chapter 1 of the manga is the only accurate English translation: "Time has passed since then..."
  • In the manga, while Goku trains as Goten is driving the tractor, he imagines himself fighting against Freeza, Cell, and Majin Boo. The scene otherwise progresses more or less the same.
  • The first planet Beerus visits in the manga is a different one than the one he destroys in the anime. The inhabitants are bug-like rather than boar-like, and he destroys the entire planet, not half, because they tried to poison him, not because the food was greasy.

Adaptations

The official Toei Animation timeline places this arc in Age 778, four years after the defeat of Majin Boo.[2]

There are four official English adaptations of this episode:

  1. The Toei Animation simulcast subtitles distributed to simulcast platforms (including Funimation's streaming service);
  2. The Funimation subtitles by Steven J. Simmons, included with all English home video releases, including digital purchase platforms like Amazon;
  3. The Funimation English dub; and
  4. The Bang Zoom! dub produced for Toonami Asia.

The notes on the Funimation dub are contrasted with their own Simmons subtitles unless otherwise noted.

  • After the recap of the Majin Boo arc, the narrator says: "Some time has passed..." (しばらくの月日が流れた). The Toei Animation simulcast subtitles, the Funimation subtitles, and the Funimation dub all interpret 月日 (つきひ tsukihi) too narrowly, as "several months" or "a few months". At the beginning of the Battle of Gods arc, four years have passed since Majin Boo was defeated.
    • Toei's official Dragon Ball timeline confirms that the events of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods take place in Age 778, four years after the defeat of Majin Boo in Age 774.[2] This timeline is widely used and officially applies to Dragon Ball Super.[3]
    • Even the wish to erase everyone's memories of Majin Boo, six months after the battle, takes place in Age 774.
    • Pan's birth year has always been given as Age 779, since Daizenshuu 7.[4] The 28th Tenka'ichi Budōkai takes place before her 5th birthday in Age 784, ten years after the battle with Majin Boo.
    • Gohan and Videl would have still been in high school, or barely out of high school, if Battle of Gods took place less than a year after Boo.
    • When Beerus remembers the name of the Super Saiyan God in episode 2, Whis notes that he is still cranky (after waking up from his 39-year slumber), which precludes the possibility that the first few episodes take place over the course of four years. See the episode 2 continuity notes for more details along those lines.
  • In the Funimation dub, when Goku tells Goten that he has to keep training in case someone like Majin Boo comes along again, he says: "I've gotta keep training to keep you guys safe." In the original line, he does not say anything about keeping people safe.
    • The Bang Zoom! dub is a more faithful translation, in line with both the Toei simulcast subs and Funimation's Simmons subs: "I have to keep training. I have to be ready!"
  • After Beerus half-destroys the alien planet, he says that too much grease is not good for the body. In the Funimation dub, he adds: "Makes you sluggish all day. I've done this galaxy a favor."
  • In the Funimation dub, Videl tells Gohan: "The best gift you can give me is to keep on studying hard, Gohan. Then I'll have a scholar as arm candy." In the original line, she only says: "because you're going to be a fine scholar!"
  • When Mister Satan asks Goku if he has seen the news, Goku tells him he hasn't heard anything. In the Funimation dub, he says: "No, I don't watch TV."

Censorship

The English dub of this episode was broadcast with censorship on Toonami Africa,[5] on ABC ME in Australia,[6] and POP! in the UK.[7] There were also censored foreign language dubs airing on Toonami France,[8] Spacetoon (Arabic dub),[9] and Cartoon Network in Brazil,[10] among others. The home releases, where available, are uncensored.

Episode Notes

  • The first piece of background music in the show (used during the recap of the battle with Majin Boo), while being a new recording, is an arrangement of "CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA" (the first opening theme to the Dragon Ball Z TV series).
The Ox Demon King's "Beef Goodwill Ambassador" certificate.
  • While Goten is talking to Goku about his training, Goten remarks that his grandfather, the Ox Demon King, is not making enough money to support them all. The Ox Demon King is shown sitting at a desk eating noodles, and next to him is a statue of a bull with a "Beef Goodwill Ambassador" (牛肉親善大使) certificate prominently displayed right above it on the wall. The title on the certificate is a play on Gyūmaō's name, which can be directly translated as "Bull Demon King".

  • The title of the book Son Gohan is carrying — "Muzukashii Hon" — means "difficult book" in Japanese (難しい本).

Staff & Cast Notes

  • There is one notable voice change in this episode: Shin'ichirō Ōta plays the role of Kaiōshin (credited here as "Kibito-Kaiōshin"), rather than the character's original voice actor Yūji Mitsuya. Shin'ichirō Ōta previously took over the role of Kaiōshin for the entirety of the Dragon Ball GT TV series, but himself was replaced by Yūji Mitsuya in the "refreshed" Dragon Ball Kai TV series and the theatrical film Battle of Gods.
  • This episode marks the first animated production of the entire Dragon Ball franchise not to feature original sound effects from Hidenori Arai, most likely due to his existing sound effects obligations to the One Piece TV series during the production of Dragon Ball Super. Instead, the series' sound effects are created by fellow Fizz Sound artist Mutsuhiro Nishimura.

Production

Animation

This episode is supervised by Yukihiro Kitano, but Kitano's style is barely evident in the episode, which is heavily corrected by series animation director Tadayoshi Yamamuro and, to a much lesser extent, chief animation supervisor Takeo Ide, who is responsible for the odd-numbered episodes of Dragon Ball Super.

This episode features an appearance by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, best known for his work as character designer for the second half of Dragon Ball Z and then Dragon Ball GT. Nakatsuru provides key animation for every Dragon Ball series, beginning with Dragon Ball Episode 50, and his work on this episode of Dragon Ball Super is his last contribution to the franchise.

The Dragon Ball Super anime was announced on 28 April 2015,[12] and a summary of Episode 1 was published in Weekly Shōnen Jump on 29 June 2015 in advance of the broadcast.[1]

Goten wants to give Gohan a wedding present, and Trunks offers his advice! What item do they end up picking?!

This was the first indication that the series would begin after Gohan and Videl were married; earlier plot information implied that their wedding would be upcoming.[13]

  • Goten's fall in the tractor might be a reference to Gohan's waterfall mishap in Dragon Ball Z Episode 1, though Gohan unconsciously saved himself, and Goten could have saved himself more easily than Gohan.
Giant snake in Dragon Ball Z Episode 288.
  • The giant snake that attacks Trunks and Goten at the hot springs appears to have been modeled on a similar snake appearing in Dragon Ball Z Episode 288. The snake tries to steal dinosaur eggs that Goku is watching, so he tosses the snake far away to protect the eggs.
