Intellectual property hooligans in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other areas have copied Dragon Ball CDs to sell for their own personal gain. Traditionally, the two main bootleg companies involved with mass anime soundtrack duplication have been SonMay (SM) and EverAnime (EA). Another company called “Smile Face” has bootlegged the Dragon Ball Z Complete Song Collection set, and may have produced other copies. These bootleg companies put their respective logos on the back of their CDs, which makes it easy to tell the difference (other than the obvious price reduction). In the past, many of these “companies” have actually been fronts for organized crime, such as the Triads.
These types of bootlegs are digital copies; they sound as great as the original, because their are exact duplicates. Beyond the company logos, another way to tell the difference between bootlegs and the original Japanese releases are the extras such as full color booklets, box sets that come in actual boxes, and first-print runs that come packaged with special extras like posters.
That all being said, this page will focus on bootlegs that are “original” CDs, and not simply copies of already existing CDs. In other words, these companies throw different songs together from multiple CDs, and sell it as a “new” compilation. Keep in mind that there are many more bootleg CDs out there; these are just the compilation ones. There are bootleg CDs of nearly all of the Hit Song Collection CDs, the Never Ending Story and other multi-disc sets, and nearly all of the video game soundtracks. Make sure you know what you are buying before you purchase!
