Markarita is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Markarita makes her debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 78, broadcast on 12 February 2017 on Fuji TV, as the Angel of Universe 11.

Biography

Markarita always gives candid advice to her Kaiōshin and God of Destruction, who are insufficiently strict.[2] She is characterized by her use of the odd expression "desumasu".[3]

Tournament of Power

Zen Exhibition Match

When the Great Priest informs the gods of each universe about the upcoming Tournament of Power, he invites them to attend the Zen Exhibition Match to sate the curiosity of the Omni-King from the future, who has never seen a martial arts tournament. Markarita attends along with her God of Destruction Vermoud and Cae, the Kaiōshin of Universe 11. The Great Priest creates an arena in a void that appears to be located beneath the Omni-King's palace, and brings in the gods from all the other universes to observe the match. When Goku speaks casually to the Omni-Kings, calling them "Zen-chan", Cae worries that Universe 7 might have upset them.[4]

Name

Markarita's name is likely derived from "margarita" (マルガリータ/marugariita), a cocktail consisting of tequila, triple sec, and lime or lemon juice, often served with salt or sugar on the rim of the glass. The character name removes a diacritic sign to the third syllable of the katakana used to write "margarita" in Japanese, altering its pronunciation from "ga" to "ka". This name pun follows the theme of Gods of Destruction and Angels being named after alcoholic beverages.[5]

Performance

Markarita is voiced by Ai Sasaki, who has voiced a few minor roles in Dragon Ball Super. In the FUNimation dub, Markarita is voiced by Jamie Marchi who has voiced several minor roles for the franchise before including Idasa's Mom and dating back to the 2005 redub of the space orphan filler in Dragon Ball Z.
