Future Trunks is a fictional character in the Dragon Ball manga series by Akira Toriyama. Future Trunks makes his debut in chapter 330, published in the 1991 #29 issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump.
Biography
The son of Bulma and Vegeta, this version of Trunks grows up in a world without his father, who, alongside most of Earth's strongest fighters, gets killed by artificial humans created by Doctor Gero when Trunks is still an infant. Son Gohan survives, and helps Trunks with his training as he grows older. In the manga's series of events, Trunks is already a Super Saiyan while training with Gohan, whereas in the anime version, he struggles trying to attain the form. He joins Gohan in a battle against Artificial Humans No. 17 and No. 18, but they barely get out of it alive. Later, Gohan heads off to the battlefield again, knocking Trunks out to prevent him from coming along. By the time Trunks wakes up, Gohan has fallen. Upon finding his dead body in the anime version, Trunks transforms into a Super Saiyan. Three years later, he tries fighting the artificial humans again, to no avail. He resorts to using the time machine Bulma built, to deliver heart medicine to Son Goku twenty years in the past. Bulma believes that if Gohan's father had not succumbed to a heart virus, he could have made a difference against the artificial humans.[1][2]
Trunks intends to meet with Goku after he returns from outer space and defeats Freeza on Earth, but his expected arrival time is later than Trunks had counted on.[3] Freeza and his father arrive about three hours before Goku, so Trunks steps in to confront them himself.[4] Surprising them with his Super Saiyan transformation, Trunks easily kills them both.[5] Goku's friends are nearby and witness this, so Trunks makes contact with them and they wait for Goku to arrive.[6] He does not want to reveal his identity, as that might jeopardize his past self being born,[7] so the others are suspicious, especially Vegeta, whom Trunks is secretly excited to meet.[8] When Goku finally arrives, he and Trunks go off to talk one-on-one. Goku explains he was about to use his teleportation skill to get to Earth faster and beat Freeza, when he sensed Trunks stepping in. Trunks realizes he changed the course of history for no reason and wants to reveal the truth to Goku, but not before testing him. They both turn into Super Saiyans and Trunks attacks Goku with his sword, who blocks his strikes with just one finger. Satisfied that Goku lives up to his reputation, Trunks tells him he has come from the future.[3] He reveals his parents are Vegeta and Bulma, explains when and where Doctor Gero's artificial humans will attack first, and gives Goku the heart medicine. With that, Trunks departs, saying he will return to fight alongside Goku and the others if he survives until then.[7]
Recharging the time machine takes eight months[1], after which Trunks returns as promised[9] — and he is shocked to find two artificial humans that are different from the ones he knows. One of them turns out to be Doctor Gero himself, who retreats back to his laboratory to awaken No. 17 and No. 18.[10] Those two rebel against Gero and kill him, and awaken yet another artificial human, No. 16.[11] They easily defeat Trunks and the others, but do not kill them.[12] They make it their mission to find and kill Goku, though, who is alive in this timeline but bedridden with his heart disease.[13] His friends go through the process of evacuating him, during which Bulma discovers a second time machine, identical to the one Trunks has.[14] When Trunks investigates this moss-covered version, he learns it came from even further in the future, and arrived in the past a year before his own first trip.[15] The one who used it turns out to be a monster called Cell, another creation of Doctor Gero's, who seeks to absorb No. 17 and No. 18 in order to attain his "perfect" form.[16] Trunks goes to what remains of Doctor Gero's lab to destroy the Cell embryo that is growing there in the present timeline. Afterwards, he seeks out Vegeta, who is entertaining the idea of surpassing the Super Saiyan level. Trunks suggests that training together is more effective than doing it alone,[17] but his father stubbornly ignores him. Suddenly, Goku shows up, having recovered from his illness. He introduces Vegeta and Trunks to the Room of Spirit and Time, in which someone can spend a year while only one day passes on the outside.[18]
Vegeta succeeds in surpassing the Super Saiyan level within two months, but insists on spending a full year in the Room.[19] Trunks, meanwhile, discovers a Super Saiyan stage beyond the one Vegeta reached, but does not tell him in fear of hurting his father's pride.[20] Upon exiting the Room, they go fight Cell, who has absorbed No. 17 by this point.[19] Despite this power-up, Vegeta is still far stronger than him.[21] Knowing that Saiyans enjoy a challenge, Cell persuades Vegeta into letting him go so he can reach his "perfect" form.[22] Trunks tries to intervene, and even blasts Vegeta in the process, but cannot prevent Cell from absorbing No. 18.[23] Vegeta is no match for the "perfect" Cell and gets knocked unconscious, which is when Trunks decides to reveal his true power.[24] He attacks Cell with complete confidence, but having bulked up into such a muscular form, he lacks the speed to hit Cell even once.[25] Realizing he made a huge blunder and that Vegeta deliberately avoided this form, Trunks surrenders and resigns himself to death. Instead of killing him, however, Cell says he will hold a martial arts tournament where anyone can come challenge him.[26]
Trunks attends these so-called Cell Games,[27] where Goku fights Cell but ends up losing by forfeit.[28] He asks Gohan to fight instead,[29] saying his hidden power is the key to victory.[30] Cell is intrigued by this and intentionally tries to bring out that power by sending Cell Juniors after Gohan's friends.[31] Trunks can hold his own against the Cell Junior attacking him, but most of the others get beaten to near-death.[32] Eventually, Gohan explodes with rage and uses his emergent power to obliterate all the Cell Juniors.[33] Even Cell is no match for him, and he gets so desperate that he self-destructs, taking Goku down with him.[34] Everyone thinks it is over, but Cell regenerates and promptly kills Trunks with a blast through the chest.[35] A wish upon the Dragon Balls brings Trunks back to life,[36] and he learns that not only did Gohan defeat Cell, but Vegeta grew furious with emotion at Trunks' death. Pleasantly surprised to learn that his cold, distant father cares about him after all, Trunks departs for his own timeline,[37] now fully capable of destroying No. 17 and No. 18.[38] Roughly three years later, he kills the Cell of his timeline as well, and peace returns to his world.[39]
