Episode Summary
Part A
Glorio and the others continue their journey after winning their first Dragon Ball, and decide to break for a rest. Kaiōshin says they should camp somewhere safe, but Panzy wants to take a bath and sleep in a real bed! She throws a bear hat on Goku’s head, saying no-one will recognize him now. This is actually enough to convince Glorio (even if only begrudgingly), so they’ll go ahead and do just that.
The group arrives at a tall building, itself situation atop a large, floating plateau. Goku is told to leave Nyoibō in the plane since it’s a bit conspicuous, and Kaiōshin mentions they should hide the Dragon Ball in a sack, as well. Panzy handles packing everything up, and they’re good to go.
Inside, the group gets a few glares as they walk toward the front desk. Glorio says they should all stay together in one large room — and get room service as well — so they can stay on their guard. Goku keeps itching at his end, and ultimately takes off the hat. Panzy and Kaiōshin are too busy chatting to notice fast enough, and by this point, some of the demons have definitely noticed. A pair over on the side — a round-ish demon one with a mohawk, and a bird-like demon with scrawny wings — assume that must be a Dragon Ball they have with them in the sack.
Panzy comes out from her bath and tells Goku to take one as well, since he’s all sweaty from fighting. Goku starts heading in, but explains back to Panzy that he didn’t bring a change of clothes. Panzy will loan some of hers. Goku doesn’t want her panties… but she doesn’t mean underwear! Goku comes out from the bath refreshed and wearing shorts and a cute bear shirt. Glorio and the others had a huge meal delivered in the meantime, so they start chowing down. As the camera pans over to the Dragon Ball sitting in its sack on a stool, the group suddenly hears a loud commotion downstairs. A wolf is throwing furniture all over the place and causing a ruckus. Kaiōshin rushes out of the room to see, while Goku and Panzy also casually stroll over. Even Glorio jumps up to see. Goku wonders if he should go beat them up when the wolf turns to look at him… but whistles instead, giving the signal for the bird demon to crash through the window and steal the Dragon Ball! Glorio is too slow on the draw, and even when Goku comes back in and flies out the window, he’s lost he culprit. Panzy isn’t worried, though, since she put a tracker on the Dragon Ball ahead of time! As they look at the device, it seems the Dragon Ball is directly up above them!
Higher up on the floating area, the “wolf” turns back into the round demon from earlier. The bird demon delivers the Dragon Ball, and the two start to make their plans… when Goku says from behind that it’s kind of pointless until they get all three. The demons agree and keep chatting since they can at least sell it… but who said that?! Goku once again casually strolls up and asks that they return the Dragon Ball. The one demon shape-shifts again and the two fly off. Goku cracks his knuckles and neck, and flies off in pursuit. The two demons play keep-away by throwing it back and forth, but Goku eventually gets in a hit and takes back the Dragon Ball. The two demons rush in to fight, but Glorio jumps in between them and forms lightning above with his fingertip, which he throws as a whip at the demons, swinging and launching them into the distance.
The Dragon Ball is safe with them again! Glorio offers a fist-bump to Panzy, who then checks back in with her dad about the current situation. They’ll be meeting up with Goku’s friends near Warp-sama the next day. Glorio asks if they’re also powerful, and Goku says they are indeed strong. Kaiōshin thinks they can’t be too careful, though, and wonders if they should go camp elsewhere after all that. Goku says that he got rest on the plane, so he’ll stay up and keep watch while everyone else sleeps. At first Goku is fine, scoping out the room and even performing some quick air punches… but eventually exhaustion gets the better of him, and despite some face slaps and eye peels, he’s out cold for the night. Thankfully nothing else happened overnight, and their plane is finally intact for once, so they’re ready to take off again. In their stole plane, they should get to Warp-sama the same day.
Meanwhile, Bulma and the others are stranded, with their own plane having been stolen!
Part B
Hybis makes a good point: they stole their plane, and someone stole it from them. It was probably the guys that Vegeta beat up the previous night…
… where, after picking up some food, Vegeta bumped into a demon, instigating a fight. Naturally Vegeta quickly puts them all down and carries on with his evening, but the demons clearly had a bone to pick. Hybis suggests they check in with Panzy to have her pick them up, so they’ll just have to wait around until then. In the meantime, Hybis suggests they play the Zombie Game: there’s a zombie forest nearby, and whoever eliminates the most zombies wins; if you get bitten and turn into a zombie, you’re disqualified. Bulma and Vegeta will pass… but Bulma notices a weird eye in Hybis’ belt that suddenly starts twirling around! He found it in the mountains a long time ago and put it on his belt. It’s very cool and impressive.
Meanwhile, Degesu takes a call, and tells the person on the other end to continue gathering information. Gomah asks what the latest information is, and Degesu is forced to disclose that the people on Earth they turned into children have entered the Demon Realm… and they’re after the Dragon Balls. Gomah laughs this off, but changes his tune when Degesu notes that they actually already got their first Dragon Ball yesterday. Gomah wonders what Degesu has been up to all this time! It seems they underestimated this group, who is now on their way to the Second Demon World for another Dragon Ball. Gomah fully loses his temper, and says he should have just wished for the Evil Third Eye from the start.
Glorio’s plane lands to meet Hybis and the others. Bulma makes her introductions to Panzy, introducing Vegeta and Piccolo as well. Panzy says she’s never seen a Namek before! Goku wonders where Kibito is, but Piccolo says he’s back standing watch at the temple on Earth. Vegeta mentions the Dragon Ball that Goku already won, and wants to get a move on with them. Their plane doesn’t have the space, though; they can’t get rid of all their luggage and rations. Panzy says she’ll have her dad get them another plane, so please wait just a little longer. Goku will keep working on the Dragon Balls, so they can go ahead and just go beat Gomah if they want. Piccolo figures they should have brought Kibito since he can teleport, which gets a reaction out of Bulma. Goku and the others are off… again! Piccolo can tell Goku is just preoccupied with fighting the Tamagami. Hybis wonders if they want to play the Zombie Game now, when they’re suddenly assaulted by a larger group of demons. It’s the gang from the previous night, now with extra friends for support. Hybis is just a simple guide, so he’ll be off to the side eating snacks. Without flinching, Vegeta lets an aura loose around him, ready to blow off some steam. Hybis prepares to open his bag, the demons prepare to fight… and they all rush in! Vegeta handily twirls around each and every attack, knocking out one demon after another. One horse demon with boxing gloves remains against Vegeta, and Piccolo knocks out a different demon holding a club on the sidelines. The horse demon looks over at Piccolo and prepares to fight, but Vegeta knocks him out from behind. Hybis says the fight was pretty fast; he only had time to eat two chips. Vegeta gets intel out of one of the demons that their plane is nearby, so they’ll be able to take off soon.
Meanwhile to the meanwhile, Arinsu and Marba are still at work cooking up their new Majin. It’s almost ready! Marba says she used to have enough Saibaimen seeds that she could sell them to outsiders, but she’s down to her last two. Arinsu isn’t convinced things will work out right from the start, so she recommends they only use one. Marba wonders if Arinsu doesn’t trust her, but Arinsu repeats that Marba said Boo was just a fluke, didn’t she? Anyway, Arinsu is given one seed to plant… but not too far down; just about five centimeters is enough. It would increase the amount of the Boo presence, but they won’t be able to control it. Arinsu takes a deep breath, plants and covers the seed, and waters it. The cauldron explodes with green energy! Using a Saibaiman as the base and various monsters in the mix as well, with this essence of Boo to create it… he’s Majin Koo! Arinsu is eager to test him out, and immediately commands him to go defeat Tamagami Number One and get the Dragon Ball! Marba is shocked that Arinsu wants to jump right to defeating a Tamagami, but if their new Majin isn’t even that strong, what’s the point? Koo complies!

Episode Notes
- Keeping up with the series’ ongoing inconsistency between formal episode title cards and titles written in the lower corner overtop footage, episode 9 overlays the title atop footage.
- While not perfectly reconciling with it (perhaps yet?), this episode’s exposition about the Saibaimen seems largely based on and adapted from information franchise creator Akira Toriyama first delivered in the “Saiyan Special Q&A” interview which was printed in a supplemental booklet accompanying the January 2018 issue of Shueisha’s Saikyo Jump magazine (released in December 2017):
Are the Saibaimen a Saiyan invention?
The Saibaimen are one of the Saiyans’ classic weapons. But the Saiyans didn’t invent them; rather, they are a lifeform discovered on a certain planet. Saibaimen are handy since they can fight on their own, but they are also an extremely rare and valuable item since harvesting their bulbs is difficult, so not everyone gets to use them. Plus they’re so wild they might attack you, so only a select few warriors are capable of handling them. This 2017 information contradicts information given in the seventh Daizenshuu, which states that a memo from Akira Toriyama to the anime staff containing background information on the Saibaimen noted that that they were created by a Saiyan scientist using biotechnology.
Character & Location Names
-
Tamagami Number One (タマガミ・ナンバー・ワン; tamagami nanbā wan)
From the start, the “Tamagami” protecting the Demon Realm Dragon Balls have been written in the closed captions and now listed in the voice credits in katakana as タマガミ (tamagami). This is in contrast to what could have been written with kanji with distinct character meanings as perhaps 玉神 (“Ball Gods” or “Orb Guardians”). As with Tamagami Number Three, this first Tamagami — presumably the one we saw Neva speak to at the beginning of the series — is referred to with the actual English words “Number One” for a name. -
Saibaiman (栽培マン; saibaiman)
The little green “Saibaimen” are referred to by name, originally seen as planted on Earth following the arrival of Nappa and Vegeta. The creatures’ name is broken down into the Japanese word for “cultivation” (栽培; saibai) and the English word “man” (マン; man). This name has historically been erroneously adapted (missing an “i”) as “Saibaman” in FUNimation’s Dragon Ball Z English dub, while it has been faithfully localized as “Culitvars” in Viz’s English translation of the Dragon Ball manga. The winds have shifted toward an accurate “Saibaiman” adaptation in recent years, including in the recent video game Dragon Ball Z: Sparking! Zero. -
Majin Koo (魔人クウ; majin koo)
The new creation Majin Koo seems to take the name “Boo” and shift the consonant sound from a bu to a ku. If this is the case, it would be similar to the name “Bee” for Boo’s dog friend, which shifted the vowel sounds from -uu to -ee. Since we go with “Boo” for a name spelling (as Bibbidi, Bobbidi, and Boo all match their exact katakana spellings from the same source words in the Cinderella song in Japanese), we have gone with a spelling of “Koo” for this new character. The official simulcast English subtitles go with a spelling of “Kuu” (presumably to match their FUNimation-English-dub-sourced spelling of “Buu”).
Translation & Language
-
Zombie Game (ゾンビゲーム; zonbi gēmu)
The “Zombie Game” that Hybis suggests they play is spoken aloud in Japanese as the English words “zombie game”. -
Zombie Forest (ゾンビの森; zonbi no mori)
The “Zombie Forest” nearby is referred to with the Japanese word for “forest” (森; mori). -
YES (イエス; iesu)
One of the demons responds back to Vegeta using the English word “yes”.
