"Broly" is the first theatrical film of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super. The movie premiered at the Nippon Budōkan in Tokyo on 14 November 2018 and opened to the public in Japan on 14 December 2018. The film was written by Akira Toriyama and directed by Tatsuya Nagamine.

Synopsis

This is the story of a new Saiyan. Earth is peaceful following the Tournament of Power. Realizing that the universes still hold many more strong people yet to see, Son Goku spends all his days training to reach even greater heights. Then one day, Goku and Vegeta are faced by a Saiyan called "Broli" who they've never seen before. The Saiyans were supposed to have been almost completely wiped out in the destruction of Planet Vegeta, so what's this one doing on Earth? This encounter between three Saiyans who have followed completely different destinies turns into a stupendous battle, with even Freeza (back from Hell) getting caught up in the mix.[1][2]

Summary

41 years ago, on Planet Vegeta

King Cold arrives with his army to introduce his son Freeza to King Vegeta and the other Saiyans. Cold announces that he is retiring, and that Freeza will henceforth command the army in his stead; from now on all Saiyans must obey Freeza. To commemorate his inauguration, Freeza presents the Saiyans with the newly-invented "scouters", a more compact, wearable version of the "scout-scopes" the Saiyans have been using for reconnaissance up to now. Freeza demonstrates how to use the scouters by locating several hidden Saiyan snipers aiming their weapons at him, and wastes no time destroying them. With that, Freeza and co. leave behind 500 sets of this handy new item and depart.

Afterwards, King Vegeta checks in on the growth of his son in the incubation chamber. Proud of the prince's potential, King Vegeta boasts that his son shall rule the universe rather than Freeza. But the king is outraged when he sees an unknown child placed in a nearby special incubation capsule, even though this chamber is supposed to be reserved for the Saiyan elite. The Saiyan scientists explain that this is Broli, the son of Paragus, whose abnormally high potential may even surpass Prince Vegeta. Broli's power readings vary wildly, but even ignoring the data points which seem like flukes, his potential is undoubtedly high. Perhaps he could even become a legendary Super Saiyan

Sometime later, Paragus seeks an audience with King Vegeta, asking why his son Broli has been dispatched to a frontier world as if he were a low-level warrior. Even worse, Broli's destination is the small planet Vampa, said to be barren and lacking any civilization, and therefore unlikely to fetch a high price. While initially claiming the experience will help Broli develop into an even greater warrior, King Vegeta soon admits that Broli's potential is frankly too high; one might even call him a "mutant". If Broli becomes mentally unstable as he grows up, King Vegeta fears he may become a threat to the Saiyan army and even the universe itself. Frankly, the king thinks Paragus should be grateful that Broli is merely being exiled instead of killed outright.

Unconvinced, Paragus thinks King Vegeta is simply afraid that Broli will outshine his own son. While the king is angered by such insolence, it's too late anyway: Broli's pod has just now taken off for Planet Vampa. Paragus runs off and steals a spaceship to rescue Broli; a nearby non-combatant Saiyan named Beets tries to stop him but gets dragged along for the ride. Paragus explains to Beets about King Vegeta's scheme to kill Broli, and how he plans to rescue Broli and find another planet to live on. Beets can return to Planet Vegeta if he likes, but Paragus realizes that he and Broli will be killed if they go back now. Instead, Paragus vows to raise Broli into the ultimate warrior and avenge himself on King Vegeta!

Opening Credits

Paragus and Beets arrive on Planet Vampa, coming in for a rough landing since Paragus insists on heading straight to where Broli's pod should be. Disembarking, Paragus uses one of the now obsolete "scout-scopes" to track Broli down. The pair are almost immediately attacked by a horde of giant ticks but manage to escape. The next morning they resume their search, and Beets notices that the planet has a moon which happens to be nearly full at the moment. Paragus warns him not to stare at it too long or he'll become a Great Ape (it turns out Beets has never experienced this transformation before). They land on what seems to be a grassy field at the bottom of a crater, where the giant ticks gather to drink something from beneath the ground with their long suckers. The ground suddenly shakes and rises up into the air: the grassy field was really a gigantic, green-furred, serpentine beast with a face like an attack dog, which then begins eating the ticks.

Paragus realizes that the ticks suck the blood of these beasts, and the beasts in turn prey on the ticks in a symbiotic cycle. Beets (who finds this entire planet far too creepy) spots Broli's pod nearby, although Broli is no longer inside. They soon find him in a nearby cave amidst the remains of some ticks. Using the scout-scope, Beets sees that Broli's battle power is 920 (stronger than Beets himself) although Paragus knows 920 would not be enough to have defeated the ticks. Broli must have seen the full moon last night and killed the ticks as a Great Ape. Though they've found Broli safe and sound, unfortunately Beets discovers that the ship's main floater was damaged in the landing; it cannot be repaired, and they cannot even radio for help. Realizing that they're stranded on Planet Vampa, Paragus immediately shoots Beets to conserve food rations.

Five Years Later

Bardock returns to Planet Vegeta in response to a general order from Freeza for all Saiyans to assemble there. Already suspicious, Bardock tells his companion Leek to remove his scouter so that their conversation can't be overheard. They notice that Freeza's spaceship is already in orbit around the planet, even though there's still plenty of time before all the Saiyans will arrive. Bardock also wonders what the point of gathering everyone together is, since any important message could simply be sent via radio. He further speculates that while Freeza and his father Cold before him have found the Saiyans very useful up to now, Freeza's army has grown big enough that they can perhaps get by even without the at times troublesome Saiyans…

The two land in a rural Saiyan village and disembark. Leek can't believe Bardock's speculation about Freeza plotting to eradicate the Saiyans and instead agrees with another Saiyan, Taro, that Freeza has probably located a major planet that will require the cooperation of all Saiyans to subdue. However, Taro mentions how Freeza has been asking around about the legend of the Super Saiyan, and Bardock realizes with horror that this must be the real reason for Freeza's actions. Indeed, out in his spaceship Freeza and his aide Kikono discuss these legends of the "Super Saiyan" and "Super Saiyan God". While Freeza agrees that they are mostly likely mere legends, it can't hurt to be too careful. Now with all the Saiyans gathering on Planet Vegeta, it's the perfect opportunity to wipe them all out in one fell stroke.

Bardock returns home to his mate Gine, hard at work in her butcher shop. Gine catches him up to speed: their son Raditz has become a full-fledged warrior and is off on a team with Prince Vegeta (a troublesome partner, in Bardock's opinion), while their younger son Kakarrot is still in his incubation capsule in the back room, though he's just about ready to come out. They go see him; he's still small (a late bloomer, Gine says), but already looks just like his father, particularly his hair. Bardock suddenly announces that come nightfall they should steal a space pod and send Kakarrot off to some planet. With his low potential it's probably his eventual fate anyway, and Bardock thinks they should do it now while there's still time. Gine is reluctant at first but agrees once Bardock explains his fears about Freeza.

That night, Bardock and Gine put Kakarrot inside a space pod and take him out into the wastelands surrounding the village. Gine thinks all three of them should flee together, but Bardock says they would be tracked via scouter. Bardock has programmed Kakarrot's space pod for Earth, a distant world inhabited by a weak and primitive race which is unlikely to be targeted by Freeza's army any time soon. Gine assures Kakarrot that they will come get him as soon as it turns out Bardock's fears are unfounded, while Bardock tells him to survive no matter what. With that, they launch the pod into space.

Back at Freeza's spaceship, Kikono notes how destroying the Saiyans will cut the size of their army practically in half, but Freeza is sure they can manage regardless. Besides, it's only a matter of time before the Saiyans turn on him. Freeza exits his ship and fires a gigantic energy ball at Planet Vegeta. While down below Bardock defies Freeza with a blast of his own, he is instantly overwhelmed as the ball crashes into the planet, destroying it completely. Freeza feels very refreshed as he nonchalantly watches all life-signs from the planet vanish from his scouter display.

On another planet, Prince Vegeta, Raditz, Nappa, and two other Saiyans have finished subduing the natives when they receive word from Freeza's army that Planet Vegeta has been destroyed by a meteorite impact. While Raditz is happy they were lucky enough to be offworld during the disaster, Prince Vegeta is annoyed to realize he will now never become king. Asked by Nappa about his younger brother, Vegeta isn't sure whatever happened to him, but isn't too interested either. Raditz is dismissive of his own younger brother, a low-level warrior confined to an incubation capsule, although Raditz had heard from his mother about how they launched him into space. On Planet Vampa, Broli is still alive and well and eating more ticks. He looks up as Kakarrot's pod zips through space on its way to Earth. The scene flashes forward from Age 737 to the present day, showing highlights from Goku's growth and adventures along the way.

Present Day

In the present, Goku and Vegeta are sparring at Bulma's tropical summer house, while Bulma looks after Bra, Whis helps himself to some tasty food and Beerus naps. This summer house is located on an otherwise uninhabited island 1,600 kilometers south of West City, which allows Goku and Vegeta to cut loose. However, their fighting is so loud that it wakes up Beerus, who shouts at them to keep it down.

While Goku and Vegeta take a break, Whis asks Goku why he's still so intent on growing even stronger. Is he trying to become the next God of Destruction? Goku denies having any interest in the position (which Beerus takes slight offense at). Rather, the Tournament of Power showed him that there are still plenty of strong warriors in the other universes, and now he's all fired up. Whis next asks Vegeta his reasons for seeking to improve, and Vegeta angrily says it's because of Freeza. Although Freeza may have helped save Universe 7 in the Tournament of Power, Vegeta is certain he was thinking only of himself, and won't show any gratitude for being resurrected. Instead, he's certain to grow even stronger and come to try and defeat them again.

Vegeta blames Goku for all this and repeatedly calls him an idiot, when suddenly Bulma's wristwatch phone rings with a call from Trunks. He tells her thieves have broken into her Capsule Corporation laboratory and stolen the six Dragon Balls she had gathered as well as the Dragon Radar (Vegeta chides Bulma on needing a better security code). What's worse, the security footage reveals the perpetrators were a pair of soldiers from Freeza's army. Vegeta realizes that Freeza must have sent low-level goons so that nobody would sense their ki. Goku wonders what Freeza's wish might be; it can't be anything that surpasses Shenlong's power, so wishing to be the strongest in the universe won't work. Vegeta thinks Freeza will obviously wish for immortality, since with eternal life he'll eventually manage to kill them sooner or later.

Fortunately, Bulma says there's still one Dragon Ball remaining, out on the Ice Continent. She invites Goku and Vegeta along, and Whis is eager to come too. Beerus however insists on staying behind, since there probably won't be anything tasty there, so Bulma happily leaves him behind to take care of Bra in her absence. As Bulma flies the plane over to the Ice Continent, Goku asks why she's gathering the Dragon Balls, and she reluctantly admits it's to become five years younger. Goku thinks this is stupid and even Whis is curious why Bulma doesn't wish to take more years off, but Bulma says any younger than that would look suspicious. Goku laughs and accuses Bulma of having already used the Dragon Balls for this purpose before; Bulma accelerates their ship in anger, sending Goku flying into a pile of luggage at the back of the ship, which makes him laugh even harder.

Out on Freeza's spaceship, Kikono informs him that they already have the six Dragon Balls Vegeta's wife gathered and are now using her Dragon Radar to track down the seventh. Freeza is pleased at the news, but insists they not head for Earth until all seven are gathered. After all, even without scouters the Saiyans on Earth can sense high battle powers. Kikono asks what Freeza will use the Dragon Balls to wish for; perhaps immortality, like he tried before? Freeza though says that when he was in Earth's Hell he learned how terrible it is to be unable to move; he therefore thinks there's little point in not dying if he's left paralyzed. Kikono then suggests he wish to be impervious to damage, but Freeza thinks this would not be very interesting.

Kikono is left stumped, but Freeza's other aide Beriblu correctly guesses that Freeza's wish is to be taller. After all, she's seen him wipe out countless soldiers simply for calling him short. Specifically, Freeza says he wants to be 5 centimeters taller, though he makes Kikono promise not to tell anyone about this. Kikono points out that Freeza's second form is quite tall; why not just use that form? But Freeza is dead-set on being taller in his final form. And why only 5 centimeters? Freeza explains that it would seem too unnatural if he suddenly got huge; he wants to make it seem like he's still growing.

Meanwhile, a small Freeza Force spaceship flies through a remote area of space, crewed by the veteran Lemo and new recruit Cheelye. Cheelye complains that they'll never find any strong fighters out here, but Lemo says they don't have a choice: their orders are to find as many warriors as they can to rebuild Freeza's army. Cheelye wonders why this is necessary, since they used to have plenty of soldiers, but Lemo says rumor has it Freeza wiped them all out himself. Lemo asks Cheelye why she joined Freeza's army, and she says it was because she got caught stealing a Galactic Patrol ship; she figured if she joined Freeza the law couldn't touch her. Cheelye notes that Lemo has been in the army a long time, and asks if he's ever met Freeza, but Lemo says he's not a fighter, so he's only ever briefly glimpsed Freeza back at the station. Cheelye says that Freeza is supposed to be very short, but Lemo shouts at her never to say that again unless she's got a death wish.

Suddenly the ship picks up a distress signal on a nearby planet; it seems to be coming from an older model of Freeza Force spaceship. Maybe they can get a special bonus if they save whoever it is! They touch down on the Planet Vampa and investigate Paragus' rusted ship. Seeing them, the now old and grey Paragus desperately runs up and asks if they're part of Freeza's army. Lemo can tell from his tail that Paragus is a Saiyan (Cheelye seems unfamiliar with the word), and Paragus explains how he has been stranded here ever since his ship wrecked. Using her scouter, Cheelye is surprised to see that the seemingly decrepit Paragus has a battle power of 4,200. The group is attacked by one of the ticks, but Paragus calls for Broli, who rushes to the scene and defeats the monster.

Now a full-grown man sporting a distinctive green fur pelt around his waist, Broli's battle power cannot even be measured by Cheelye and Lemo's scouters, much to their shock. The pair think Freeza will be thrilled with these new recruits, and spirit Paragus and Broli away in their ship. Onboard, Cheelye offers Broli a snack bar, which he tries to eat without even unwrapping it first. Unused to anything tastier than ticks, Broli greedily gobbles up the bar, and Paragus has to tell him to say "thank you". Cheelye helps make up for Broli's lack of social niceties by teaching him a more casual way of saying "thanks", which he clumsily copies.

On Freeza's ship, Paragus introduces himself and his son to Freeza. Freeza notices that Broli has no tail, despite being a Saiyan, and Paragus explains that he removed it since otherwise Broli would lose control of himself and become a Great Ape. Freeza asks if Broli has ever lost control of himself since his tail's removal, and Paragus assures him "only rarely"…though Freeza points out this still means it happens sometimes. Paragus further reassures Freeza by showing him a remote control for the collar around Broli's neck; if Broli ever goes out of control, the collar incapacitates him with a powerful electric current. Broli is disturbed just at the sight of the remote and he pulls at the collar as if trying to remove it.

Freeza asks Broli what his name is, but Broli (still unaccustomed to society) simply ignores him, leaving Paragus to hurriedly supply this information. Freeza can tell that Broli hides great power within him, and Paragus vows that they will serve Freeza well. For this unexpected bounty, Freeza has Beriblu present Cheelye and Lemo with a large sum of reward money, a currency in the form of metal sticks. While Cheelye and Lemo take their leave, Paragus says that he heard about Planet Vegeta's destruction on the way over. Paragus isn't too concerned about that, except that it means his dreams for revenge will go unfulfilled. However, Freeza informs him that King Vegeta's son, Vegeta IV, is still alive and well. Furious, Paragus' desire for vengeance is rekindled, and Freeza promises to help him get his revenge. He tells Beriblu to give Paragus and Broli new battle clothes once they've showered. As Freeza is left alone, he says to himself that there's no need to personally fight this time.

Now showered and in their new clothes, Broli and Paragus are greeted by Cheelye and Lemo out in the ship's cafeteria. As they join them at their table, Cheelye wonders why Broli hasn't put on a battle jacket over his bodysuit. Broli thinks the armor will make it hard for him to move, but Cheelye demonstrates that the flexible armor doesn't get in the way at all. Cheelye thinks Broli should ditch his stinkky fur pelt, but when she reaches for it, Broli furiously refuses to take it off, shocking the entire cafeteria with his outburst. Cheelye realizes the pelt must be very important to him, but when he starts to explain, Paragus cuts him off, saying that they came here to eat, not talk. Cheelye protests, but Paragus tells her to mind her own business.

A large soldier named Daigen comes up and insists Cheelye would have more fun hanging out with him than Lemo or Broli. Cheelye refuses, but Daigen won't take no for an answer. Lemo tries to defuse the situation by offering to pay for Daigen's meal but gets shoved aside. Angered, Broli steps forward despite Paragus' orders and lifts Daigen up by the throat. Paragus uses his remote to activate Broli's shock collar, and he keels to the floor in pain. Cheelye confronts Paragus on this cruel treatment of his own son, but he is unmoved…however, Cheelye does manage to swipe the remote control without him noticing.

Beriblu comes in and tells Paragus that Freeza wishes to meet with him again; Paragus calls for Broli to come along, but Beriblu insists that they just need Paragus. Once Paragus leaves, Lemo says Paragus might even be worse than his own dad. Cheelye happily shows Broli the remote control she stole, which she then proceeds to crush underfoot. In the soldiers' barracks, Broli chows down on more rations, while Cheelye thanks him for helping them out back in the cafeteria. Lemo demonstrates to Broli how to open a canteen, and Broli is shocked at how delicious ordinary water is; apparently he's never had it before.

With Paragus no longer around to stop him, Broli explains that his fur pelt is actually the ear of Bah, his first (and until now only) friend. Bah was one of the giant beasts inhabiting Planet Vampa, even bigger than the ship they're on now, and Broli named him "Bah" after the cry he made. As a child, Broli used to train by dodging Bah's attacks every day, until eventually Bah became friendly with him. However, being on friendly terms with Bah meant they were no longer training, so an angry Paragus shot Bah's ear off with a gun. After that Bah was never friendly with Broli again, so he made Bah's severed ear into a pelt in order for them to always be together. Cheelye is surprised to hear Broli talk so much, and Lemo is impressed by his purity. The two question whether Broli even enjoys fighting, and think that Paragus is simply using him as a weapon to gain his revenge, but Broli refuses to say anything bad about his father.

On Earth, Freeza's henchmen locate the final Dragon Ball, while out in space Freeza tells Paragus about how Vegeta is on Earth, along with another Saiyan; Paragus should show them both Broli's power. Freeza says Paragus may do whatever he likes with Vegeta, but insists he personally finish off Goku, since killing Goku has long been his dream. Paragus is slightly unnerved at Freeza's vehemence on this point, but readily agrees. Kikono rushes in and informs Freeza that the final Dragon Ball has been found, and Freeza happily sets course for Earth. At the same time, Bulma and co. locate Freeza's Dragon Ball-stealing henchmen and go to confront them. While Bulma, Goku, and Vegeta all wear arctic clothes to protect them from the cold, Bulma is impressed that Whis is fine in his normal outfit (he explains that outer space is even colder than this).

Freeza's henchmen try and make a getaway in their ship when they see that the Saiyans have found them, but Vegeta shoots their ship down and Goku bangs on their window, demanding the Dragon Ball back. At this point Freeza's ship reaches Earth's atmosphere, and Freeza fires a blast to signal his arrival. Goku can sense there's someone else with Freeza…someone incredible. Freeza's ship touches down and as everyone disembarks, Vegeta recognizes Broli and Paragus as Saiyans, while Paragus in turn quickly sees that Vegeta is King Vegeta's son. Freeza telekinetically takes the Dragon Balls from his henchmen, while Cheelye and Lemo (watching from inside the ship) wonder what those orbs are; they'll have to ask someone about them.

Bulma demands Freeza return the Dragon Balls, but Whis says this is no time for that: instead, it's a warrior race get-together! Freeza introduces his two new recruits, saying that they too are Saiyans, banished to an inhospitable planet by Vegeta's father when Vegeta was still a child, where they've been stranded ever since. Hearing this, Goku has just one question: what does "inhospitable" mean? Annoyed, Freeza explains this means a harsh environment. Paragus says he's come to get his revenge, though Vegeta hardly cares. Since Broli is growing increasingly restless, Freeza decides it's time to witness his power firsthand. With that, Paragus orders Broli to attack.

Broli charges Vegeta, who at first has no trouble running circles around him in his base form. However, as they continue to trade blows, Vegeta sees that Broli is learning how to fight as they battle. Observing the fight, Paragus can tell that Vegeta has trained significantly, and Freeza confirms that Vegeta has seen his fair share of combat. Freeza points out that growing up on a deserted planet means that this is Broli's first time fighting an actual person, and while Paragus says he sparred with Broli in simulated battles, Freeza thinks Paragus is far too weak to have made for an effective training partner. As the fight grows tougher for Vegeta, he angrily transforms into a Super Saiyan. Paragus has never seen anything like this before, and Freeza asks if that means Broli can't become a Super Saiyan himself. Paragus can't believe it: so this is the Super Saiyan of legend?

Super Saiyan Vegeta overwhelms Broli at first, but not for long, and Vegeta is shocked at the speed of Broli's growth. Goku is likewise amazed to see Broli holding his own. Vegeta responds by taking it up a notch and goes Super Saiyan God. Now Vegeta firmly has the upper hand once more, and Paragus despairs that Broli has reached his limit; he never imagined Vegeta could have grown so strong. Freeza nonchalantly says they'll just have to call it quits for today, and starts heading back to his ship with the Dragon Balls. Paragus yells for Broli to return, but Broli refuses to listen and is on the brink of losing control of himself once more. Paragus reaches for his remote, only to discover it's gone. Broli continues to ignore Paragus' orders to retreat, while Vegeta fires a blast to finish him off.

The blast knocks Broli deep underwater as the ice around him melts, but a new power is triggered within him, and he rises up out of a whirlpool. Realizing this isn't a game anymore, Vegeta asks Goku if he brought any senzu, but Goku doesn't have any. Broli fires an impressive blast that just barely misses Goku and Vegeta, and Vegeta rushes in to attack, only to find that his punches no longer have any effect. Delighted, Freeza asks Paragus what's happened to Broli, and Paragus says Broli has apparently become able to wield the power of the Great Ape while still in human form, unburdened by the Great Ape's sluggish body. Unfortunately, this also means Broli is now uncontrollable. Just as Broli has Vegeta on the ropes, Goku steps in saying Broli should fight him now.

Broli braces himself for further combat while Goku hops around a bit to warm up. The two charge each other, but Goku is overwhelmed before too long and transforms into his Super Saiyan form, then his Super Saiyan God form soon after. Goku uses his Super Saiyan God ki to surround Broli, immobilizing him long enough for a short chat. (This technique is called "God Bind" in games including Dokkan Battle.) Goku explains that he and Vegeta now live peacefully here on Earth, though much happened along the way. He can tell that Broli isn't actually a bad guy, and shouldn't let evil people tell him what to do. Angered, Broli breaks through the ki barrier and attacks Goku, who slams him down to the ground. The impact shatters the surrounding ice, setting off a chain reaction throughout the entire area as the mountains of ice begin to crumble.

With the ground beneath their spaceship now unstable, Kikono takes the Dragon Balls and flies the ship to a safe distance, allowing Freeza and Paragus to watch the fight worry-free. With their aerial view from the ship, Cheelye can't believe how incredible Broli is, but Lemo thinks this isn't the real him. Cheelye agrees that this is all the result of Paragus bending the gentle Broli to his will. Paragus meanwhile is terrified that Broli will end up killing him. Indeed, Goku seems to be finished, and Freeza notes that he won't get a chance to fight this time. At this point Piccolo, meditating in some faraway green mountains, telepathically contacts Goku. He senses that Goku's in the middle of a fight against some fearsome opponent, but can also tell he would only get in the way if he went to help. In fact, Goku specifically asks Piccolo to stay away, so that if things get really bad he can escape by teleporting over to him. Piccolo realizes Goku must be up against quite an opponent to say something like that.

Returning to his feet after this little talk, Goku finally transforms into Super Saiyan Blue and recommences the battle. Their fight now takes them into the lava-filled caves beneath the ice, where Goku decisively gains the upper hand. When Paragus believes that Broli has truly reached his limit this time, Freeza is struck by a sudden flash of inspiration: he shoots Paragus through the heart and tells Broli that his father has been killed, hoping to trigger a Super Saiyan transformation in the same way that Kuririn's death did for Goku. Just as Freeza hoped, Broli is overcome with emotion and erupts into a new Super Saiyan form as his energy lights up the whole area. Broli rains down countless energy blasts upon Goku, who struggles to dodge or block them all. Freeza is pleased at the look of desperation on Goku's face; this is what he's been waiting for!

Vegeta joins Goku, telling him this isn't an opponent to fight one-on-one, and Goku reluctantly agrees. Vegeta now also goes Super Saiyan Blue and the two tag-team Broli, yet even their Kamehameha-Gallick Gun combination attack doesn't do the trick. They fly towards Freeza, who Broli begins attacking in his blind rage. Goku takes this opportunity to teleport himself and Vegeta over to Piccolo, where they collapse on the ground and revert to their base forms (while Vegeta angrily tells Goku to let go of his hand). Goku promises to tell Piccolo the whole story later, but for now does he have any senzu? Piccolo doesn't, so Goku next asks if Vegeta knows about the Fusion Dance. Vegeta has indeed heard about it from Trunks…it's that technique where you merge together by moving around like an idiot!

Vegeta hates this idea, but Goku points out it'll only be for thirty minutes; besides, they've fused before with the Potara. Since they don't have any Potara now, the only way for them to beat Broli is to use the Fusion Dance instead. Vegeta can just about accept the idea of fusing if there's no other option, but he can't stand the thought of doing those stupid dance poses. While Goku objects that otherwise the Earth will be destroyed, Vegeta says that's just fate. Goku asks if Vegeta is fine with his beloved Bulma dying, and while Vegeta tells him not to say such embarrassing stuff, he finally agrees to let Goku teach him the Fusion Dance.

Back on the battlefield, Broli continues to beat up on Freeza, who finally unleashes his Golden form. Goku and Piccolo meanwhile demonstrate the full Fusion Dance routine for Vegeta, who thinks he might prefer to die after all. Still, he goes along with it, though the two misalign their fingers on the first attempt and merge into an obese form. They must wait thirty minutes to defuse, while Broli goes right on pummeling Golden Freeza. Goku and Vegeta's second attempt likewise goes awry when they get the angles wrong, resulting this time in an extremely skinny merged form.

Thirty more minutes of Freeza-bashing later, Goku and Vegeta's third attempt is the charm, and they finally combine into a muscular, properly-proportioned warrior. Piccolo tells the Goku-Vegeta fusion to get going, though he wonders what name to call him. The fusion notes that he was called "Vegetto" when he merged with the Potara, and pauses while he tries to think up something different. Piccolo loses patience and tells him to just get going, but the fusion insists that it will be cooler if he has a name. After another moment's thought, he finally has it: Gogeta! With that, the newly-christened Gogeta teleports off to face Broli.

In the volcanic region, though defeated Freeza can't help but admire Broli's marvelous battle power. Gogeta arrives and explains to Freeza that he's the fusion of Goku and Vegeta, a power-up which goes far beyond simply adding their strength together. Freeza calls this cowardly, which Gogeta finds pretty rich coming from him. Meanwhile, Whis keeps Broli occupied by easily dodging his attacks. Gogeta teleports in and tells Whis to leave the rest to him. Whis is surprised to see that Goku and Vegeta are capable of merging together, while Bulma realizes this must be the Fusion Dance. Gogeta goads Broli into attacking him, and the fight begins.

Gogeta briefly tangos with Broli in his base form before powering up into Super Saiyan. As they trade blows, Gogeta proves more than a match, quickly knocking Broli to the ground below and showering him with ki blasts. Gogeta next fires a Kamehameha, and when Broli fires back with a blast of his own, the resulting clash seems to shatter reality around them, transporting them both to what appears to be an alternate dimension of vibrant colors. Here Broli bulks up into his incredibly muscular full-power Super Saiyan form, while Gogeta becomes Super Saiyan Blue. Together they smash up the surreal landscape until another clash of their powers returns them to normal reality.

Over on Freeza's spaceship nearby, Cheelye and Lemo dash through the hallway with the Dragon Balls in tow. Lemo thinks that Broli is bound to get killed at this rate, and Cheelye says he's not fighting because he wants to: at heart he is really a pure and gentle Saiyan, but his father turned him into a fighting machine. They can't let him die! Sure enough, on the battlefield Gogeta seems to have Broli on the ropes. When Broli vomits out flames that engulf the entire area, Gogeta simply runs through them and throws a series of ki blasts Broli's way, finishing off with a powerful rainbow-colored ball of energy.

As Broli disappears in the resulting explosion, Gogeta is surprised to see Shenlong materialize overhead. While Shenlong says he shall grant any one wish, Cheelye holds Kikono at gunpoint and asks how they can get their wish granted. Kikono admits that she merely has to speak her wish aloud, so Cheelye begins doing just that. At that moment, Broli emerges from the smoke and furiously attacks Gogeta once more. The fight seems increasingly one-sided though, with Broli no longer able to get a blow in edgewise. Gogeta knocks Broli into the air above him and envelops him in energy, setting off an enormous explosion. Whis watches the mushroom cloud from a distance, thoroughly impressed, and thinks that Gogeta might have this one in the bag.

While Broli stumbles helplessly, Gogeta fires off a Kamehameha to finish him off. Just before it hits though, Cheelye manages to speak her wish, sending Broli back to the planet where they found him. Broli is zapped to Planet Vampa, back in his base form and thoroughly confused. With the wish granted, Shenlong vanishes and the Dragon Balls scatter. Lemo steals a small Freeza Force spaceship and takes off with Cheelye. Seeing them depart, Freeza tries to shoot their ship down, but is stopped by Gogeta. Freeza reverts from his golden form and departs, promising to return.

Back at Bulma's summer home, Beerus (still hanging out with Bra) can tell that the others have managed to handle things on their own. Having successfully escaped into space, Cheelye apologizes for getting Lemo mixed up in all this, though he replies that this is the most fun he's ever had since joining the army. Cheelye says she wants to go back to Broli's planet, and Lemo is happy to go along; after all, he'll be in danger no matter where he goes, so sticking with the super-strong Broli is probably his safest best. Cheelye thinks they'll have to go get some food on the way over though.

Three Days Later

Freeza's fleet is off attacking a new planet. On the deck of Freeza's personal spaceship, Kikono informs Freeza that Cheelye and Lemo are with Broli. Freeza decides to leave them alone for the time being. That way, they can let those two handle the job of getting Broli's emotions under control; if he's able to utilize his incredible power without losing control of himself, he can be their mightiest soldier. Freeza realizes that no matter how much he himself might work hard to become stronger, he's just one person, and so will always be at a disadvantage against Goku and Vegeta. That's why he wants an ally of his own.

In his cave on Planet Vampa, Broli offers Cheelye and Lemo some tick innards, but Cheelye finds it bitter. Lemo doesn't like it any better, and Cheelye berates him for not bringing enough food supplies. Goku suddenly teleports in and greets Broli; he's confused at first to see Cheelye and Lemo there too, before remembering them as the Freeza soldiers who used the Dragon Balls. The two likewise recognize him as one of the Saiyans from Earth and are naturally suspicious, but he assures them he hasn't come here to fight. Rather, he heard Broli's planet was a pretty terrible place, so he brought Broli some supplies along. He tosses out a capsule house he got from Bulma, full of water, food, and other goodies; Cheelye and Lemo are amazed when they look inside. Goku also presents them with two senzu and explains how they heal injuries and restore stamina.

Cheelye still wonders what Goku is up to, but he says he simply wants Broli to keep alive and well. After all, Goku was fully confident in his strength, yet Broli proved far stronger. In fact, Goku thinks Broli is probably even stronger than Beerus, despite Beerus being a god and Broli just being another Saiyan like him. With that in mind, it would be a waste to let someone as incredible as Broli die. Goku bids Broli and co. goodbye and wishes them well. Lemo wonders how Goku came here without a spaceship, and Goku explains he teleported there by searching for Broli's ki (which simply confuses Cheelye even more).

While Goku cheerfully says he'll be back, Cheelye points out that despite cutting ties with Freeza's army, they're still Goku's enemies too, not his friends. Goku doesn't care either way though, so long as they let him stop by every now and then to fight Broli. Cheelye thinks Goku is completely insane, though she still thanks him for all the gifts. Lemo says they might not be here when Goku comes back, but Goku explains he'll always be able to find them so long as they don't go too far away. As Goku walks off, Cheelye finally asks him his name: "Son Goku…or Kakarrot!"

Setting

Variations

Below is a list of significant differences between the original dialogue and FUNimation English dub, with occasional comments on other dubs. Some differences are more significant than others; the inclusion of a difference in this list does not constitute any judgment about the appropriateness of its localization.

Prologue

  • When King Cold announces his retirement and the ascension of Freeza, King Vegeta says "Does that mean..." in the English dub. In Japanese, he only makes a surprised noise.
  • In the English dub, Cold says that Freeza "has a short temper and is even more cold-hearted than I am." In Japanese, he says "Freeza is even more cruel than I am."
  • When Freeza greets the Saiyans, in the English dub he says "Hello, monkeys!" In Japanese, he says よろしく/yoroshiku ("best regards").
  • In Japanese, Freeza tells them: "I have high hopes for you Saiyans." In the English dub, he says "I have such high expectations for you. For your sake, I hope you live up to them."
  • When King Vegeta visits Prince Vegeta in the nursery, he says "You are truly gifted! That monster Freeza won't be the one to rule the universe...it shall be you! I can't wait to see you grow up!" In the English dub, he says "The latent battle power within you is astonishing! It is you who will rule the universe. That monster Freeza thinks the Saiyans will serve him without question, but he'll fall to us! I look forward to watching you grow into a vicious king."
  • When King Vegeta spots Broli, in Japanese he says "Who is this? What is he doing inside a special capsule? [...] What is the meaning of this? This incubation chamber is supposed to be for the future Saiyan elite!" In the English dub, he says "Who is this child? What is he doing in the same room as my son! [...] This nursery is reserved for exceptional children who will become Saiyan elites, not some low-ranking baby taken off the street. Explain yourselves!"
  • When Paragus accuses King Vegeta of exiling Broli due to jealousy, the king says "Hold your tongue, or I will have you put to death. In any case, it's is already too late. His pod has just launched." In the English dub, he says "Say another word, and I will have your tongue, then kill the both of you. Besides, you're too late; he's gone. I had the pod launched before you got here."
  • As Paragus pushes aside a technician in his way at the spaceport, in the English dub, the technician says "Hey, sir! This area is for authorized personnel only!" In Japanese, the technician only says "な-なに。。。!/N-Nani...!" ("W-What the...!").

Promotion

The movie was first announced as the twentieth Dragon Ball film on 16 December 2017 at a mountain stage event for Super Dragon Ball Heroes during Jump Festa 2018.[11] This announcement followed months of speculation beginning in earnest with a mysterious domain name registration out of Tokyo for "dragonball2018.com"[8] (this website was never used) and culminating in pointed questions directed to Dragon Ball Super producer Hiroyuki Sakurada and former series director Kimitoshi Chioka at Salón del Manga in Barcelona on 03 November 2017.

Initial announcement visual[18][19]

As summarized by Kanzenshuu at the time:

The interviewers ask point-blank about a "new movie" — making the assumption that one is happening, without one actually having been announced — to which the production team responds that they cannot announce whether there will be a new movie, and to please be patient. They do say that with regards to future developments in Dragon Ball Super, we will find out "soon" — then specifically say "at the end of the year" — but do not commit to it being a movie in any way. It is questioned whether the current arc is the last; the production team answers that the current arc will last until March, but Toriyama naturally has something in mind for the story of the Dragon World.
— 03 November 2017[10]

In conjunction with the Jump Festa 2018 event, the movie was announced on the Dragon Ball Official Site[18] and Toei Animation's website[19] with some limited information about Akira Toriyama's involvement and the nature of the story.

An important announcement from the mountain stage on the first day of "Jump Festa 2018"! The development of a new Dragon Ball movie, the momentous 20th film in the series. The Dragon Ball movies began at the Toei Manga Festival in 1986. They went on to produce numerous such beloved characters as "Coola", "Broli", "Bojack", and "Janenba".

After 2013 saw the premiere of the first film in 17 years, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (net gross 2.99 billion yen), the Dragon Ball world expanded even further with 2015's Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' (net gross 3.74 billion yen), leading to the TV anime Dragon Ball Super currently airing. As befits the 20th entry in a movie series that has continued to pursue even stronger characters and even more entertaining stories, this film is being diligently produced with the goal of having the greatest scale and quality of the series to date!

As was the case with the last movie, original author Akira Toriyama-sensei is in charge of the original work, script, and character designs, raising expectations even higher. It looks like he's already done more image illustrations than for any movie before, so we can’t wait for the film's debut in December 2018!

And the theme for this movie is "the strongest warrior race in the universe, the Saiyans!" From Battle of Gods onward, Goku and co. have achieved new evolutions such as Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue. And so, it seems that this film depicts the "origin" of Goku and co.'s strength, the strength of the Saiyans, who remain the strongest warrior race in the universe even after all sorts of powerful warriors from throughout the universe have dauntlessly appeared. Don’t take your eyes off the infinitely growing "Saiyans" or the infinitely evolving world of Dragon Ball!

"Dragon Ball 20th Movie Commemoration Project (provisional title)"
Original Author, Script, & Character Design: Akira Toriyama
Super-wide National Roadshow in December 2018[20]

On 19 January 2018, it was announced that a new Gegege no Kitarō series would be replacing Dragon Ball Super on FujiTV beginning on 1 April 2018.[13] On 12 March 2018, the film's initial key visual was revealed as a way of introducing animation supervisor and character designer Naohiro Shintani, who had been selected by audition to refresh the Dragon Ball image.[5][4] The staff list was accompanied by a message from Toriyama.

Original Author, Script, & Character Design: Akira Toriyama
Director: Tatsuya Nagamine
Animation Supervisor: Naohiro Shintani
Art Director: Kazuo Ogura
Son Goku: Masako Nozawa

The Dragon Ball Super movie this time will be the next story in the series currently airing on TV. It will be an episode after catching our breath from the climax of the Tournament of Power with the universe’s existence on the line; with content that will give a little better understanding about Freeza and the Saiyans, which I hadn’t properly depicted up till now; and leading to a mighty foe saved for the occasion, which I think has it shaping up to be a really enjoyable story.

As with 2013’s Battle of Gods and the last outing Resurrection "F", I’ve written the story myself, and I’ve had the privilege of drawing lots of design illustrations as well. The fact is, while I’m just as busy as ever, as long as I’m not doing a serial, I have plenty of free time to think about the animated version, which I was completely hands-off about before. (laughs) So please look forward to it!

Now then, the animated version on TV will be ending for the time being, but the very popular Dragon Ball Super comic drawn by Toyotarō (on sale now up through volume 5!) will keep on going as-is. I think there will also be story developments different from the TV show and the movie, so please look forward to that as well. I will be, too!

Teaser PV (Japanese) storyboarded by Tatsuya Nagamine[9] and animated by Ryō Ōnishi.

On 20 March 2018, five days before the broadcast of the Dragon Ball Super series finale, Bandai Namco hosted a live stream to promote the upcoming mobile game Dragon Ball Legends.[21] Fans who tuned in were treated to a surprise guest appearance from Shueisha's Dragon Ball Room director Akio Iyoku and Super producer Norihiro Hayashida, along with a screening of the film's first Promotional Video. It was a dramatic departure from the teaser PVs for Battle of Gods and Resurrection "F", serving as a showcase for the new animation-friendly designs, and fans quickly realized[7] that director Tatsuya Nagamine had tweeted a glimpse of his storyboard for the teaser on 16 October 2017.[9] Unlike the initial teaser PVs for the previous two films, Broly‘s teaser PV was ultimately incoporated into the final film almost in its entirety, serving as the kick-off point for "Kakarot vs Broly"—the soundtrack and the fight—which was primarily animated by the film's top-credited Key Animator Ryō Ōnishi.

During the Legends stream, Iyoku and Hayashida provided more detail about the plot, production, and release strategy, but their interpreter appears to have been working from a prepared script, so his "translations" often didn't match up with what Iyoku and Hayashida were actually saying.[11][15] In the following partial transcript, the Interpreter's words are more or less an accurate translation of their words; Iyoku and Hayashida's names are inserted when their words have been directly translated.

V-Jump May 2018 cover, released on 21 March 2018, providing the first look at Naohiro Shintani's Super Saiyan design for Goku.[22] Like all cover artwork, it was released as a textless wallpaper on Shueisha's V-Jump website.[23]
V-Jump May 2018 fold-out poster.[22]
Promotional poster shared by Toei Animation on Twitter on 15 April 2018.[24] The text is the tagline from the teaser PV: "Earth has Goku."

Interpreter: "These two here are here to talk about the upcoming Dragon Ball Super movie. The new upcoming Dragon Ball movie is actually the 20th of its installment, so that's really something that they're really going to be bragging about, too. And maybe some of you have already noticed, but there's Dragon Ball Super on the logo. Until now, all movies have either been Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z. Even "Resurrection 'F'" was not Dragon Ball Super, so you may notice a lot of difference in the upcoming movie. "

Iyoku: "The theme is…the strongest race in the universe, the Saiyans! It’s a story about them."
Interpreter: "And I’m pretty sure you guys are wondering what the movie is going to be about. Of course, the world famous and everybody’s favorite Saiyans will appear. And also some secret backgrounds might come into play about their race."

Iyoku: "It’s a story about the Saiyans, so perhaps Freeza will appear in the movie, and various things be revealed."
Interpreter: "And, you know, you can’t talk about the Saiyans without Freeza, the man who literally killed everybody except for two Saiyans."

Iyoku: "This time around Toriyama-sensei is again writing the story, and also drawing lots and lots of illustrations, including ones of the new characters."
Interpreter: "And also the script for this movie is currently being written by Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball himself, and also all the designs of the new characters, he’s still working on it."

Interpreter: "As I said, the movie is going to be basically a whole new experience of Dragon Ball, and this here is the new design of Goku that will be appearing in the new Dragon Ball Super movie. This new design of Goku, as you might have noticed, is really slim, or at least slimmer than usual, and the actual design has been renewed. They have not done that for over two decades or so, so this is going to be a really new experience for them as well, and the all sleek limbs, those are so that his action is a lot more emphasized in the movie. They've been working on this design, actually, for over a year. They started working on it last February, apparently, and they've been working with, of course, Akira Toriyama, and Mr. Iyoku here has gone through it, so lots of feedback's going back and through, and it took them a year to finalize this. [...] So this is the first time you've seen this Goku. [...] Who here wants to see him move right now? [...] We've shown this in Japan, this final design of Goku, but we've never shown anybody outside the company of Goku moving. So this is going to be a little present from these two here. It's a world premiere trailer of the upcoming Dragon Ball Super movie. First time shown; you guys are the first to see it. Apparently they've been working on this since last weekend, so it's really fresh. Alright so, here's the movie trailer."

Akio Iyoku: "So, how was it?"
Interpreter: "Hope you guys liked a glimpse of that right now."

Iyoku: "There were various scenes, but…"
Interpreter: "Yeah, and you guys might have seen another character actually besides Goku that he was fighting."

Iyoku: "He had kind of a green aura, like this. I wonder who he could be?"
Interpreter: "Pretty unique green aura that he had with a muscular figure."

Iyoku: "I said this earlier, but this story features Saiyans, so perhaps he’s a Saiyan too."
Interpreter: "I’m literally going to translate everything he says. He is kind of spoiling the movie for you guys, but that might be a Saiyan."

Iyoku: "That should get your imaginations going today. I think the story will be revealed in future, so look forward to it."
Interpreter: "So the movie will air in December, so we can’t give you everything right now, but we will keep you guys updated."

Norihiro Hayashida: "Continuing on from the previous movies, Battle of Gods and Resurrection ‘F’, this current movie will be released not only in Japan but overseas as well; we are coordinating that right now. In Japan it debuts at the end of the year, on December 14th, but we are currently coordinating things so that after its Japanese premier it will be able to debut in America and various countries overseas as soon as possible, so look forward to it."
Interpreter: "So the plan is the movie will be released on December 14th in Japan, but as Resurrection ‘F’ was an outstanding success worldwide, these guys want to make sure that everybody can watch the movie at the same time, even if you’re in Asia, even if you’re in North America, Europe, does not matter. They’re aiming to release it hopefully on a global scale at the same time.

Iyoku: "I think that with this movie this year, Dragon Ball is going to get more and more exciting."
Interpreter: "So, as you saw, the design is going to be reborn, Goku is going to have more action, and Dragon Ball in general is just going to have an all-new experience for everybody that is waiting for it."

Iyoku: "Today is a game announcement presentation, so [???], but after this there will of course be game announcements. I hope that the movie will successfully collaborate in that area too."
Interpreter: "And of course the presentation itself, you guys are here for the games right? Unfortunately they don’t have much time left, but they want to make sure to tell you guys the movie will definitely be collaborating with the games, so look forward to that as well."

Iyoku: "The upcoming games are amazing."
Interpreter: "And the games, yeah the game news is coming up in a bit, so just look forward to that too."

Iyoku: "I think the movie, the games, and the current Dragon Ball Super TV anime will get more and more exciting. So please look forward to what’s coming up."
Interpreter: "So animation is going on right [now]—Dragon Ball Super is still broadcasting right now. You guys should watch that too. It’s actually near the climax. Look forward to how it’s going to end. But the world of Dragon Ball is not going to end, so look forward to more contents coming up."

All three: "Thank you very much."
