“Dragon Ball Super” Twitter Countdown: 1 Day

The official Twitter account for Dragon Ball Super has started a daily countdown leading up to the series’ debut 05 July 2015. With one day to go until the premiere, a series of posts sum up the excitement:

いよいよ明日朝9時！「ドラゴンボール超」放送開始まであと1日！一部地域を除き、放送中にデータ放送でカードバトルにチャレンジも出来ます！プレゼントもあるのでリアルタイムで是非！(S)

At last, tomorrow morning at 9! There’s one day until broadcast begins! Apart from some areas, you’ll be able to give card battle a try through the data broadcast! There are prizes too, so by all means, check it out in real-time! (S)

“Data broadcast” refers to the data channel that is broadcast along the program itself in Japanese digital terrestrial TV, accessible via the “d” button on the remote control. It can contain program information, interactive content such as live quizzes, and even playable games, as it will here.

The twitter account later followed up this post with a brief summary of the episode:

Finally, the account delivers something that has been hinted at, but not stated outright until now: Akira Toriyama’s involvement in choosing the series title:

Come to think of it… although we haven’t used it as a topic yet, the title Dragon Ball Super is, of course, Toriyama-sensei‘s! When we saw these letters on the cover of the thick plot Sensei gave us, we got super-excited! There should be some super things waiting for us. By all means, please watch it tomorrow! (S)

Today’s entry, with two days to go until the premiere, shares a link to a video of the “Complete Showcase Event” held earlier this week, where details of the upcoming TV series’ plot were divulged:

It was only just this week that the 2015 #31 issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump in Japan revealed the title of Dragon Ball Super Episode 1:

While the title of the first episode lines up with material seen in the manga adaptation’s first chapter, the second episode’s title hints at all-new adventures.

UPDATE: A glimpse of what appears to be content from the upcoming issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump provides a standard, two-part episode title, and is likely the complete title:

約束のリゾートへ！ベジータが家族旅行！？
Yakusoku no Rizōto e! Bejīta ga Kazoku Ryokō!?

Today’s entry, with three days to go until the premiere, shares a sigh of relief over wrapping up yesterday’s “Complete Showcase Event” while also apologizing to those that may be unable to catch the show right away:

Europe Receiving Custom “Extreme Butōden” Nintendo 3DS Package

The official Dragon Ball Z video games Facebook page has revealed that Europe will receive a black New (non-XL) Nintendo 3DS package containing faceplates, Extreme Butōden pre-installed, as well as a digital copy of Super Butōden 2.

The package will be available 16 October 2015 (alongside the game’s standard release).

Pre-ordering the game will also grant players “early access” to six Z-Assist characters: young Son Goku, Garlic Jr., Super Vegetto, Metal Coola, baby Son Goku, and young Son Gohan. Super Butōden 2 is also included in standard pre-orders and will be a download of the Japanese version; a release outside of Japan likely explains the game’s new replacement music, originally composed by Kenji Yamamoto (under the moniker of “MONOLITH”).

Super Butōden 2, originally released in Japan for the Super Famicom in 1993, did see a limited European localization in 1994.

Only standard-sized (non-XL) models of the New Nintendo 3DS accept custom faceplates. North America currently only has the XL version of the New Nintendo 3DS.

The company also released an English-language promotional video for the game leading up to Japan Expo taking place this weekend:

Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butōden launched in Japan 11 June 2015. First-press copies of the game come packed with bonus content, including a downloadable version of the Super Famicom game Dragon Ball Z: Super Butōden 2 (previously included as a part of the J-Legend Retsuden compilation game; albeit now with replacement music). Arc System Works developed the game for Bandai Namco. The developer previously worked on the Bukū… / Supersonic Warriors games on the Nintendo GameBoy Advance and DS.

The game will be available in Europe 16 October 2015, in North and Latin America 20 October 2015, and in Brazil 23 October 2015.

“Extreme Butōden” (3DS) Japanese 3rd Week Sales Figures

While the rest of the world has to wait until October, Japan has wrapped up its third week with Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butōden on the Nintendo 3DS.

According to the Media Create sales list for the reporting period of 22 June 2015 to 28 June 2015, the game pushed another 7,687 copies, coming in as the 13th-best selling game of the week. This brings the game up to 98,789 cumulative copies sold.

Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butōden launched in Japan 11 June 2015. “Dragon Ball Super” Completion Announcement Event Reveals Series Plot

The V-Jump Channel recently hosted a “Dragon Ball Super Completion Announcement Event” on 01 July 2015 at 1:00PM in Tokyo to promote the upcoming debut (and effective completion of the first episode) of the Dragon Ball Super TV series.

The event was streamed live on Yahoo’s GYAO! website and featured guest appearances from Masako Nozawa (Son Goku), rock band Good Morning America, with the band’s bass player Tanashin in complete Golden Freeza cosplay, and Mandō Kobayashi host Kendō Kobayashi dressed as Yajirobe. Kazuya Yoshii, who is providing the opening theme “Chōzetsu ☆ Dynamic!” for Dragon Ball Super, did make a brief appearance onscreen via a prerecorded message.

Following brief introductions from producer Atsushi Kido, a message from Akira Toriyama was displayed onscreen. The latter portion of his message has been previously published in V-Jump and was recently added to the series’ official website. However, it is the former portion of his comments that are much more intriguing, as they reveal the series’ overall plot! (Be warned, there are heavy spoilers beyond this point!)

“Dragon Ball Super” is a complete continuation of the Majin Boo story arc. It’s got a bit of post-battle aftermath, continues with the “Battle of Gods” arc where the God of Destruction Beerus appears and the “Revival of ‘F'” arc where Freeza comes back to life, and then, I’ve written a strange new story where they finally depart from this universe. They’re fighting against their neighbors, Universe 6! They’ll yell at me if I give away too many spoilers, so I’ll keep the rest a secret, but they’re chasing after giant Super Dragon Balls; I think things will unfold in a bright and simple way, that will be really fun and exciting!

Since it’s another universe, loads of new characters will turn up. I’ll do my best to draw the tons of character designs necessary, so I’m looking forward to this too.

You know, it suddenly occurs to me that somewhere along the line the Dragon Ball anime has become quite a huge story. Since I’m the guy who drew the thing, it’s a bit weird for me to say this, but when I first started out I never dreamed it would have a universe as a setting (laughs). Don’t worry though, it’s still going to be the same sort of easy-to-understand content as always. Please be sure to watch Dragon Ball Super on TV!

It was recently reveled in this week’s issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump that the series will begin six months after Majin Boo’s defeat, placing it in November of Age 774 in the series’ established timeline. From there the series is now set to catch up to the events of Battle of Gods and Revival of “F”, with each being a “retelling” of their respective events, before going on to an all-new inter-universe storyline. This new storyline will feature a new set of “Super” Dragon Balls, feature all-new characters, and much more! It is not clear at the moment just how this new storyline will, if it does at all, tie-in with the events seen 10 years later at the end of the manga in chapters 517, 518, and 519, but it is certainly nice to now have a better idea of the series’ general overall plot and how certain events will tie into the story.

The “Super Start Guide” for Dragon Ball Super will contain information on the “mysterious characters” (one of whom we know is “Champa”), will include a “super comment” from Akira Toriyama, as well as more information about the series’ production. The guide will also come packed with a Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (SSGSS) Son Goku card (GDPJ-06) for the arcade version of Dragon Ball Heroes.

The V-Jump Special Edition: TV Animation “Dragon Ball Super” Super Start Guide will hit magazine stands in Japan 03 July 2015 for ¥750. Copies are available to pre-order from CDJapan and Amazon Japan.
