Toei Animation has uploaded a new promotional video in support of the Dragon Ball Super television series’ on-going “Universe Survival arc“. While a previous video focused solely on #17 (returning to the series after an extended absence), this latest video briefly highlights each member of Universe 7’s team with footage from the original Dragon Ball Z television series (from its Kai remastering) as well as current Super material.

Ten warriors take up the challenge of a battle with survival on the line, universe pitted against universe
The biggest battle royale in history will break out
The only ones to survive will be those standing at the end

The Dragon Ball Super television series now receives weekly simulcast streams on services such as Crunchyroll and Daisuki. FUNimation has also announced their American distribution license for the series, with the English dub beginning earlier this year on Cartoon Network, and a home release set to begin in July.

Though not yet included in Shueisha’s own online listings, Amazon Japan has dated the Dragon Ball Super manga’s third collected volume for 02 June 2017.

The series’ second collected volume saw its release in Japan back in December 2016 spanning chapters 10 to 15 and the second Jump Victory Carnival bonus comic.

The Dragon Ball Super “comicalization” began in June 2015 as a promotional tie-in for the television series. The manga runs monthly in Shueisha’s V-Jump magazine, with the series’ twenty-third chapter coming last week in the magazine’s June 2017 issue; the chapter was published digitally in English the same day by Viz. Illustrated by “Toyotarō” (in all likelihood, a second pen-name used by Dragon Ball AF fan manga author and illustrator “Toyble”), the Dragon Ball Super manga covered the Battle of Gods re-telling, skipped the Resurrection ‘F’ re-telling, and “charged ahead” to the Champa arc to act as further promotion for the television series. Viz is currently releasing free digital chapters of the series; the first print volume is set for release 02 May 2017 followed by the second volume 05 December 2017.

After receiving a couple tiny cover art teases in the June 2017 issue of V-Jump, Shueisha has updated their listings with the cover art and official description for the upcoming first collected volume of Yoshitaka Nagayama‘s Super Dragon Ball Heroes: Dark Demon Realm Mission (“Ankoku Makai Mission”) manga series, “Time Patrol, Move Out!” (出動!タイムパトロール Shutsudō! Taimu Patorōru).

Trunks, who used the time machine, encounters the “Kaiōshin of Time” and joins the “Time Patrol”! What connection does the “Dark Demon Realm” have with the being ravaging the time-space continuum?! Volume 1 of the super-popular card game’s comic! Also specially included is “Ultimate Charisma Mission!!”!

The volume will also come packed with a “Vegeks: Xeno” (fusion of Vegeta and future Trunks) card for the Super Dragon Ball Heroes arcade game.

A sequel/continuation from and initially a replacement for the previous Dragon Ball Heroes Super Charisma Mission! manga series, Dark Demon Realm Mission began in the September 2016 issue of Shueisha’s Saikyō Jump magazine telling a new story set in the Super Dragon Ball Heroes world with Time Patrol Trunks, Chronoa, and more. The series’ sixth chapter will be serialized in the July 2016 issue due out in early June, after this first collected volume’s release.

Nagayama’s original Charisma Mission series debuted with a special Rookie Charisma Mission Episode 0 in the December 2013 issue of Saikyō Jump, then ran in earnest from the July 2014 to July 2016 issues. In it, Engineer Yoshito, Battle Navigator Tsubasa, and Battle Princess Momo illustrate the various features of the game in comedic ways. With the cancellation of Katsuki Hirose‘s Dragon Ball Discross Divine Power God MAX!! spin-off manga series (due to the Discross arcade game’s official discontinuation), Nagayama returned with Super Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Charisma Mission!! in the March 2017 issue, which now runs alongside Dark Demon Realm Mission.

Saikyō Jump currently serializes five Dragon Ball spin-off series: Dragon Ball SD, the Dragon Ball GT anime comic, Dragon Ball Fusions the MANGA!!, Super Dragon Ball Heroes: Dark Demon Realm Mission, and Super Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Charisma Mission!! Beyond Dark Demon Realm Mission, Naho Ooishi‘s Dragon Ball SD is the only other series receiving a collected print (and digital) release.

The first volume will retail for ¥400 (plus tax), will span 176 pages, and hits Japanese shelves 02 May 2017. The volume is available for pre-order on CDJapan and Amazon Japan.

Square Enix has announced a promotional campaign with Amazon for North American Final Fantasy XIV players bringing some familiar-looking “Eastern Journey” items to the game. Players will be able to acquire an “Eastern Journey Battle Staff” (lancer/dragoon weapon), a “Flying Cumulus Mount” to ride atop, as well as general “Eastern Journey Attire” to wear. These items were originally exclusive to Chinese players, and are finally making their way out to more international players.

The items obviously draw inspiration from Journey to the West, the 16th century Chinese novel detailing Xuanzang’s pilgrimage to India for sacred scrolls. Along the way, the priest meets and befriends various monsters, including the self-proclaimed Monkey King himself (Sun Wukong, read in Japanese as “Son Goku”). The novel’s “Compliant Golden-Hooped Rod” served as the inspiration for Son Goku’s Nyoi-bō, while the character’s “somersault cloud” technique served as the inspiration for Kinto-un.

We currently maintain a small “Kanzenshuu” free company (guild) on the game’s Midgardsormr server for those interested in playing along. The game now features a free trial up to level 35.

Various other video games have included Journey to the West homages, from Sleeping Dogs‘ Monkey King pack, to multiple MOBAs’ Wukong-esque characters, up through Enslaved: Odyssey to the West‘s total re-imagination of the story in a post-apocalyptic setting.

Check out Episode #0249 of our podcast for a crash-course in Dragon Ball‘s various connections to Journey to the West. For a brief overview of other Journey to the West adaptations in anime and manga, check out the “Journey West!” article in our 30th anniversary magazine.
