When Jaco the Galactic Patrolman was first unveiled, there was excitement in the air simply over it being a new short work from Akira Toriyama. Shueisha spilled the beans very early on, however, announcing it as a “shocking revival of Dragon Ball“…!

SHOW DESCRIPTION:
Episode #0345! VegettoEX, Meri, and Julian dive into “Jaco the Galactic Patrolman”. With the 11-chapter series now complete and confirmed as a “Dragon Ball” tie-in, what did we think about it? Does it live up to the success showcased by its predecessor? Is it a good, self-contained story in and of itself, or does it rely on “Dragon Ball” to get any kind of reaction out of the reader? This week’s news and stories from Julian’s trip to a “Battle of Gods” viewing party wraps up the episode!

Namco-Bandai has released a new promotional video teasing the upcoming “new chapter” for the card-based arcade game Dragon Ball Heroes:

The promotional video describes the — perhaps unfortunately phrased — “new series” under development for the game, which will include the Evil Dragons from Dragon Ball GT and the GT/adult-style Gotenks that still has yet to make his official appearance in the game. The teaser concludes with plugs for both V-Jump and Saikyō Jump, both of which will have additional information in the coming months.

The December 2013 issue of Saikyō Jump in particular (due out 02 November 2013) is set to include three Dragon Ball Heroes cards along with bonus material across a 100+ page extravaganza of Dragon Ball things!

  • “Entry Set 0” for Dragon Ball Heroes, featuring Goku: Child, Kuririn: Child, and Kame-Sen’nin
  • Large posters and bonus stickers
  • Deluxe Dragon Ball Heroes guidebook
  • A 3-shot Dragon Ball manga (it is unclear what this fully entails; it may be that the regular monthly chapter of Dragon Ball SD is a part of this, or it may not!)

Dedicated Kanzenshuu readers may have been wondering over the last couple months why we have not kept up with the usual detailing of Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission chapters, or why our Dragon Ball SD documentation abruptly concluded with the four original quarterly chapters.

We have been hard at work behind the scenes on a complete overhaul for our “Official Manga Spin-Offs” section, and are proud to debut its current progress. What previously existed as just a single page detailing some of the more recent spin-offs is now a completely fleshed-out section with dedicated pages for each spin-off that has ever been released going back to the franchise’s original serialization.

Perhaps most significantly, this includes complete documentation for Akira Toriyama’s latest series, Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, which is — as Shueisha originally promised! — an exciting revival of Dragon Ball.

The revamped “Official Manga Spin-Offs” section contains the following main documentation pages:

With today’s overhaul, the Original Illustrated StoriesCrossoversEpisode of Bardock, and Jaco the Galactic Patrolman sub-sections are complete with individual documentation pages for each chapter which outline things like cover art, chapter notes with references and easter eggs, color page comparisons, etc.

The other sub-sections, as noted, have complete main documentation pages, and we will continue to work our way backward to fill in individual chapter pages for them. Some of that work has already begun, so stay tuned for these additions in the near future!

Two “Anime Comics” releases are due out this week (specifically Friday, 04 October 2013) from Shueisha: one for the new film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, and a re-release of the one for DBZ Movie 8 (the first Broli movie).

We tend not to see cover art for these types of releases until the same week they are due out, and these two were no exception to the rule as Shueisha’s online listings have both finally updated with said cover art:

The film versions of the comics are sometimes called “animanga”; screen shots from the movie have dialog bubbles added in to contain text, with the film then presented in printed comic form. The most recent release (back in 2010) was an anime comic for the 2008 Jump Super Anime Tour special.

The Battle of Gods comic will retail for ¥1,400 (tax included), while the DBZ Movie 8 comic re-release will retail for ¥700 (tax included). Both are available for pre-order via CDJapan and Amazon Japan.

A special note included alongside the last page of next week’s upcoming final, “+1 / DB-1” chapter of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman in the 2013 #44 issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump is an announcement that a collected print manga volume is on the way!

ご愛読ありがとうございました!! JC(コミックス)は1月4日発売予定です!! お楽しみに!!

Thank you for reading!! The Comics (tankōbon) is planned for release on 04 January!! Look forward to it!!

There you have it: those of you looking to pick up all eleven chapters of the independent story + Dragon Ball tie-in can look forward to it 04 January 2014 from Shueisha in Japan. There is no word yet on the physical size of the volume or inclusion of any color pages (which, at this point, extend solely to the first chapter’s title page).

If Viz makes any announcements about a collected volume release of the series in English — digitally or print — we will be sure to pass the news along, as well. Until then, this is just confirmation of an original-language, print edition in Japan.

Earlier this month, the 2013 #42 issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump in Japan revealed the previously-hinted-at bonus downloadable game coming packaged with first-pressings of J Legend Retsuden on the Japanese Nintendo 3DS: Dragon Ball Z: Gekishin Furīza!! (“The Fierce God Freeza”), the fifth game for the franchise on the Nintendo Famicom, and the sequel to Assault!! The Saiyans. The downloadable game has also since been revealed on the compilation’s official website.

In “Tenka’ichi Budōkai mode”, entering seven play-throughs worth of passwords obtained by beating the previous game will allow you to make your way through Gekishin Furīza!! with that same power already unleashed.

This brings the total package of Dragon Ball games to four, with this extra downloadable title being in addition to the three games that come on the physical 3DS cartridge itself.

Also included, as a part of the actual compilation, will be the first Yū Yū Hakusho game on the Super Famicom from 1993. Four Yū Yū Hakusho games were eventually released on the Super Famicom.

A trailer from this year’s Tokyo Game Show showcases all of the currently-announced games for the compilation, as well as bonus features like saving, borders, hints, and manuals:

J Legend Retsuden is due out 07 November 2013 for ¥4,980. The game is available for pre-order from Amazon Japan and Play-Asia, the latter of which is currently offering free shipping on the game. As always, we must note that the Nintendo 3DS is indeed region-locked, so players looking to pick it up will still need a Japanese Nintendo 3DS.

Next week’s 2013 #44 issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump in Japan is set to contain the eleventh and last of the originally-numbered “10+1” chapters of Akira Toriyama’s currently-running manga, Jaco the Galactic Patrolman. The series was teased early on by Toriyama with a chapter comment noting, “The content seems a bit dated, but if you read to the end, you’ll understand why.” Later, Shueisha teased with, “The whole world’s long-awaited return of a ‘legend’ is here!!” until finally coming out with, “The shocking revival of ‘Dragon Ball’!!”

WARNING: Spoilers Ahoy!

In next week’s chapter, it is revealed that Jaco was indeed sent to Earth to stop a Saiyan from Planet Vegeta. This Saiyan ends up at Son Gohan’s house, eating up a ton. He is super-strong, so it is a good thing Gohan is a martial arts master. Gohan offers to let him stay and learn with him if he does not have a home to go back to. Returning to the present (from the decade-earlier timeframe of the main story), Omori narrates how, not too long ago, Tights’ sister Bulma stopped by — everyone has met before when Tights’ family visited, including a child Bulma and Dr. Brief, who knows Omori by reputation for his work in space-time research. Being a super-genius, Bulma had already graduated from university and had set out on a trip. She had said something about looking for mysterious orbs that grant you any wish when brought together. She showed off two, which were made of a substance that does not exist on Earth, so she reasoned they came from outer space. It all sounds quite suspicious, but space is vast, so perhaps this sort of mysterious orb exists out there somewhere. Omori notes that he will ask Jaco about it next time he stops by. Meanwhile, Son Goku is dragging his catch back to the house…

There are obviously a few contradictions between the events depicted here in Jaco and how they transpire in the original Dragon Ball manga (things such as Bulma heading back to school after the Pilaf story arc), but the tie-in status is clearly undeniable at this point.

There is much more to come once the chapter officially hits next Monday (30 September 2013) in physical form on Japanese shelves and digitally in English via Viz, so stay tuned to Kanzenshuu over the next week or so for an incredible blow-out on Jaco the Galactic Patrolman and a slew of other spin-off manga projects!

Japanese fan “Toyble” has been hard at work on his Dragon Ball AF comic/series/dōjinshi for quite a few years now — in fact, it was back in 2008 that we first dove into the series on our podcast for a quick review!

When Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission — the spin-off promotional manga currently published in V-Jumpfirst debuted back in September 2012, comparisons between newcomer “Toyotarō” and “Toyble” flew left and right. No confirmations were ever given, but the signs seemed to be there: the art style similarities, a slight similarity in the two names, and the comparative-slowness of additional Dragon Ball AF work from “Toyble”.

A recent release of Dragon Ball AF from “Toyble” contains a special closing message:

toyble_toyotaro

…So, due to a variety of circumstances, I have been unable to continue drawing Dragon Ball AF.
But it’s a work I feel an attachment to, since I did get my start writing with it, and all.
No matter how many years it takes, I intend to keep writing.
I hope you’ll find it in your hearts to look on it fondly.
— Toyble, 10 August 2013

Between Yi Xing Long stating (within the comic) that Toyble, the ruler of this world, cannot continue the story because he has begun something else instead (along with a mention of a card battle), and Toyble’s own message alongside a silhouette of Beat (the hero of Victory Mission), as our own Herms points out, this all but explicitly confirms fandom’s theory that “Toyble” and “Toyotarō” may indeed be the same person.

Thanks to various forum folks for keeping on top of the series all these years!
