Kakunsa is a fictional character in the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Super and its companion manga series written by Toyotarō. Kakunsa makes her debut in Dragon Ball Super Episode 96, broadcast on 25 June 2017 on Fuji TV, as a member of the Universe 2 team.

Biography

Kakunsa transforms into a beast-like warrior, and attacks wildly by clawing and biting. In the Tournament of Power, she is dropped out of the ring by No. 17's intense roundhouse kick.[1][2]

Tournament of Power

Kakunsa's character design for the Tournament of Power.[1]

Sanka-Ku is one of the ten warriors chosen to represent Universe 2 in the Tournament of Power. She is first seen when the Great Priest transports the Universe 2 team to the World of Void and they are introduced to the other teams.[3] When the tournament begins, Narirama of Universe 3 goes into his Super Survival Mode and knocks Sanka and the other members of the Maiden Squadron flying. Helles is offended; it is not beautiful to attack the maidens before they transform.[4] After this, Sanka lays low and is not seen again until Brianne de Chateau decides it is time for the Maiden Squadron to transform.

Brianne calls for Sous and Sanka-Ku, telling them it is time to show their power. Then she calls for the attention of the other warriors, and Jimizu, Zirloin, Bikal, Rabanra, and Zarbuto stop what they are doing to attend her. (It is unknown why the other Universe 2 fighters, Prum and Harmira, did not join them.) As Sanka and Sous join Brianne on a high rock, Goku, who was looking for Jiren, stops to see what is happening. They also have the attention of Kuririn, who is in the stands. Brianne asks the girls if they are ready, and they are; Sanka approves of the high ground for their performance. Peru roots in anticipation, and Helles stands to announce that it is time for lovely flowers to bloom on the battlefield. Beerus and Champa wonder what is going on. Vegeta asks them what this is all about.

Brianne introduces herself, followed by Sanka and Sous, and their Universe 2 teammates join them in a call-and-response ritual. "Let it bloom. Let it ring. The song of love and victory!"/"The song of love and victory!" Brianne calls "Formation!" and begins her transformation sequence, but before her actual transformation begins, Sanka and Sous begin their sequences as well. Sanka chants: "Sansan! Kakkun! San-kakkun!" as she prepares to transform.

The Maiden Squadron transformation is interrupted by No. 17.[2]

Goku wonders if they are going to power up, but Beerus thinks it looks more like a recital than powering up. Helles tells him to be silent; this ritual represents the fighting spirit of the Universe 2 warriors. The maidens all drift, eyes closed, as they gather their power, and the Omni-Kings are enthralled, but then suddenly they are interrupted by a blast from No. 17. Peru is horrified; Helles demands to know who has done this. Goku asks No. 17 if he did it; No. 17 says they were wide open, and asks if there is a problem. Goku explains that they were going to transform.

The disheveled maidens rush in to angrily confront No. 17; Brianne tells him that the entire process of their transformation has meaning; how could he interrupt it? Toppo chimes in to support the maidens; a warrior's pose is justice, and No. 17's interruption was disrespectful. Goku pleads with No. 17 to allow them to transform, so he concedes and walks away. Brianne thanks Toppo for his understanding, but warns him that they will not hold back. Toppo says that is fine, and Goku tells them to show their full power. No. 17 takes a seat on a rock to watch, and the girls jump back up on their high rock. Beerus is frustrated with Goku; he is supposed to eliminate enemies before they reach full power. Kuririn says that is just how Goku is.

Helles announces the ritual again, and Beerus and Champa cannot believe they are starting over from the beginning. Everything is repeated exactly as it was before, except that this time they successfully transform into Ribrianne, Kakunsa, and Roasie. Kakunsa concludes her transformation with the words: "The thunder of the wild! The roar of love!"

Helles proclaims that this is the highest form of Universe 2's warriors; their mortal level might not be high enough, but their love level is the highest in all the universes. The Omni-Kings, the participating Universe 2 members, and Peru all celebrate; Peru thinks they are beautiful, but Kuririn thinks they were cuter before. Whis explains that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and each universe is different; indeed, the male Universe 10 warriors on the sidelines are enjoying the spectacle, and from Universe 11, Tupper, Zoire, Toppo, and Dispo are blushing. Goku adopts a battle stance, and Vegeta demands to see their power.

Ribrianne starts off with an attack called Love; all three maidens contribute, and they send hearts crashing all around the arena; Goku sniffs the air, and Freeza thinks the odor is foul. Obni is overcome by emotions, and Toppo warns Dispo not to inhale. Helles explains that this is the light of love; warriors ensnared by its aroma will be consumed. Rumoosh frantically tries to smack his warriors in the stands out of their stupor; only Rylibeu seems unaffected. Shin wonders whether Goku and the others will be okay, but Whis says they are all stoic and they seem to be holding up, even the Turtle Hermit, who was the one they would have had to worry about the most. Muten Rōshi says that his training with Pu'er is paying off, and Tenshinhan is proud of him. The Universe 7 defensive group scatters to fight independently.

The entire arena is covered in the fog of the Love attack. Beerus thinks Universe 2 was hiding a real nuisance; Champa says that, despite their bizarre appearances, they have shaken up the entire tournament. Helles declares that this is the point. Jiren moves in to put an end to the attack, but Vegeta beats him to the punch. Ribrianne then commands Universe 2 to fight.

Kakunsa attacks No. 17 with claws and teeth; Helles explains that she is a beast warrior with animal instincts. She is a hunter targeting prey, and she brings them down with elegance. Kakunsa tells No. 17 that he is her quarry; she will make him pay for interrupting their transformation. Kuririn and the Elder Kaiōshin note that she makes good use of the rubble for footing. Whis finds her fighting style to be truly wild; Helles warns that this terrain is perfect for her special abilities. Dodging her is useless; she will attack with unparalleled endurance until she wears down her prey.

Kakunsa and Bikal share a tender moment in Dragon Ball Super Episode 102.

Kakunsa thinks she is wearing him down; she goes for the finishing move, and No. 17 traps her with a Barrier. She realizes that he was just pretending to be exhausted. He uses the barrier to spin her around and then jumps up, kicking her out of the ring, but Bikal flies up to save her, using the advantage of her wings to propel Kakunsa back into the arena. Kakunsa uses the force of her rebound to attack No. 17. She is profoundly grateful to Bikal for saving her, but Bikal insists it was only her duty to Kakunsa-sama. They embrace, and Peru and Helles are overcome by this display of love.

As No. 17 recovers from Kakunsa's attack. No. 18 asks him if he needs help. He tells her he is fine; Kakunsa just reminded him of the beasts he cares for on his island, so he let his guard down. He will get serious now. Bikal tells Kakunsa she is going to go help their other teammates, but No. 17 jumps up to attack her, kicking her directly into the stands. The Great Priest announces Bikal's elimination, and Kakunsa goes after No. 17 in a rage, but he is prepared for her. He explains that he had to take care of Bikal first because of her wings. Kakunsa continues to attack blinded by rage until Ribrianne drops in to offer her assistance. Kakunsa tells her that No. 17 is her prey; she must avenge Bikal. Ribrianne is touched by her love and wishes her luck. No. 17 attacks her with the same blast he used to interrupt their transformation; Kakunsa thinks he is naive for believing that would work on her while she is not transforming, but he uses the attack to propel himself onto the light source above the arena. Champa demands to know whether this is allowed, but the Omni-Kings declare it safe. No. 17 tells Kakunsa that her fighting style was worth studying and blasts her out of the arena. The Great Priest announces Kakunsa's elimination, and the Omni-Kings tap her out on their GodPads. Ribrianne approaches No. 17 and promises to avenge Kakunsa and Bikal.[2]

Later, as Ribrianne fights Goku, Roasie and Kakunsa hold up glowsticks to send love to Ribrianne, which helps her transform into Super Ribrianne.[5] When Goku is exhausted after defeating Kafla, Helles speaks to Ribrianne and Roasie telepathically, telling them she has a secret strategy for Universe 2. Helles tells them to take Goku out, and Sanka cheers them on. Nos. 17 and 18 interfere to protect Goku, so Roasie asks Ribrianne if she can have No. 17 to avenge Kakunsa, and Ribrianne agrees. Invoking Kakunsa's name, Rozie attacks No. 17, but he eliminates her. No. 18 also defeats Ribrianne, but when she loses her transformation and falls to the ground as Brianne de Chateau, she traps No. 18 with Big Amour. Sanka, the gods of Universe 2, and their other eliminated warriors use their glowsticks to give Brianne more power until she transforms into a giant Super Ribrianne. When Ribrianne is eliminated by No. 18, Sous and Sanka comfort her. Brianne sees No. 18 smiling at Kuririn, and a tear falls from her eye. She acknowledges with a smile that there might be a love out there that they don't yet understand, and the other maidens agree.[6]

Back in Universe 2, the female-presenting warriors from Brianne's audition—one with her arm in a sling, the other with a bandage on her face—are watching the tournament in a large crowd where people are wearing t-shirts featuring their favorite members of the team, including Roasie. They are distressed that their goddess Ribrianne has fallen, and worry that their universe is finished. Brianne assures them that it is not over yet, and they call out to her. The Elder Kaiōshin and Whis are surprised that Universe 2 was so bold as to broadcast the tournament back home, when normally it would cause mass hysteria. Brianne tells them that even though she was defeated, the light of love has not yet been lost, and she encourages everyone to cheer on the remaining warriors all the way to the end.

Zirloin, Rabanra, and Zarbuto surround Goku, while Brianne rallies the Universe 2 people to raise their glowsticks in support. The warriors absorb the love of their universe, and Brianne tells the men to recite the incantation of love. The men mimic the transformation ritual of the Maiden Squadron; Zirloin transforms in the aspect of Ribrianne, Rabanra as Kakunsa, and Zarbuto as Roasie. Helles pronounces a miracle; here, a new beauty has been born. Nos. 17 and 18 join Goku, and the fight begins. The men have actually taken on the maidens' power; Zirloin explains to Goku that this is the power of love. Eventually, they create a Pretty Black Hole, an attack that not even the Maiden Squadron could handle. Under its weight, Goku finally gets the "power of love", but he powers up to Super Saiyan Blue and dispels the attack with a Kamehameha.

The last Universe 2 members are eliminated, and the Great Priest announces that they will be erased. Peru congratulates the men for a job well done, and back home, the inhabitants of Universe 2 wave their glowsticks. Helles tells them to accept their fate gracefully and beautifully. Brianne calls "Formation!", and as Ribrianne, she thanks everyone for cheering them on. Kakunsa tells them that even if Universe 2 is erased, their love will live on inside of them. Roasie tells them to finish it off with the usual: Love! Ribrianne tells everyone "Bye-Bye!", and they all disappear. No. 18 is amazed they were like that until the end, and thinks that after everything, they were cool.[7]

When No. 17 uses the Super Dragon Balls to restore all of the destroyed universes, Sanka-Ku is seen with Helles, Peru, and the rest of the team back at home in Universe 2.[8]

Name

Kakunsa's name (Sanka-Ku) is likely derived from the Japanese term for chuck ribs (三角バラ/sankaku bara), a cut of beef taken from the chuck area of cattle, characterized by its strong marbling. In Japan the chuck rib represents the first to sixth bone portions of the shoulder roast cut into triangles.[9]

Performance

Kakunsa is voiced by Ryōko Shiraishi in her first credited Dragon Ball role. In the FUNimation dub, Ribrianne is voiced by Morgan Berry, also in her first credited franchise role.
