Earthlings

The word "Earthling" (地球人; Chikyūjin) in Dragon Ball refers to any being of terrestrial origin. Since the majority the series is spent on Earth, it is no surprise that this group is the largest character base. Akira Toriyama, a nature loving person himself, used many inhabitants of Earth for the basis of his characters, not just humans. Although most of these non-human Earthling characters had human characteristics (walking upright and talking), they were classified separately from ordinary humans.

Aliens, or extraterrestrials, in the Dragon World are beings not originally from the Planet Earth. After Akira Toriyama had exhausted all of the Earth's strongest warriors, he decided to expand to the rest of the universe. From that point on, the series was never the same. Toriyama was now able to create a much wider variety of characters at will, specifically ridiculously strong opponents for Goku and friends to face off against. In addition, many of the Earth's greatest warriors turned out to be aliens themselves, including the main protagonist, Son Goku.

Enma-daiō Japanese VA: Daisuke Gōri Description.

God Japanese VA: Takeshi Aono (DB, Z, Kai 4-51), Bin Shimada (Kai 66-68) Description.

Kaiō Japanese VA: Jōji Yanami Description.

Kaiōshin Japanese VA: Yūji Mitsuya (Z, DBZ: Battle of Gods), Shin'ichirō Ōta (GT) Description.

Karin Japanese VA: Ichirō Nagai (DB, Z, Kai), Naoki Tatsuta (Z 217-241) A cat sage who lives at the top of Karin Tower, located in the Karin Holy Land. He serves as a go-between for the God of Earth and everyone else, and originally came from the afterlife. He grows the senzu and is the keeper of the large Kinto-Un from which all smaller ones come. He trains Goku to defeat Tao Pai-pai, and later gives him the Super God Water to make him strong enough to defeat Piccolo Daimaō. After that he continues to serve as an adviser to Goku for the rest of the series.

Shenlong Japanese VA: Kenji Utsumi (DB, Z 21-100, Kai 8-51), Masaharu Satō (Z 192-193), Shin Aomori (Z 240, Z M13), Tesshō Genda (Z M12), Daisuke Gōri (GT), Ryūzaburō Ōtomo (Kai 97) Shenlong is the dragon that appears when all seven of the Earth's Dragon Balls have been gathered together. Shenlong, and the Dragon Balls themselves, have many restrictions and rules in place regarding the types and amounts of wishes. As a general note, be sure to know what you're wishing for in advance, as Shenlong can become quite impatient and irritable.

Bulma

Japanese VA: Hiromi Tsuru

An intelligent and spirited young girl in search of the seven Dragon Balls. She uses state-of-the-art technology, such as the Dragon Radar and Hoi Poi Capsules, to track them down. In search of the Dragon Balls, which she wants to use to wish for a boyfriend, she stumbles upon Goku, who she decides to take with her as a bodyguard.

Umigame (lit. "Sea Turtle")

Japanese VA: Daisuke Gōri (DB, Z, GT), Takahiro Fujimoto (Kai)

Kame-Sen'nin's trusty turtle, Umigame constantly complains about his master's perverted actions. He tries to keep him in-line around the ladies, but his objections usually result in a scolding. He plays a relatively small part in the manga, but he has quite a few large roles in the anime.

Oolong

Japanese VA: Naoki Tatsuta

A perverted shape-shifting pig, Oolong terrorizes a small village and abducts their girls. As Oolong fights Goku, it is apparent that he doesn't acquire any special skills from whatever he shape-shifts into, and that he can hold a form for no more than five minutes. It is soon obvious that Oolong is more of a spectator than a helper when it comes to fighting. He is also considered a coward by most, especially Bulma.

Pu'er

Japanese VA: Naoko Watanabe

Pu'er is Yamcha's shape-shifting friend and together they rob anyone that wanders into their desert. Like Oolong, Pu'er has the ability to change his shape into any form. Though unlike Oolong, Pu'er can hold that form an indefinite amount of time.

Lunch

Japanese VA: Mami Koyama

Kame-Sen'nin sends Kuririn and Goku off to bring back a pichi-pichi gal, and the two eventually rescue and return with a peculiar girl... Lunch. The boys soon find that she's much more than meets the eye, as her other self is revealed when she sneezes.

Grandma Paozu

Japanese VA: Reiko Suzuki

An inhabitant of the village that Oolong terrorizes, she posseses the Six-Star Ball that Goku and Bulma are in search of. In exchange for saving her village from the dreaded Oolong, she promises to give Bulma her Dragon Ball.

Baby Gamera

Japanese VA: Naoki Tatsuta

Baby Gamera is a really neat mini-version of Gamera, which Kame-Sen'nin uses to travel to Mount Frypan while riding on his back. He can pull his arms and legs into his body and release a fire through the holes, propelling him and his rider through the air while spinning.

Sno

Japanese VA: Naoko Watanabe (DB), Mayumi Tanaka (Z 285)

A girl from Jingle Village that saves Goku's life after his plane crashes into the snow. In gratitude, Goku sets off to rescue the mayor of her village, who has been taken hostage by the Red Ribbon Army. Years later, a grown-up Sno contributes her energy to the final Genki-Dama at the end of the series. It's at this point that her name is first mentioned in the manga proper, although she's called by name in the anime from the start.

Sno's Father

Japanese VA: Masaharu Satō

Like the other men in Jingle Village, Sno's father was forced by the Red Ribbon Army to search for the nearby Dragon Ball, and warned that they would kill the mayor if he resisted.

Sno's Mother

Japanese VA: Reiko Suzuki

Sno's mother is a kindhearted woman who helps Son Goku recover after he nearly freezes to death in the snow. She worries about him going off to attack Muscle Tower, fearing that he'll be killed.

Arificial Human No. 8

Japanese VA: Shōzō Iizuka

A human-based artificial human created by Doctor Gero. Murasaki unleashes him as his secret weapon to defeat Goku, but the kindhearted No. 8 quickly befriends him instead. Goku nicknames him "Hatchan", a pun on hachi (Japanese for "eight"), and the honorific chan.

Jingle Village Mayor

Japanese VA: Ryūji Saikachi, Keiji Hirai (DB: Tenka'ichi Dai-Bōken)

He is the mayor of the Northern village where Sno lives. He is taken hostage by the Red Ribbon Army and imprisoned within Muscle Tower, but Goku storms the tower and frees him with the help of Artificial Human No. 8. The mayor takes a liking to No. 8, and adopts him as his own son.

Doctor Brief

Japanese VA: Jōji Yanami

Bulma's father, and the founder of Capsule Corporation. He invented the Hoi Poi Capsule, one of the series' most distinctive and iconic items. A brilliant but highly eccentric man, he lets stray animals roam free in his house, and has quite the porn collection.

Bulma's Mom

Japanese VA: Mariko Mukai (DB, Z 46-118), Yōko Kawanami (Z 124-246, Kai), Hiroko Emori (Z 140 & Z M8)

Bulma's eternally youthful and shut-eyed maternal unit. A major ditz, she drives her daughter crazy with inappropriate questions and attempts to hit on Bulma's male friends.

Upa

Japanese VA: Mitsuko Horie (DB), Masafumi Ōkura (Z 13), Naoko Watanabe (DBZ: Idainaru Son Gokū Densetsu)

Bora's young son, he is taken hostage by Captain Yellow in an attempt to get Bora to surrender. Luckily, Goku happens by and rescues him, and they quickly become friends. After Goku is defeated by Tao Pai-pai, Upa advises him to climb Karin Tower to get stronger. Upa later goes with Goku to Uranai Baba's palace, and teams up with Pu'er to defeat Dracula Man. After Bora is revived, Upa promises to try and live each day as bravely and energetically as Goku. Years later, he contributes his energy to the final Genki-Dama during the battle with Majin Buu, by at which point he is grown-up with a wife and child.

Bora

Japanese VA: Banjō Ginga (DB, Z 13), Hisao Egawa (Z 285)

The guardian of the Karin Holy Land, and Upa's father. He handily defeats all the Red Ribbon soldiers who invade the land in search of the Dragon Ball located there, but is effortlessly killed by Tao Pai-pai. Goku revives him with the Dragon Balls, making him the first person to be brought back to life like this. He later helps Yajirobe and Goku get to the top of Karin Tower, and contributes energy to Goku's final Genki-Dama against Majin Buu.

Before returning to the afterlife, Son Goku teaches Trunks and Son Goten the art of Fusion in order to defeat Majin Buu. After some trial and error the two eventually master the dance, and with their combined intellect they create numerous childish, yet somewhat effective techniques.

Gotan

Japanese VA: Masako Nozawa & Daisuke Gōri (Dragon Ball Z 2)

A hypothetical fusion Son Goku imagines between himself and Mister Satan as he frantically searches for someone else to fuse with after Majin Buu absorbs Son Gohan. Fortunately Vegeta shows up before Goku can make this fusion a reality, however the character was later brought to life in the "Dragon Ball Z 2" video game.

Vegetto

Japanese VA: Masako Nozawa & Ryō Horikawa

With no other warriors left on Earth, Son Goku pleads with Vegeta, who eventually agrees, to fuse with him before Majin Buu destroys the planet. It is quickly obvious that Vegetto embodies the cocky fighting attitude of the two Saiyans, and he makes it clear that there is no doubt his strength surpasses Majin Buu. However, Majin Buu takes advantage of his cockiness and absorbs Vegetto, breaking the permanent fusion.

Rabbit Gang Member

Japanese VA: Masaharu Satō

After seeing his comrade defeated and getting the Nyoi-Bō shoved up his butt by Goku, he calls "The Carrotizor" for help. Finally gaining the upper-hand, he is handily defeated once again by Yamcha. In the end, he is placed on the moon by Goku with his comrades.

Rabbit Gang Member

Japanese VA: Issei Futamata

Bulma tells Goku to beat up the gang members, since they're bad guys and they're flirting with her. After getting kicked around by both Goku and Yamcha, the now defeated Rabbit Gang must live out their lives pounding mochi on the moon.

Pilaf Gang

Japanese VA: Shigeru Chiba

Pilaf is a greedy, childish, midget-looking monster who shows up from time to time in Dragon Ball and always stirs up trouble of some sort. His goal is to rule the world and he comes close to realizing his dream several times, but his plans are always thwarted by Son Goku and co.

Shuu (Soba)

Japanese VA: Tesshō Genda

One of Pilaf's servants, Shuu dresses up in a ninja costume and aids Mai when she is given a task. He looks as tame as he fights, and he often ends up foiling Pilaf's plans of getting the Dragon Balls.

Mai

Japanese VA: Eiko Yamada

A servant of Pilaf, she serves him without question (unless Pilaf is going to do something very stupid, which happens often). She always works with Shuu and although she's pretty bright, they both always manage to screw up Pilaf's best laid plans.
