Episode Summary
Part A
Goku and Kuririn are confronted by apparitions of foes from their past: Tambourine and Piccolo, Vegeta and Nappa, Freeza and Cell, etc. Goku is not worried though, since these guys must obviously all be illusions. After all, there is no way that Vegeta would be hanging out here with Nappa. Still, illusions or not, these enemies have no trouble punching Goku.
Goku tells Kuririn they need to take out these foes and find the Paradise Grass fast, but seeing them causes Kuririn to remember all his previous deaths, at the hands of Tambourine, Freeza, and Boo. Even that time he was turned to stone by Dabra! Goku tells him again to start fighting, but Kuririn seems too scared. Then a phantom of Bulma appears, freaking them both out.
Back at Kame House, the Turtle Hermit thanks the Fortuneteller Crone for her help, but she insists on a ten million Zenny fee. Watching Goku and Kuririn’s progress on her crystal ball, the Fortuneteller Crone notes that the Turtle Hermit’s idea of therapy is a bit drastic. No. 18 and Marron arrive, concerned about Kuririn, and start watching him on the Fortuneteller Crone’s ball, too.
The Fortuneteller Crone explains that Goku and Kuririn are in the Forest of Fear, a place on the border between the living world and the afterlife, where traumatic memories manifest themselves. In their case, this means memories of their old battles, and therefore of their past opponents (and, for some reason, Bulma).
Meanwhile ack at the forest, Goku and Kuririn prepare to unleash a double Kamehameha at the pursuing enemies, but Kuririn has some reservations about attacking Bulma. Goku points out it is not the real Bulma, and the two fire away!
The enemies disintegrate into sparks of light, and Goku suggests they get back to searching for the Paradise Grass. Kuririn is nervous about the phantom enemies reappearing, but Goku just thinks that makes it interesting. He is happy to fight them again!
Kuririn cannot understand Goku’s cheerful attitude though. He wants to go home; getting stronger is not worth this kind of emotional trauma. Goku protests that if Kuririn does not get stronger, he will not be able to fight the next time a tough opponent shows up, but Kurirn is fine with not fighting. He is not like Goku!
Kuririn flies off and Goku goes after him, but soon their way is barred by a quickly growing barrier of tree limbs. Flowers sprout and eject a thick smoke, which forms into more phantoms of the same old enemies, this time much bigger than before. A giant Tambourine knocks Kuririn down to the ground, and he realizes that they will not be able to leave until they have completed their errand for the Turtle Hermit.
Goku and Kuririn continue to struggle against the endless wave of phantom enemies, while back at Kame House No. 18 and Marron find the sight disturbing. No. 18 berates the Turtle Hermit and the Fortuneteller Crone for their bad taste in setting this whole thing up, but when the Turtle Hermit suggests she go save Kuririn, she decides to stay put. Kuririn is struggling against himself, after all.
Part B
Goku decides to finish all his phantom enemies off at once, and transforms into Super Saiyan 3. But his foes just grow even bigger in response. This gives Goku an idea: he reverts to his base form, closes his eyes, and concentrates. The giant enemies soon all dissolve into sparks. He did it! Watching from Kame House, the Turtle Hermit notes that Goku has figured it out… but will Kuririn?
At that moment, Kuririn is being menaced by countless phantom Freezas. Goku hears his screams and wants to fly to his aid, but realizes if he flies then more phantom enemies will appear. So he calls for Kinto-Un and rides off on that.
As his phantom foes continue to change form (from Freeza, then to Tambourine, Cell, and Nappa), Kuririn figures the Turtle Hermit sent him here to face his past and overcome it. Kuririn attacks with a Taiyō-Ken and a Kienzan, but neither have much effect, and Kuririn realizes that it is his own ki that powers these enemies.
When he sits down and meditates, the enemies all freeze in place. It was his own fear that kept making them bigger and more numerous. By controlling his own emotions and ki, he smashes through the giant Nappas blocking his way.
No. 18 and Marron are thrilled, but the Turtle Hermit and the Fortuneteller Crone have one more trick up their sleeves. As Goku continues to search for Kuririn, a phantom of Super Shenlong appears and wraps around him and Kinto-Un like a giant python. With the two of them so close together, Goku cannot free himself without destroying Kinto-Un, too. He has no choice but to rely on Kuririn to save them both! Thankfully Kuririn is there and has conquered his fear.
Concentrating first, Kuririn punches the phantom Super Shenlong square in the forehead, causing it to recoil in pain and free Goku and Kinto-Un. Goku powers up into Super Saiyan Blue, and he and Kuririn fire a double Kamehameha to finish Super Shenlong off. The sparks from Super Shenlong instantly sprout into a huge host of Paradise Grass, which they harvest and take back to Kame House.
On the way back, Kuririn notes how Goku always cheerfully faces any danger. He wants to be strong like him, and has resolved to become a martial artist again… for both his own sake, and Marron’s. At Kame House, he meets up with No. 18 and Marron, who are suitably impressed by his efforts.
Goku presents the Turtle Hermit with the Paradise Grass, while noting that the whole “race” idea pretty much got thrown out the window. The Turtle Hermit backs out on teaching them the secret to instantly powering up. No. 18 thinks it was just a lie to trick them, but Kuririn thinks different: the secret was controlling their own emotions and ki. Goku finds this idea convincing, but the Fortuneteller Crone is not so sure.
The Turtle Hermit chows down on the grass, claiming he will live another 1,000 years… just long enough to pay the Fortuneteller Crone her ten million Zenny. Back at Kuririn’s house, No. 18 shaves his head (signifying his return to martial arts), and Marron tells him he looks strong. Goku stops by wanting to spar again, and Kuririn happily agrees… provided Goku does not go Super Saiyan!
