They are the items for which the series is named: the Dragon Balls. Akira Toriyama had toyed with “dragons” and “balls” before in series like Dragon Boy, but it will forever be the Dragon Balls that he is best known for. When the series begins, we are told that Shenlong is able to grant any wish. By the time the franchise and its extensions came to a close, we had three independent sets of Dragon Balls all with their own individual rules and stipulations. Just what are those rules, exactly, though? Decades of fan misinformation combined with Toriyama’s own laid-back writing style have resulted in a bit of confusion, so it is Kanzenshuu to the rescue!

We have known for quite some time about Super Saiyan Bardock and Super Vegetto coming as additional downloadable content for the upcoming Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Vita fighting game, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z, and we just recently learned who the actual stores will be that are dishing out the fighters to pre-order customers.

The official Japanese website for the game has updated to reveal that the two characters will be available for purchase at ¥300 a pop beginning 06 February 2014.

Personal feelings aside – particular on Super Vegetto himself – regarding pre-order bonuses and on-disc content, it is somewhat refreshing to see that these characters may in fact be available down the road to those who miss out on the pre-orer opportunities. We will check in with the North American branch of Namco-Bandai to see if any plans are set to make them available for purchase to those of us on the other side of the Pacific without a pre-order.

UPDATE: Namco-Bandai informs us that there are currently no plans to sell the two additional characters down the line in North America.

Thanks to Shinnin for the heads-up!

A new trailer for the upcoming PlayStation 3 and Vita Jump-franchise crossover fighting game extravaganza, J-Stars Victory Vs, showcases the game’s opening theme, “Fighting Stars”, performed by a trio of shōnen music superstars: Hironobu Kageyama (Dragon Ball Z), Hiroshi Kitadani (One Piece), and Akira Kushida (Kinnikuman/Toriko).

The trailer also showcases some of the latest character additions, such as Koro-sensei (Assassination Classroom), Pegasus Seiya (Saint Seiya), and Hisoka (Hunter x Hunter). A wealth of new characters have been revealed recently in the pages of various Shueisha publications (some not yet showcased in this trailer); we promise to have a comprehensive update for you soon!

The “J-Stars Victory Book,” available to pre-order customers, along with the “Anison” version and its musical inclusions are also given focus at the end of the trailer.

J-Stars Victory Vs is due out exclusively in Japan on the PlayStation 3 and Vita 19 March 2014 in both regular and “Limited Edition / Anison” versions. Pre-orders are available on sites such as CDJapan and Play-Asia, though some retailers are already sold out of their “Limited Edition” allocations.

Sony has announced their “PS Vita PLAY” program covering the next month of new releases for their latest portable system. As a part of this, PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to obtain these downloadables versions of games for a reduced price, and if multiple games are purchased, gamers will receive a small amount of cash back on their account.

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z will be included as a part of this promotion, and will be available to Plus subscribers at a reduced price of $31.99 (down from the $39.99 MSRP).

While free games obtained via the PlayStation Plus service expire when a subscription lapses, games purchased as a Plus subscriber – even at a reduced rate – are yours to keep.

Battle of Z on the Vita will be a download-only version in North America anyway, so those looking to pick it up on release may wish to look into a Plus subscription if you have not already!

There has not been any clarification just yet over downloadable content in the Vita version (either the Naruto-franchise outfit or either retailer-specific pre-order characters), but we will let you know as soon as we can!

As each new year begins, we like to take a look back at some of the biggest stories to hit Dragon Ball fandom that prior year, pick out some of our own favorites, and make predictions for the new year. Part of that ritual is also checking in on the predictions we made the year before and seeing how absolutely, disgustingly, embarrassingly incorrect we all were.

For the most part, anyway.

What do you all see coming our way in 2014? Give the show a listen and let us know!

SHOW DESCRIPTION:
Episode #0353! VegettoEX and Julian discuss their own top three Dragon Ball stories from 2013. What were the biggest things to smack us upside the head over the last twelve months? How did we do with our predictions from last year, and what do we see on the horizon for 2014?

Enjoy! Discuss this episode on the Kanzenshuu forum, and let us know your predictions for 2014… as well as how nicely or poorly you made out with last year’s predictions!

(We are aware that Robo-Julian makes an unwanted appearance for the tail-end of his predictions. Rest assured it is just for that tiny little segment and then he is back to normal to wrap up the episode. The content was important, so it was something we decided to keep as-is rather than cutting it out entirely.)

After being up in the air for quite some time since their original reveals, American outlets are finally offering up their exclusive grabs of pre-order downloadable content for the upcoming Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Best Buy will give pre-order customers access to Super Vegetto:

GameStop will give pre-order customers access to Super Saiyan Bardock:

Namco-Bandai is releasing the Vita version as a digital-only product in North America, so pre-order DLC offerings still seem rather vague at this point.

It all happened so quickly that it nearly passed us all by without even a second thought: we have hit the century mark! The translations archive now houses over 100 translated documents, interviews, Q&As, articles, and much more. Needless to say we are quite proud of all we have accomplished to date, but adding this to the résumé feels quite good. There truly is no other archive or resource quite like it for the Dragon Ball franchise.

However, while our archive has expanded, our organization of it has remained relatively untouched since the combined site’s launch in April 2012. To remedy this problem, the translations page has been entirely revamped, not only to better organize the translations, but to add tag filtering. This will help narrow down searches for specific types of subject matter, and in hopes of improving the user experience.

To celebrate, we are adding three new non-“Battle of Gods” translations to the archive, and diving back into recent guide books. The first two are some fun Q&As with the various staff and cast of Dragon Ball Z and author Akira Toriyama, respectively. The third and final translation of the day is the first in a two-part interview with author Akira Toriyama from the Super Exciting Guide: Story Volume.

That may be all the translations we have for you this time around, but worry not: we have plenty more sitting on our shelves just waiting to make their way into the Translations Archive. Here’s to the next 100 translations!

A new year marks a new anniversary for the website, and what would a new year be without a new re-release of the Dragon Ball Z TV series? Having been here for the entire ride, we decided to dive back and look at every single last “DBZ Vol. 1” release FUNimation has put out in North America. Arrival hit VHS in 1997, and the latest Blu-ray releases came out just a week or so ago. In between we have seen everything from in-house remasters to licensed Japanese remasters to releases canceled mid-run. Over these seventeen years, how have the different releases stacked up to each other, how have they been marketed differently from each other, and where on Earth do we go from here?

With the first release hitting North American shelves this past week from FUNimation, it seems that Madman is jumping on the bandwagon to adopt the company’s latest Dragon Ball Z TV series Blu-rays for an Australian release in April 2014.

The first set is currently set for a 10 April 2014 release with an MSRP of $59.95 AUD.

In addition to on-again/off-again Kai releases, Madman put out their version of FUNimation’s Dragon Ball Z DVD orange brick season packs over the course of 2007-2009.
