Last week’s July 2016 issue of Saikyō Jump in Japan wrapped up the retelling of the 22nd Tenka’ichi Budokai in Naho Ooishi’s Dragon Ball SD with the series’ 43rd standard chapter. In a surprise twist, the manga will skip the Demon King Piccolo and 23rd Tenka’ichi Budokai arcs entirely.

As Tenshinhan and Goku fall (following his Kamehameha-propelled headbutt), Piccolo is heading for the tournament himself to massacre the martial artists and to steal the Dragon Balls. As he and Piano approach, Goku — with the expected Great Ape silhouette behind him — inadvertently flies directly through Piccolo’s airship. The demon laments dying in such a way and spits out an egg, telling his child to avenge him one day. Meanwhile, Raditz complains about being forced to come out to these parts in order to gather the remaining Saiyans. He vaguely remembers seeing this place before, but brushes it off, cackling, “just you wait, my younger brother Kakarrot!” Just then, a round object (Piccolo’s egg) collides with Raditz’s pod, sending him careening in the other direction. Having strayed from his path toward Earth, he calls for help from Nappa and Vegeta, but they are busy at the moment so it will probably be about 10 years. Vegeta, however, decides that they have no need for that useless fool. And so, unbeknownst to anyone, the mysterious flying object that saved the Earth from the evil hand of the Saiyans was none other than the egg of Piccolo’s offspring. Back on the ground, Tenshinhan is declared the winner. In the middle of the tournament, Goku defeated the mightiest enemies he was supposed to fight later on with incredible momentum. Echoing the turtle sage’s line at the end of Chapter 194, the narration declares that the story is not yet over and that it will continue for just a little bit longer with “Z-level” action! A blurb on the side of the page announces the invasion of the Saiyans next chapter!

The July 2016 issue of Saikyō Jump was released 03 June 2016 for ¥530 and is available to purchase from CDJapan.

Dragon Ball SD began with Saikyō Jump as a quarterly publication with four total issues in 2011 re-telling major aspects of the franchise in an even more childish tone. When the magazine switched to a monthly format in 2012, Dragon Ball SD started over at the very beginning of the series with the same kind of writing and artistic style. The publication switched to a bimonthly release schedule in late-2014. The fourth collected volume of the series was released back in February 2016 covering up through chapter 38.

The third collected edition of Dragon Ball SD was released last month in France from Glénat.

In conjunction with this week’s various Shueisha publications, Toei has released the main visual for Dragon Ball Super‘s upcoming “Future Trunks Arc” set to air beginning 12 June 2016:

trunks_450w

With the threat of the artificial humans resolved, a new menace threatens the world of the future! A man suddenly appears and goes on a rampage, driving humanity to the brink of extinction. Future Trunks resists, but even the power of a Super Saiyan is no match for this man called “Black”. Future Bulma resolves to ask for help from Goku and Vegeta in the world of the past. After taking half a year to gather enough fuel for a one-way trip in the time machine, the formidable foe “Black” bars Bulma and Trunks’ way!

Pictured alongside Trunks is Mai, one of Pilaf’s two henchmen, previously seen in a budding relationship with the present-day Trunks (after having been accidentally wished back into a child) in the 2013 theatrical film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods; incidentally, this subplot was removed from the film’s retelling in Dragon Ball Super.

Mai’s voice actress, Eiko Yamada, recently commented on Twitter that she would be on the show “every week” beginning with episode 47:

yamada_tweet_every_week

Fuji TV producer Osamu Nozaki also provided a statement on the upcoming arc:

This “Future” Trunks arc that’s about to begin will feel a little different than Dragon Ball Super has up to now: a severe battle surpassing time and space, and putting the entire universe at risk! Following on from Majin Boo and Freeza, this time Goku and the gang’s enemy is… Goku?

The key visual is pretty mysterious, but I will give one spoiler and say that the person next to adult Trunks there is Mai. During this nonstop series of desperate situations, with Goku and Vegeta forced into tough fights, expect to see Mai play a surprisingly major role together with Future Trunks!!

Dragon Ball Super airs Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. on Fuji TV in Japan. The “Future Trunks Arc” begins 12 June 2016 with episode 47, “SOS From the Future! A New Black Enemy Appears!!”

A Spanish release of the first volume — “Guía de la Historia y su Mundo” (“World & Story Guide”) — was released back in April 2014.

The four Chōzenshū (“Super Complete Collection”) volumes, released in Japan in early 2013 as part of the lead-up to the theatrical film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, condensed the prior Daizenshuu encyclopedia volumes from the 1990s and added several tidbits of new information from material published and released in the interim timeframe.
