The year is off to a strange start! Dragon Ball Kai is (finally?!) coming back, more books than you can shake a stick at are due out around the same time, and Dragon Ball Heroes continues its stranglehold on the youth of Japan. If you somehow fell asleep in 1997 and just woke back up, you could be forgiven for not realizing there was actually a break for the franchise for a little while there.

After a few weeks’ break from podcasting, we return to catch up on some of these biggest news stories. How does the return of Kai figure in to financial projections for the various companies? Is the supposed alternate/Ocean dub of Kai actually still on the way? What is going on with Battle of Z these days? How do I go about playing Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn with the Kanzenshuu community? All these questions and more coming to your ears right now!

SHOW DESCRIPTION:
Episode #0356! VegettoEX and Hujio discuss the impending return of “Dragon Ball Kai” and what this means for the franchise’s financial figures in the coming year. The theoretical alternate Ocean English dub of “Kai” gets some attention, as does the wealth of books coming our way this April on both sides of the sea. “Who’s That Character?” and website content teases wrap up the show!

The Dragon Ball theme songs set for the DVD include:

Each of the Dragon Ball opening themes featured multiple animation updates as their respective series continued onward, so it will be interesting to see which versions are selected for the DVD.

A total of 45 theme songs representing 31 series are set for inclusion with Dragon Ball having the most representation (followed by Kinnikuman with four songs). Both opening theme songs from the original TV adaptation of Dr. Slump, Akira Toriyama’s series prior to Dragon Ball, will also be included.

J Anime TV Theme Complete Works will see its release in Japan 26 March 2014 with an MSRP of ¥6,090. Amazon Japan is currently offering the DVD for a pre-order price of ¥4,892.

Announced in today’s April 2014 issue of V-Jump in Japan, as a part of the upcoming mid-March 2014 “JM3” (Ja’aku Ryū Misshon / “Evil Dragon Mission”) update to the card-based arcade game Dragon Ball Heroes, Vegetto will be receiving his own Super Saiyan 3 transformation. As the battle, system, and characters all reach new heights in “JM3”, so will the mightiest fused father!

Vegetto is the fusion of Son Goku (“Kakarrot”) and Vegeta with the Potara earrings from the tail-end of the Majin Boo story arc. Within the Dragon Ball series itself, the character powered up to “Super Vegetto”. The character is described in Daizenshuu 7 / Chōzenshú 4:

As he is the fusion of two Saiyans, there is not all that much change in appearance. Like Goku’s face combined with Vegeta’s hairstyle. Possessing Vegeta’s calm battle logic and Goku’s pure fighting sense, there is no doubt that he has attained a strength rating surpassing Super Saiyan 3. He is able to transform from his normal state into Super Saiyan. He has traits such as his power remaining the same even when his form changes. He was born only once, and fought with Majin Boo.

Next month’s May 2014 issue of V-Jump (due out 20 March 2014) will include a Super Saiyan 3 Vegetto bonus card for the game.

Gogeta, the fusion of the same characters using the dance method who first debuted in Dragon Ball Z Movie 12 back in 1995 (as well as a Super Saiyan 4 in Dragon Ball GT‘s 60th episode), also received a Super Saiyan 3 transformation in Dragon Ball Heroes last year.

Megahouse has been reviving older figures under the “Capsule R” line in Japan for quite some time, most notably back in early 2013 to tie-in with the impending theatrical release of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods.

The latest line to be revealed comes under the “Astonishing Majin Boo Arc” (驚愕の魔人ブウ編 Kyōgaku no Majin Bū-hen) title:

The figures, each pulling their naming inspiration from Dragon Ball Z episode titles during the Majin Boo arc, include:

  • 未来をつかめ (Mirai o Tsukame / Seize the Future)
Son Goku powering up into Super Saiyan 3
  • 壮絶パワー!!究極を超えるベジット (Sōzetsu Pawā! ! Kyūkyoku o Koeru Bejitto / Magnificent Power!! Vegetto Surpasses the Ultimate)
Super Vegetto using his ki sword against Pure Evil Majin Boo
  • でっかい希望!フュージョン (Dekkai Kibō! Fu~yūjon / Enormous Hope! Fusion)
Son Goku and Piccolo demonstrating the fusion dance
  • 破壊王子ベジータ復活!! (Hakai Ōji Bejīta Fukkatsu! ! / Vegeta, the Prince of Destruction, is Revived!!)
Majin Vegeta destroying the Tenka’ichi Budōkai stands
  • 最終兵器始動 (Saishū Heiki Shidō / The Final Weapon is Engaged)
Mr. Satan bathing his new friend Majin Boo
  • ブウの中のブウとブウ (Bū no Naka no Bū to Bū / Boo and Boo Inside Boo)
Son Goku and Vegeta split back apart inside the body of Pure Evil Majin Boo
  • 超ゴテンクス3 (Chō Gotenkusu 3 / Super Gotenks 3)
Gotenks, the fusion of Son Goten and Trunks, demonstrating his Super Saiyan 3 transformation

As with the previous “Capsule R” lines, each capsule contains a piece that can be added together to form one final figure: Bobbidi with his minions Demon King Dabra and Pui-Pui.

A seven-pack is available for ¥5,670 MSRP from CDJapan — be sure to note that although there are seven distinct pieces and seven come in each pack for sale, you are not guaranteed to receive each individual figure in your pack. Pre-orders officially open today with a deadline of 30 March 2014. The figures will officially release in June.

The release of these figures is clearly timed with the upcoming continuation of Dragon Ball Kai into the Majin Boo story arc beginning this April in Japan.

The third of four promised installments for the “Vomic” — “Voiced Comic” — of Akira Toriyama’s Jaco the Galactic Patrolman is now online courtesy of Shueisha.

The third “Vomic” covers the final eight pages of the first chapter of the series. It has been completely colorized and features slight background music and sound effects. Issei Futamata and Tsubasa Yonaga lend their voices to Omori and Jaco, respectively.

Jaco the Galactic Patrolman was an 11-chapter manga series by Akira Toriyama that ran from the 2013 #33-44 issues of Weekly Shōnen Jump in Japan, and also saw a simultaneous digital release in English by Viz. Originally teased by Shueisha as the “shocking revival of Dragon Ball!!”, by the series’ completion it became clear that it was indeed a true prequel to Dragon Ball.

A collected release of the manga was originally due out in Japan this past January, but was delayed to 04 April 2014 and will include some bonus material such as the reveal of Goku’s mother, Gine. Alongside a regular edition of the collected manga will be a “Super Elite” version at a slightly-higher price point.

With the launch of the April 2014 issue of V-Jump providing the first official confirmation of Dragon Ball Kai‘s continuation into the Majin Boo story arc, the official Japanese website has also been updated! As of right now it is simply a splash page, with the previous iteration still available.

Dragon Ball Kai, the “refreshed” version of the Dragon Ball Z TV series originally created for its 20th anniversary in 2009, officially kicks off into a new era 06 April 2014 in Japan on Fuji TV at 9:00 a.m. It will be reclaiming its spot in the “Dream 9” block — taking it back from Toriko — alongside One Piece.

The UK branch of Bandai Namco announced today that the Vita version of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z will be receiving an update to enable the Japanese voice cast in the game. The Vita version, released in some territories as download-only, also only received the English voice cast outside of Japan. The console version (PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360) features both the original Japanese and English voice casts by default already included as a part of the base purchase.

There is no word just yet on whether or not this will be a free or paid update. Furthermore, right now this announcement is only coming from the UK branch of the company. We have inquired with the North American branch regarding any plans they may have and will update this post accordingly with any further information we receive.

Thanks to dbboxkaifan for the heads-up.

Additionally, forum user Sshadow5001 posted this morning that they were able to purchase the Japanese paid downloadable content — Super Saiyan Bardock and Super Vegetto available at ¥300 a pop — and the content loaded properly into their European copy of the game on the Xbox 360. Downloadable content is generally region-restricted even when the base game is not, so this is a curious development. If any readers in other countries with other consoles are willing to bite the bullet and test things out, we would be happy to report your results!
