"The Universe 11 God of Destruction Candidate, Toppo" is the twenty-ninth chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga series written and illustrated by Toyotarō, with supervision and guidance from original Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama. It was first published in Japan in the December 2017 issue of Shueisha's V-Jump, with a sale date of 21 October 2017.
Summary
Vermoud catches the other gods in a series of bubbles, but Liquir is able to jump in and deflect the incoming attack, only to himself be caught off-guard by Helles. The Omni-Kings are having difficulty keeping up with the action. Rumoosh freezes everyone in their tracks with a great roar and runs in to attack. At this point, even Goku is having a difficult time making sense of the ridiculous power and insanity of the match.
The gods continue their assault against each other, but the Omni-Kings have had enough of not being able to follow anything. The Great Priest appears in the ring, stopping Beerus and Quitela from punching each other simply by raising a finger against each incoming fist. The match is cancelled! Vermoud lifts his head from the ground with a grin.
The Omni-Kings consider throwing out the entire idea of a tournament, but Goku appeals for them to reconsider; after all, their fights will not quite be at the level of the Gods of Destruction. The Omni-Kings would like a demonstration, and with Toppo here from Universe 11, they have a perfect opportunity to show off. In order to reign things in even further, the Great Priest announces that flying, weapons, and killing will all be prohibited, and the first person to touch the outside of the ring will be the loser.
Whis is questioned by the Universe 8 angel Korn about Goku's manners toward the Omni-Kings, but Whis explains that Goku actually helped him once, and so there is a familiarity between them.
Toppo asks whether Goku is also a God of Destruction candidate, but Goku responds that he has no interest in that and simply wants to get stronger. As the fight begins, Goku rushes in as regular Super Saiyan; Beerus and Whis figure Goku is going to conserve his energy and observe for the time being. With no attacks landing, Toppo asks for Goku to get serious. The future Omni-King is impressed by Goku's transformations; the present Omni-King says that Goku has even more in store for them! The Great Priest asks Whis how many transformations Goku has. The Omni-Kings would like to see Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, Super Saiyan God, and Super Saiyan Blue! There does not seem to be much of a change with Super Saiyan 2, so Goku is asked to ramp it up to Super Saiyan 3, which the Omni-Kings think looks scary and fun! Goku is still unable to land anything against Toppo, who finally responds with impressive speed and punches of his own.
Goku is forced to ramp things up again, this time to Super Saiyan God, which even the Gods of Destruction and Toppo acknowledge as having the feeling of a true god. As Toppo fires, Goku instinctively jumps up to fly away, but is quickly reminded that this is prohibited. Taking the hit, it looks as if Goku will fall out of the ring, but he is able to grab the edge at the last moment to flip himself back in. Beerus yells for Goku to turn Super Saiyan Blue and finish the match, but as Goku transforms and pulls back a punch, Toppo lands a massive kick squarely up into Goku's stomach, launching him up and out of the ring. Toppo has won!
Goku is impressed with Toppo's power, but he is only the second-strongest from Universe 11. Even Toppo has a long way to go to reach Jiren, who is even stronger than their God of Destruction, Vermoud…!
Interstitial Page
In the interstitial page following this chapter in the sixth collected volume, Shin asks Whis whether all the other angels are really his siblings, and Whis confirms that they are, and that Kusu of Universe 10, who is standing behind him with Gowasu, is the oldest. Kusu says "peace", flashing the peace sign at them, and Gowasu is confused.
Continuity
The events of the manga and the anime diverge significantly. Below are the main differences, along with the episodes where the events of this chapter occur or contrast.
- The Zen Exhibition Match takes an entirely different form in the anime: the best of three matches between members of Universe 7 and Universe 9, the two lowest-ranked universes. This takes place over the course of episodes 79 to 82.
- The arena and the spectator platforms for each universe are more or less the same, but the participating universes have larger platforms than the non-participating universes.
- The Gods of Destruction do not fight each other in the anime's version of the Zen Exhibition Match, but the gods from three of the four exempt universes (Iwen, Arak, Liquir of universes 1, 5, and 8 respectively) have a short match to test out the durability of the Tournament of Power arena in episode 96. The Omni-Kings are napping during their fight.
- The Gods of Destruction are never considered as potential participants in the Tournament of Power by anyone in the anime.
- Rumoosh does not exhibit the special power of a battle roar in the anime.
- The tournament rules are detailed in episode 81 of the anime. Right after this, Toppo reveals himself and challenges Son Goku to battle in the name of justice.
- In the anime, the other universes hold Goku responsible for the impending destruction of their universes.
- In the anime, Toppo is the only mortal present outside of those from Universes 7 and 9, and he is hooded when he first appears in 78. It is not revealed that he is a candidate to be a God of Destruction until episode 125, near the end of the Tournament of Power. Cae introduces Toppo to the Omni-Kings as his "bodyguard" in episode 82.
- Toppo does not use god ki in the anime until episode 125.
- Goku fights Toppo in the anime as Super Saiyan, then as Super Saiyan Blue.
- There is an anime example of Goku going through all his forms as he does in this chapter, but it's against Jiren in episode 109, which aired on 08 October 2017, and he skips Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan 3. This chapter was published on 21 October 2017.
- Goku is about to add Kaiō-ken to Super Saiyan Blue when the Great Priest notices that the Omni-Kings are getting a little too excited. He calls off the match, much to their disappointment, telling Goku and Toppo to save it for the Tournament of Power.
- Toppo refuses to shake Goku's hand after the battle, and warns him about Jiren, the strongest in Universe 11.
- It is not explicitly confirmed that Jiren is stronger than Vermoud until episode 110 of the anime.
Notes
- Rumoosh's roar paralyzes Goku and causes the Kaiōshin to collapse unconscious. Whis tells Goku that even the Gods of Destruction should barely be standing after hearing it, implying that Goku is close their level. He still has difficulty following the fight, as do the Omni-Kings. As Goku and Toppo fight Iwen observes that this fight is already on their level.
- This chapter is mislabeled as Chapter 28 in the Viz English translation of the sixth collected volume, though it is labeled correctly in the table of contents.
