Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO is a fighting game developed by Spike Chunsoft and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment for the Sony PlayStation 5, Microsoft Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam), released 10 October 2024 in Japan and 11 October 2024 internationally. The game was later released on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 14 November 2025.
Sparking! ZERO is currently the latest entry in the Sparking! series of Dragon Ball fighting games, released internationally as "Budokai Tenkaichi" titles.
Gameplay
Battles in Sparking! ZERO take place in 3D arenas with an over-the-shoulder camera angle. They are played in a one-on-one format, between teams of one to five characters that can be swapped out during battle. Some characters can also transform or fuse during battle, when the required conditions are met.
Game Modes
- Episode Battle: A story mode featuring eight selectable point-of-view characters; Son Goku, Vegeta, Son Gohan, Piccolo, Future Trunks, Freeza, Goku Black, and Jiren. The "Super Limit-Breaking NEO" update added Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Kuririn, and Cell as point-of-view characters.
- Custom Battle: A mode in which players can create their own custom story scenarios and share them online.
- Battle: Basic battles, either online or offline, played against other players or the CPU.
- Super Training: Practice playing the game through tutorials or a training mode.
- World Tournament: Fight battles in a tournament setting, either online or offline. Tournament types include Tenka'ichi Budōkai, Cell Games, Afterlife Tournament, God of Destruction Invitational Tournament, Tournament of Power, and Yamcha Games, each featuring different rules.
- Mission 100: A mode featuring one hundred battles, each of them with a curated theme. "Namekian Warriors", for example, pits the player against a team consisting of Piccolo, Nail, and Slug. Many of these battles closely match the ones found in Sparking! METEOR's Mission 100 mode. This mode was added to the Sony PlayStation 5, Microsoft Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam) versions of Sparking! ZERO in a free update 26 January 2026, while updates for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 versions were released on a delayed schedule.[1]
- Survival Mode: An endurance challenge in which the player attempts to survive against all of the game's playable characters in succession. This mode was added to the Sony PlayStation 5, Microsoft Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam) versions of Sparking! ZERO in a free update 21 April 2026, while updates for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 versions were released on a delayed schedule.[2]
- Limit Breaker Journey: A mode in which a character's stats can be increased through branching scenarios, battles, and events. This enhanced character can then be used in other game modes. This mode was added to the Sony PlayStation 5, Microsoft Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam) versions of Sparking! ZERO as downloadable content 30 July 2026, while updates for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 versions were released on a delayed schedule.[3]
