It’s Saturday, and I still need to post an article today, so… I dunno, I guess Toriyama said a thing once

[!!– introduce Toriyama and say a bunch of words–!!]

Akira Toriyama made a name for himself in the 1980s with the megahit Dr. Slump before going right into his next series, the megamegahit Dragon Ball. The series’ fans are perceptive, but not as perceptive as the series’ original author.

Toriyama has a good eye for clear design and layout on the page, which makes for an enjoyable reading experience. Though his art style changed over the years, it was always black and white on the page, sometimes with color chapters to spice things up a bit. There were interesting color changes from the comic to the television series, such as Vegeta having red/brown hair early on, which was defined as black in the comic when Toriyama eventually showed the character in full color. Toriyama sure drew a lot of characters!

In previous interviews, Toriyama commented on choosing voice actors, making toy models, and more. In a previous Q&A for story volume of Dragon Ball‘s super exciting line, the creator was questioned on why hair turns gold on a Super Saiyan. Naturally, Toriyama does have an answer, and it is one you do not expect.

“Because when he became a Super Saiyan, we wouldn’t have to do the black fill. It also had the effect of making it easy to tell from his appearance that Goku had gotten stronger, so it killed two birds with one stone.”

So there you have it. One of the world’s best comic book writers changed the color of a character’s hair to make it easier to draw!

[!!– unrelated, but say something about Super –!!]

Dragon Ball Super recently kicked off its ‘Universal Survival Ark’. You can check out the brief summary for it below:

“At Goku’s request, the Omni-Kings’ “Tournament of Power” martial arts tournament between universes now begins! …But this also proves to be the beginning of universal destruction. What awaits the victors of this tournament, and the vanquished…?! How will these intense team battles between the elites of each universe turn out…?!”

The Dragon Ball Super airs in Japan and can be streamed on the internet with simulcast sites. Diehard fans may want to check on the CARTOON NETWORK for its official English dub!
