Episode Summary

Opening

When seven magic Dragon Balls are collected and the password is recited, a dragon named Shenlong appears to grant the summoner any wish.

Son Goku is an incredible warrior who lived in the mountains as a child, searched for the Dragon Balls while going on many adventures, and grew into adulthood with his new friends.

One day a vicious battle race called the Saiyans arrived on Earth — it seems that Goku was himself a Saiyan that had been sent to Earth as an infant. Saiyans maintain a youthful body for much of their lives.

Throughout his life, Goku continued to face terrifying enemies and overcome these challenges to protect Earth. Now the Earth faces a new threat…

Part A

The group’s ship crashes, with the engine giving out due to the overloaded luggage. Kaiōshin asks what exactly they were carrying, so Panzy details it was a bunch of stuff for emergencies: repair equipment, camping equipment, medical supplies, towels, toilet paper… perhaps it was a bit too much.

Panzy recalls that Goku called the other guy something like “shin-sama” before; what was that? Kaiōshin and Goku explain that there are a bunch of gods in their universe called “Kaiō” and above them is Kaiōshin-sama here! Panzy says he was right to leave the Demon Realm for such a large place, and wonders if Kaiōshin makes good money. He does not.

Goku’s stomach acts up, and he gets Glorio’s attention by using the wrong name again. Glorio is convinced Goku is doing this on purpose, but it doesn’t seem to be the case. Anyway, Goku needs to take a dump. Panzy wonders why he didn’t go back at the castle, but Goku says it suddenly came on. He’ll be right back, but does Panzy have any toilet paper? Goku gets smacked in the face with a roll and wanders off to do his business.

One of the military ships suddenly appears in the sky, spotting the group down below. Glorio tells them to avoid conflict. The military notices that two of them aren’t wearing collars, and asks where they’re from. Glorio says he’s from the first, and Kaiōshin says he’s from the second. The girl begrudgingly shows her collar and submits it for scanning. Kaiōshin says they’re traveling together, and asked her to be their guide. This is a weird story, but they ask if the group has seen a spiky-haired kid with a red stick, and if so, it’s worth ten gold coins. The military ship takes off, and Goku emerges from behind a big plant. Kaiōshin asks Goku if he can pin his hair down, but Goku says it’s too resilient for that.

The group is finally able to take off again, and Panzy resumes her questions, starting with Glinds and if they’re born from trees. Kaiōshin says this is true: Glinds are born once every few centuries from the Glind Tree. Goku wonders if he’s like a plant, and that’s why he doesn’t eat, and instead only drinks liquids. Panzy then figures that Degesu is Kaiōshin’s brother, which Kaiōshin confirms; he was born from the same tree when Kaiōshin was 216. Goku wonders if that makes everyone brothers, including Kibito and the Elder Kaiōshin. This is not true, however, since there are five Glind Trees. Panzy wonders why Degesu stayed in the Demon Realm instead of leaving with the others. Kaiōshin explains that Degesu is very ambitious and didn’t get along with the other Glinds. Panzy keeps the questions coming, and asks about the genius scientist Glind woman. Kaiōshin says that’s Arinsu, his older sister. However, Glinds don’t exactly have genders, so they’re not really men or women. Arinsu has always been a bit of an ambitious mad scientist who chose the excitement of the Demon Realm instead of leaving. Goku wonders if all of Kaiōshin’s siblings are problematic; Glorio squints a bit and the group keep flying over the mountains below.

Goku notices how the Demon World is a little light even at night. This is because the Third Demon World has two suns. Panzy asks Glorio if he wants her to take over piloting, but no, they need to get some rest; they should eat and sleep while they can. There are no hotels around here, so they’ll hole up in a cave. They won’t be able to take a shower, though, and they left their camping gear back where they crash landed before! Goku says they can skip a shower; he does it all the time.

The group light a fire in a cave and chow down on canned food; Kaiōshin finds it less than appealing. Goku passes out, and the rest of the group keep chatting. Glorio is supposed to be from the first Demon World, but he looks like he’s from the third; he explains he was hired by someone there. When pressed on who hired him, Glorio continues to avoid directly answering. Kaiōshin presses on, asking why Glorio wants to defeat King Gomah. It’s because he’s an evil person who makes all of the demons suffer, of course. Glorio seems to have a strong sense of justice.

As the rest of the group sleeps, Glorio sneaks out to take a phone call with none other than Arinsu. Things seem to be going smoothly! Glorio quietly walks back in to the cave, and Kaiōshin pops open a single eye as Glorio walks by.

Sometime later after Glorio falls asleep, the group is awoken by a loud sound and terrible smell (and it’s not Goku). A giant beast starts stomping its way toward them from deeper in the cave!

Part B

The beast says he was going to hunt for food, but food has come right to him! Goku says it’s just a cow, though. He’s not a cow! He walks on two feet and no cow is this big! He’s a minotaur! Goku thinks that’s a pretty cool name. The minotaur is thankful but still angry and ready to eat. Goku remains confused. Glorio says he’ll take care of the beast, and tells him to step outside, but Goku says he’ll handle it. Glorio says Goku is being arrogant; does he really think he’s so much stronger? Goku thinks so. Glorio challenges Goku.

The minotaur watches from behind Kaiōshin and Panzy as Glorio and Goku square off. Glorio doesn’t know how amazing Goku was, but he’s a child now, so it should be a good fight. Goku says he’ll only fight with one arm! Panzy says they’re being stupid, and the minotaur realizes he’s being ignored…

Glorio rushes in, but Goku blocks and dodges everything he throws. Goku actually misses a punch, but Kaiōshin says he’s barely gotten started. Glorio is better than Goku thought! Glorio points toward the sky and begins to form lightning around him, which he says is magic. He tosses it toward Goku, who dodges into the sky, looking down at the singed crater below. Kaiōshin yells for Goku to take this more seriously and show him just how strong Glorio is!

Goku twirls Nyoibō around and rushes in for a second round. Glorio continues to form lightning, this time throwing from both hands, but Goku jets in and smacks Glorio into a nearby mountain. Glorio’s lightning in turn then knocks Nyoibō away as he recovers. Glorio starts to form a larger attack from a single hand, and Goku gets an idea. A golden aura surrounds Goku, who then turns Super Saiyan! Everyone but Kaiōshin is shocked at what they see, but Glorio lets loose with his attack anyway. Goku stands firm, and at the last moment throws his fingers forward to disperse the blast completely. Glorio, knowing he’s already defeated, has it confirmed when Goku suddenly appears behind him with a palm to his back.

Goku returns to his normal form, and explains that it’s called “Super Saiyan”; he’s glad he can still do that in his child form. Glorio asks if Goku has any other special skills; of course he does. As Panzy expresses her awe over Goku’s “magic” (which isn’t actually magic), the minotaur tries to tiptoe away… but Goku apologies for the wait, and is ready to fight! The minotaur spins a tale about having actually already gotten his fill from a giant beast last night, so it’s a good thing he’s actually just going to go back to bed now. Without paying him any real mind, the group decides it’s time to take off again… but Goku needs to poop again, first.

Back on Earth, Vegeta is lifting weights while Bulma finishes up work on the other plane. Kibito will guide them to the Demon Realm, so they should hurry up to go catch up with Kaiōshin and help the others!

Bulma and Popo watch as Vegeta, Piccolo, and Kibito prepare to take off… only for the plane to sound an alarm and crash right back down.

Episode Notes

  • Keeping up with the series’ ongoing inconsistency between formal episode title cards and titles written in the lower corner overtop footage, episode 6 has a separate title card.
  • This episode’s exposition about the Kaiōshin — including their birth from a tree, gender identity, and more — is largely based and expanded on information franchise creator Akira Toriyama first delivered in his second “The Truth About the Dragon Ball Manga” interview series from 2009’s Dragon Ball Super Exciting Guide: Character Volume.

How did you come up with the ball-like cosmos?
I think it’s something I came up with so both I and the readers would be able to grasp the atmosphere of it easily. The big ball in the center is the world known as “this life” and “the afterlife,” and the one who watches over it from outside is Kaiōshin. Only, at the bottom, as though in opposition, a Makaiōshin exists, and governs evil. (Although right now, Kaiōshin’s power appears to be greater.)

    Is Kaiō-sama a hereditary position?
Inside the big ball I mentioned before, there is a planet, called the World Core [Kaishin-sei] where the Kaiō are born and raised. It’s a world like a gigantic Planet Kaiō, and Kaiō-sama and his peers are born as Core People [Shin-jin] from the fruit of the World Core’s giant World Tree [Kaiju]. The planet’s population is about 80. Core People are neither male nor female, and their average lifespan is said to be about 75,000 years. At a castle that’s like a school, they learn a variety of things, and live an easygoing life; however, if a Kaiō dies on one of the Kaiō Planets, the next Kaiō is chosen from among them by lottery. However, a Kaiōshin is chosen only from Core People who are born from a special golden fruit, which rarely occurs. In addition, there are occasionally delinquent Core People with evil hearts; these ones fall under the Makaiō.

Translation & Language

  • The “Glind Tree” is spoken as グリンドの木 (gurindo no ki) in Japanese.
  • Goku thinks the beast is a “cow” (; ushi), but he is actually a “minotaur” (ミノタウロス; minotaurosu).

Staff & Cast

  • Fumihiko Tachiki, a veteran of the voice acting industry, finally makes his Dragon Ball franchise debut as the minotaur.

Animation Alterations

Various scenes were altered in composition, special effects, and/or for content between initial trailers and the final episode broadcast. These include (but are not limited to) the following scenes. The initial trailer scenes are shown below, which you can hover over to view the scene as it was eventually seen within the episode.

  • Doctor Arinsu is more obscured in the shadows (and the window on the left has additional framing/beams) in the final broadcast episode compared to the trailer.

  • The lighting from Goku’s Super Saiyan transformation aura obscures less of the details in the surrounding rocks in the final broadcast episode compared to the trailer.

  • The lighting around Goku after he disperses Glorio’s attack is more pronounced in the final broadcast episode compared to the trailer.
