In conjunction with last week’s January 2017 issue of V-Jump, Shueisha has released the cover art for the forthcoming second collected edition of the Dragon Ball Super manga, due out in print in Japan 02 December 2016:

In addition to promoting a special poster that readers can send in to win via lottery (with only 10 winners to be selected next year), the January 2017 issue of V-Jump also contained a short message from illustrator Toyotarō, stating:

原作は鳥山明先笙ですので、漫画はTVアニメとは少しちがうアプローチ、ちがった演出になっています。 2巻では、そのあたりも楽しんでいただけたらうれしいです!! これからもよろしくね!!

Since it’s Akira Toriyama-sensei doing the original story, the manga has a slightly different approach than the TV anime, which results in a different kind of production. I hope you all enjoy that aspect of it for volume 2!! And I hope you keep reading!!

Volume 2 of the Dragon Ball Super manga collected edition is due out in print in Japan 02 December 2016 for ¥420 spanning 216 pages. A digital release will follow 04 January 2017. The second volume is available for pre-order via CDJapan and Amazon Japan.

The first collected edition was announced back in February and saw its release in April covering the series’ first nine chapters, one spin-off chapter, and a special interview between Toyotarō and original author Akira Toriyama. Since this volume’s release, another nine regular chapters and one more spin-off chapter have been released.

The Dragon Ball Super manga began in June 2015 as a promotional tie-in for the television series. The manga runs monthly in Shueisha’s V-Jump magazine, with the series’ eighteenth chapter printed last week in the magazine’s January 2017 issue. Illustrated by “Toyotarō” (in all likelihood, a second pen-name used by Dragon Ball AF fan manga author and illustrator “Toyble”), the Dragon Ball Super manga covered the Battle of Gods re-telling, skipped the Resurrection ‘F’ re-telling, and “charged ahead” to the Champa arc to act as further promotion for the television series. Viz is currently releasing free digital chapters of the series, and will release their own collected print edition beginning in May 2017.

In promotion of the 69th episode of the Dragon Ball Super television series (set to air in Japan 04 December 2016), the official Dragon Ball Super website has posted a new “Special Interview” with Masako Nozawa (Son Goku, et al.) and Mami Koyama (Arale).

nozawa_koyama_1-resave

Koyama:
I was so happy when I heard they were doing an episode where Goku fights Arale-chan! I’m a big Mako-san [Masako Nozawa] fan, so it was a pleasure to get to work with her again!… I can’t believe I get to see Arale-chan‘s world of Penguin Village once more.

Nozawa:
I figure Goku is probably happy about getting to fight Arale-chan! But I bet he won’t just go “hey, she seems strong”; he’ll be more like “boy, this sure takes me back!” Because Goku becomes friends with everybody before too long.

The 1996 #13 issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump in Japan contained a special feature promoting the new Dragon Ball GT television series as well as the 10th anniversary theatrical film, The Path to Power. Introducing this special feature was a short, one-page comic by none other than original author Akira Toriyama himself! In the comic, Toriyama describes his personal business of the day, lack of self-confidence, and anticipation for the new animated works. While Toriyama had provided brief comments both before and after the completion of the Dragon Ball GT television series, this may have been his only comment on Dragon Ball GT during its actual broadcast (though he admits not having actually seen any of it yet due to the production timeframe of the self-insert comic), and likely the last time he ever drew the child version of Dragon Ball GT‘s Goku.
