On 12 October 2023 at New York Comic Con, Toei Animation officially announced that production was underway on an all-new TV series for the Dragon Ball franchise — Dragon Ball Daima — which was slated for a Fall 2024 debut. The series’ story and characters were in development by original manga author Akira Toriyama. Yoshitaka Yashima and Aya Komaki were brought on-board to direct, while veteran animator Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru was set to return as character designer. A teaser trailer was released alongside the announcement at the convention’s “Dragon Ball Special Panel” moderated by Monica Rial (English voice of Bulma).
In addition to the teaser trailer, franchise executive producer Akio Iyoku shared a written message from Akira Toriyama:
Hello. I’m Akira Toriyama.
I’m currently working on a new Dragon Ball. The Title is “Dragon Ball DAIMA”.
“DAIMA” is a made-up term, which in Japanese characters would be “大魔” or in English would be something like “Evil.”
Due to a conspiracy, Goku and his friends are turned small. In order to fix things, they’ll head off to a new world! It’s a grand adventure with intense action in an unknown and mysterious world.
Since Goku has to make up for his petite size, he uses his Nyoibo (Power Pole) to fight, something not seen in a long time.
I came up with the story and settings, as well as a lot of the designs. I’m actually putting a lot more into this than usual!
Things will unfold that close in on the mysteries of the Dragon Ball world. Hope you enjoy these different-from-usual battles that are cute and powerful!!
— AKIRA TORIYAMA
It was announced on 11 March 2024, shortly after Akira Toriyama’s passing, that the TV series would be broadcast across Japan on Fuji TV. The announcement first came via a special appearance by Masako Nozawa (Son Goku) and executive producer Akio Iyoku at the “Fuji TV Anime Lineup Announcement 2024” virtual event held at 9:30am that morning, with it then later being shared online by the official Dragon Ball Twitter account. A few months later the series’ main visual was revealed, along with a new trailer, new character reveals, and an announcement of an October 2024 release timeframe.
The series eventually received a concrete premiere date of 11 October 2024 just a month prior to its debut, and it was simultaneously announced the series would indeed be returning to Fuji TV. However, unlike the preceding Dragon Ball Kai and Dragon Ball Super series (which both aired early Sunday mornings), Dragon Ball Daima would fill the 11:40pm slot on Friday nights. Following this, a steady trickle of various new character and voice actor reveals, musical theme announcements, and updated key visuals were released in a build-up to the series’ premiere.
This page will updated as more information about the series becomes available and its broadcast continues; alternatively, you can always find the latest information tagged in our main news archive.
