Kusu is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Kusu makes her debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 78, broadcast on 12 February 2017 on Fuji TV, as the Angel of Universe Ten.

Biography

Kusu is the oldest child of the Great Priest.[1] An innocent angel who looks like a young girl despite her age, she is enchanted by the sharp muscular condition of the representative warriors for Universe Ten.[2] She is always advising Rumoosh and Gowasu on the difference between good and evil, but clashes between good and evil get her blood racing despite herself.[3]

Tournament of Power

Kusu attends the Zen Exhibition Match with Rumoosh and Gowasu, the God of Destruction and Kaiōshin of Universe Ten, where they learn that the participation of their universe in the Tournament of Power is required. The Great Priest reveals that the Gods of Destruction and Kaiōshin of the participating universes will be erased along with their universe should they fail to win, while the Angels will be spared.[4]

Name

Kusu's name is likely derived from Kūsu (くうす/Kūsu). When Awamori, a distilled beverage unique to Okinawa, is aged for three years or more, it is called kūsu (古酒; "old liquor"), often written in katakana (クース) or in kanji with the appropriate furigana. This pronunciation is unique to Awamori and Okinawa; elsewhere in Japan, the word 古酒 is pronounced koshu and refers to aged sake. The character name simply drops the vowel elongation. This name pun follows the theme of Gods of Destruction and Angels being named after alcoholic beverages.[5]

Performance

Kusu is voiced by Hiromi Kon'no in her first role for the Dragon Ball franchise.
