Gods of Destruction are divine beings who are recruited from the ranks of mortals.[2] One God of Destruction presides over each of the twelve universes, and each has an Angel serving as their attendant. Each God of Destruction is life-bound to their Kaiōshin; if one dies, so does the other.[3] The Gods of Destruction and their attendant Angels are named after alcoholic beverages.[4]

The Gods of Destruction are not inherently evil; they exist to balance the creation power of gods like the Kaiō and Kaiōshin. The Gods of Destruction are far more powerful than the Kaiōshin, but they are supposed to be equal in rank.[5] The power of Destruction is such that Gods of Destruction are not supposed to fight each other because the fallout would destroy universes,[6] but the Omni-Kings have allowed them to fight each other in special locations, such as the World of Void in the Dragon Ball Super anime,[7] or the Omni-King's Palace in the manga.[8] The Angels are more powerful than their Gods of Destruction, and they can step in to prevent their charges from destroying too much.[6][9][10]

Name

Toyotarō (as Toyble) draws a scenario where Whis creates the God of Destruction Lood while Beerus sleeps.[11]

The term hakaishin is a common term in Japan that is used to refer to some real-world mythological characters, and it makes other appearances in popular culture as well, such as in the Yu-Gi-Oh card game. It has also been used previously in Dragon Ball. Cell was called a "God of Destruction" in the title of Dragon Ball Z Episode 160. Relatedly, Vegeta is called "Prince of Destruction" (破壊王子/Hakai Ōji) in the titles of Dragon Ball Z Episode 228 and Dragon Ball Kai Episode 113 (Dragon Ball Z Kai Episode 120). Doctor Mu's creation Lood is referred to as a "god of destruction" in the ending narration of Dragon Ball GT Episode 13, and again in the opening and ending narrations of Dragon Ball GT Episode 14. His design might have been an influence for Mosco, the God of Destruction of Universe 3; when Toyotarō was still updating his Toyble blog, he drew a comic where Whis joked about having made a new God of Destruction (Lood) while Beerus was sleeping.[11]

Iwen is the God of Destruction of Universe 1, attended by the Angel Awamo. His body conceals intense emotions which are contrary to his cuddly appearance.[12][13] Iwen's name is likely a rearrangement of the Japanese transliteration of "wine" (ワイン/wain), an alcoholic beverage made from fermented grapes. Helles is the God of Destruction of Universe 2, attended by the Angel Souwa. A god in the form of a woman, she sings the praises of the magnificence of Universe 2's "Power of Love". She has an unusually high sense of aesthetics and hates ugly things.[15][16] Helles (ヘレス/Heresu) is a traditional German pale lager beer, produced chiefly in Southern Germany, particularly Munich. ヘレス is also the katakana transliteration of the Spanish word for Sherry (jerez), a fortified white wine made from grapes grown near Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia, Spain. Helles was designed by Toyotarō and Akira Toriyama.[14]

Mosco is a robot-like God of Destruction in Universe 3, attended by the Angel Camparri. It is said that Mosco has surpassed mortal intelligence, and that because he is an old robot and cannot speak, he communicates his intentions with electronic sound translated by Camparri.[17][18] However he is actually a mech operated by a small horned man named Mule.[19] Mosco's name is taken from Moscow Mule (モスコ・ミュール/Mosuko Myūru), a cocktail served in a copper mug and made with vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice. Mosco was designed by Toyotarō.[14]

Champa (シャンパ)

Champa is the God of Destruction of Universe 6, attended by the Angel Vados. Champa's brother Beerus is the God of Destruction in Universe 7, attended by Vados's brother Whis. Champa's name is derived from Champagne (シャンパン/Shanpan), a sparkling wine produced from grapes grown in the Champagne region of France. Champa was designed by Akira Toriyama.[14]

Beerus (ビルス)
Japanese VA: Kōichi Yamadera
FUNimation VA: Jason Douglas
First Appears: Dragon Ball Super Chapter 1 / Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods

Beerus is the God of Destruction of Universe 7 and he is attended by the Angel Whis. Beerus's twin brother Champa holds the same position in Universe 6 and is attended by Whis's sister Vados. Beerus's name was originally adapted from the Japanese transliteration of the German pronunciation of Virus (ビールス/Biirusu). In the original script for Battle of Gods, Yūsuke Watanabe had imagined Beerus as the God of Destruction responsible for infecting the Saiyans with evil.[22][23] When Akira Toriyama revised the script, he thought that the pun was on the German word Bier (also ビールス), so he named Beerus's attendant Whis after "whiskey".[24] This accident served to establish the theme of Gods of Destruction and Angels being named after alcoholic beverages. Beerus was designed by Akira Toriyama.[25]

Liquir (リキール)
Japanese VA: Daisuke Kishio

First Appears: Dragon Ball Super Chapter 28 / Dragon Ball Super Episode 78

Liquir is the God of Destruction of Universe 8, attended by the Angel Korn. Liquir lives to fix defects in his Kaiōshin Il's plans, and strictly destroys anyone who lowers their universe's level by not admitting to defects in plans.[26] Liquir's name is likely derived from "liqueur" (リキュール/Rikyūru), a term referring to any beverage made from a distilled spirit that has been flavored and bottled with additional sweetener. Liquir was designed by Toyotarō.[14]

Sidra (シドラ)
Japanese VA: Yasuhiro Mamiya
FUNimation VA: Greg Dulcie
First Appears: Dragon Ball Super Chapter 28 / Dragon Ball Super Episode 78

Sidra is the God of Destruction of Universe 9, attended by the Angel Mohito. Sidra is indecisive and normally cannot bring himself to destroy anything, often suffering from depression due to his responsibilities,[27] but he destroyed an entire planet of people who rioted in fear of the destruction of their universe.[28] Sidra's name comes directly from the katakana spelling of the Spanish word for "cider", shidra (シドラ/shidora). The word used to refer to alcoholic "cider" in Japanese is "cidre" (シードル/shīdoru). Cider is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermented juice of apples. Sidra was designed by Akira Toriyama.[14]

Rumoosh (ラムーシ)

First Appears: Dragon Ball Super Chapter 28 / Dragon Ball Super Episode 78

Rumoosh is the God of Destruction of Universe 10, attended by the Angel Kusu. Rumoosh is a relatively lazy God of Destruction who doesn't like to destroy planets because he finds it to be too much trouble. He likes people who fawn over him for being a God of Destruction.[29] Rumoosh is likely derived from "rum" (ラム酒/ramushu), a distilled alcoholic beverage made from sugarcane byproducts. Rumoosh was designed by Toyotarō.[14]

Vermoud (ベルモッド)
Japanese VA: Masami Kikuchi
FUNimation VA: Markus Lloyd
First Appears: Dragon Ball Super Chapter 28 / Dragon Ball Super Episode 78

Vermoud is the God of Destruction of Universe 11, attended by the Angel Marcarita. Vermoud has a strong sense of justice and never forgives evil. He gets fired up about the Pride Troopers' efforts to punish evils in Universe 11.[30][31] Vermoud's name is likely derived from vermouth (ベルモット/berumotto), an aromatized, fortified wine flavored with various botanicals. The character name adds a diacritic sign to the last syllable of the katakana used to write "vermouth" in Japanese, altering its pronunciation from "to" to "do". Vermoud was designed by Toyotarō and Akira Toriyama.[14]

Giin (ジーン)
Japanese VA: Yūsei Oda
FUNimation VA: Reagan Murdock
First Appears: Dragon Ball Super Chapter 28 / Dragon Ball Super Episode 78

Giin is the God of Destruction of Universe 12, attended by the Angel Martine. Giin carries out the minimum necessary destruction mercilessly but without discrimination. Before the Tournament of Power, he had grown bored because he was running out of things to destroy.[32] Giin's name is likely adapted from "gin" (ジン/jin), a juniper-flavored spirit made by either redistilling ethanol of agricultural origin or adding approved natural flavoring to a neutral spirit of agricultural origin. The character name adds a vowel elongation to the first syllable of the katakana used to write "gin" in Japanese. Giin was designed by Toyotarō.[14]

Recruitment

Several statements are made throughout the series regarding the recruitment of mortals to become Gods of Destruction. All of these comments involve either Son Goku and Vegeta of Universe 7 or Jiren and Toppo of Universe 11. These statements are as follows:

ウイス：あなた ビルス様が死んだら次の破壊神になりませんか？
Whis: You there, when Beerus-sama passes away, would you be the next Destroyer?
ビルス：おい！
Beerus: Hey!
孫悟空：ヘヘッ｡ それはごめんだよ｡
Son Goku: I'm afraid not.
ウイス：それは残念｡
Whis: That's too bad.
— Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods

This exchange occurs at the end of the film, after Beerus destroys a piece of Earth, suggesting he will destroy the rest at a later date.[2] In the Dragon Ball Super anime, Whis tells Vegeta he will only train him if he agrees to become a God of Destruction:

ベジータ：お前には　教えられるのか。その気を制御する方法を！お前の元で修行させてくれ！
Vegeta: Can you teach me this method of controlling my ki? Let me train under you!
ウイス：いいですよ。あなたが　破壊神になったらの話ですけどね。
Whis: Yes, I will. Once you become a Destroyer, that is.
— Dragon Ball Super Episode 16

However, Vegeta is able to convince him by offering him cup ramen instead.[33] When Goku joins him on Beerus's planet, this scene from the film is repeated verbatim:[34][35]

ビルス：何で そこまでして強くなりたいんだ？まさか 破壊神の後釜狙っているんじゃないだろうね｡
Beerus: Why do you want to get stronger so badly? You wouldn't be gunning for the job of Destroyer, would you?
孫悟空：違うよ！オラ ただ強くなりてえだけさ｡
Son Goku: It ain't that. I just wanna get stronger, that's all.
ベジータ：俺は この野郎に抜け駆けされたくないだけだ｡
Vegeta: And I don't want to be left in the dust by this bastard, that's all.
— Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'

In the Dragon Ball Super manga, Champa asks whether Goku and Vegeta are Beerus's apprentices:[36]

シャンパ：なんだその２人は？新しい弟子か？
Champa: Who are those two? Your new apprentices?
— Dragon Ball Super Chapter 5

And just before the Tournament of Power, the Oracle Fish tells Beerus that Goku and Vegeta will be his rivals one day. Beerus challenges Vegeta to a match. After Beerus defeats him, he tells Vegeta that he could be a candidate for a God of Destruction in another universe:[37]

ビルス：このオレ様の強敵になるなんて100万年先の話だわ！.....まぁ短期間でここまできた努力だけは認めてやる　他の宇宙でなら破壊神の候補ぐらいにはなれるんじゃないか？
Beerus: At this rate, it'll take you a million years to become my rival! Well, I'll give you points for improving so quickly. You could probably be a candidate for a God of Destruction in another universe...
— Dragon Ball Super Chapter 27

In the next chapter, Toppo is introduced as a candidate for God of Destruction in Universe 11:[8]

大神官：おや　ベルモッドさん
Great Priest: Oh. Lord Belmod.
ベルモッド：はっ
Vermoud: My lord.
大神官：うしろの方はどなたですか？
Great Priest: May I ask you about the gentleman behind you?
ベルモッド：はい　こちらはトッポと申します　実はわたくし近く引退を考えておりまして時期破壊神子砲としてただいま育成中ございます　たまたまきておりましたのでこれも経験と連れて参りました
Vermoud: This man, my lord, is Toppo. To tell you the truth, I am planning on retiring any day now. I am training him to succeed me as the next God of Destruction. Because he happened to be with me, I brought him along for the experience.
トッポ：トッポです　よろしくお願いいたします
Toppo: I am Toppo, at your service.
大神官：そうですか？　では、破壊神に合格できるよう頑張ってください
Great Priest: Understood. Please work hard to become a great God of Destruction.
トッポ：あ...ありがとうございます！
Toppo: M-My sincere thanks to you for such kind words.

— Dragon Ball Super Chapter 28

In the following chapter, the following exchange occurs during Goku's fight with Toppo:

トッポ：いったい何者だ　キサマも破壊神の候補なのか？
Toppo: Who are you? Are you also a candidate for a God of Destruction?
孫悟空：破壊神なんかぜんぜん興味ないさ　オラはただ強くなりてぇだけだ
Goku: I have no interest whatsoever in becoming a God of Destruction. All I want is to get stronger.
トッポ：興味がない......か
Toppo: Have no interest?
孫悟空：おめぇは破壊神候補なんだろ？ さすがだな　他の神様と一緒で気が読めねぇ　ただ相当強えぇのだけはわかんぞ
Goku: You're going to become a God of Destruction, right? I can't sense your power just like the gods behind us. But I can still tell how incredibly strong you are.
トッポ：お前も実力を隠しているな
Toppo: I can tell you're hiding what you are truly capable of too.

And in the following chapter, after Toppo defeats Goku, he tells Goku about Jiren:

孫悟空：そ...そのジレンってのはおめぇとこの破壊神様よりも強えぇってのか...!?
Son Goku: W-Wait, so you're saying this Jiren guy is stronger than the God of Destruction of your universe?
トッポ：そうだ
Toppo: That's right.
孫悟空：破壊神候補っていうからてっきりおめぇが一番かと思ってたぞ...
Son Goku: But since you're a candidate for the God of Destruction, I thought for sure that you'd be the strongest...
トッポ：...ジレンはお前と一緒では破壊神になる気はないらしいからな...
Toppo: That's because Jiren isn't interested in becoming a God of Destruction—just like you.
— Dragon Ball Super Chapter 30

In the manga, Toppo merely uses divine ki like Goku, a contrast to his special Destruction power in the anime. Toppo's candidacy to be a God of Destruction was first mentioned in his biography on the Toei website before the Universe Survival arc even began,[38] but this was not explained in the anime until the final stages of the Tournament of Power, when Toppo first reveals his power:[39]

ビルス：破壊だ。
Beerus: It's destruction.
クリリン：でも　破壊の力って…。
Kuririn: But, the Power of Destruction...
ベルモッド：いかにも。俺たち破壊神だけの力！
Vermoud: Indeed. It's a power belonging only to Gods of Destruction!
カイ：そして　トッポはわが第１１宇宙における破壊神候補！
Cae: And Toppo is... a candidate to be our Universe 11's God of Destruction!
マルカリータ：私との特訓の成果　今こそ皆さまに見せるときですます。
Markarita: Now is the time to show the results of our training, yes.
ベルモッド：覚悟を決めたトッポは破壊神と同じ。そう！破壊神　トッポの誕生だ！
Vermoud: Having made up his mind, Toppo is no different from a God of Destruction. Indeed! It's the birth of God of Destruction Toppo!
