Gods of Destruction are divine beings who are recruited from the ranks of mortals. One God of Destruction presides over each of the twelve universes, and each has an Angel serving as their attendant. Each God of Destruction is life-bound to their Kaiōshin; if one dies, so does the other.[2] The Gods of Destruction and their attendant Angels are named after alcoholic beverages.[3]
Iwen is the God of Destruction of Universe 1, attended by the AngelAwamo. His body conceals intense emotions which are contrary to his cuddly appearance.[4][5] Iwen's name is likely a rearrangement of the Japanese transliteration of "wine" (ワイン/wain), an alcoholic beverage made from fermented grapes.
Helles is the God of Destruction of Universe 2, attended by the AngelSouwa. A god in the form of a woman, she sings the praises of the magnificence of Universe 2's "Power of Love". She has an unusually high sense of aesthetics and hates ugly things.[6][7]Helles (ヘレス/Heresu) is a traditional German pale lager beer, produced chiefly in Southern Germany, particularly Munich. ヘレス is also the katakana transliteration of the Spanish word for Sherry (jerez), a fortified white wine made from grapes grown near Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia, Spain.
Mosco is a robot-like God of Destruction in Universe 3, attended by the AngelCamparri. It is said that Mosco has surpassed mortal intelligence, and that because he is an old robot and cannot speak, he communicates his intentions with electronic sound translated by Camparri.[8][9] However he is actually a mech operated by a small horned man named Mule.[10] Mosco's name is taken from Moscow Mule (モスコ・ミュール/Mosuko Myūru), a cocktail served in a copper mug and made with vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice. This pun was deduced by fans long before the reveal of Mule,[11] who is only named in the credits of Dragon Ball Super Episode 121, because the name pun follows the theme of Gods of Destruction and Angels being named after alcoholic beverages.
Quitela is the God of Destruction of Universe 4, attended by the AngelConic. He enjoys destroying on a whim. He specializes in cowardly tricks, such as sending spies to other universes.[12] Quitela's name is adapted from the transliteration of tequila (テキーラ/tekiira), a distilled beverage made from the blue agave plant specific to Jalisco, Mexico.
Arak is the God of Destruction of Universe 5, attended by the AngelKucatail. He tries to expand his universe's potential through the smallest possible amount of destruction by thoroughly investigating what he should target.[13] Arak's name likely derives from Arak (アラック/arakku), a traditional Middle Eastern anise-flavored beverage distilled from grapes and grapevines. It should be noted that in some instances, Arak is also written in katakana as アラク, the same as the character’s name.
Champa is the God of Destruction of Universe 6, attended by the AngelVados. Champa's brother Beerus is the God of Destruction in Universe 7, attended by Vados's brother Whis. Champa's name is derived from Champagne (シャンパン/Shanpan), a sparkling wine produced from grapes grown in the Champagne region of France.
Beerus is the God of Destruction of Universe 7 and he is attended by the AngelWhis. Beerus's twin brother Champa holds the same position in Universe 6 and is attended by Whis's sister Vados. Beerus's name was originally adapted from the Japanese transliteration of the German pronunciation of Virus (ビールス/Biirusu). In the original script for Battle of Gods, Yūsuke Watanabe had imagined Beerus as the God of Destruction responsible for infecting the Saiyans with evil.[14][15] When Akira Toriyama revised the script, he thought that the pun was on the German word Bier (also ビールス), so he named Beerus's attendant Whis after "whiskey".[16] This accident served to establish the theme of Gods of Destruction and Angels being named after alcoholic beverages.
Liquir is the God of Destruction of Universe 8, attended by the AngelKorn. Liquir lives to fix defects in his KaiōshinIl's plans, and strictly destroys anyone who lowers their universe's level by not admitting to defects in plans.[17] Liquir's name is likely derived from "liqueur" (リキュール/Rikyūru), a term referring to any beverage made from a distilled spirit that has been flavored and bottled with additional sweetener.
Sidra is the God of Destruction of Universe 9, attended by the AngelMohito. Sidra is indecisive and normally cannot bring himself to destroy anything, often suffering from depression due to his responsibilities,[18] but he destroyed an entire planet of people who rioted in fear of the destruction of their universe.[19] Sidra's name comes directly from the katakana spelling of the Spanish word for "cider", shidra (シドラ/shidora). The word used to refer to alcoholic "cider" in Japanese is "cidre" (シードル/shīdoru). Cider is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermented juice of apples.
Rumoosh is the God of Destruction of Universe 10, attended by the AngelKusu. Rumoosh is a relatively lazy God of Destruction who doesn't like to destroy planets because he finds it to be too much trouble. He likes people who fawn over him for being a God of Destruction.[20] Rumoosh is likely derived from "rum" (ラム酒/ramushu), a distilled alcoholic beverage made from sugarcane byproducts.
Vermoud is the God of Destruction of Universe 11, attended by the AngelMarcarita. Vermoud has a strong sense of justice and never forgives evil. He gets fired up about the Pride Troopers' efforts to punish evils in Universe 11.[21][22] Vermoud's name is likely derived from vermouth (ベルモット/berumotto), an aromatized, fortified wine flavored with various botanicals. The character name adds a diacritic sign to the last syllable of the katakana used to write "vermouth" in Japanese, altering its pronunciation from "to" to "do".
Giin is the God of Destruction of Universe 12, attended by the AngelMartine. Giin carries out the minimum necessary destruction mercilessly but without discrimination. Before the Tournament of Power, he had grown bored because he was running out of things to destroy.[23] Giin's name is likely adapted from "gin" (ジン/jin), a juniper-flavored spirit made by either redistilling ethanol of agricultural origin or adding approved natural flavoring to a neutral spirit of agricultural origin. The character name adds a vowel elongation to the first syllable of the katakana used to write "gin" in Japanese.
