When Maximum the Hormone released their Tsume Tsume Tsume / “F” CD single in 2008, no-one at the time could have predicted a future where the song would become an official part of Dragon Ball music history… and yet here we are in 2015 with the song having directly inspired Akira Toriyama to create Dragon Ball Z: Revival of “F”:

This time, Freeza will be revived!
The “F” stands for “Freeza”.
This is because it’s an idea that came to me in a flash after I listened to a song called “F” by Maximum the Hormone, whom I had been introduced to by a friend, back when I was fretting over what to do about the story for the next movie.
“F” is a song that sings about Freeza in a vulgar-yet-cool way.
I remembered how, back then, they told me, “Sorry, but we went ahead and sang about Freeza without asking”.
Aha! So that’s what I could do!

As we approach the movie’s formal, wide release in Japan, we thought it appropriate to dive back into the band’s comments on the song.

Liner notes in their original 2008 CD single begin to paint a much larger picture about the song’s background, with Freeza and the Namek story arc providing a metaphorical backdrop for real-world politics and current events:

Now then, as for just what the “F” in the title “F” stands for,
I bet there are a lot of people who realized it from looking at the lyrics.
However, it’s not that this is simply a song about “that manga”.
It’s an “F” with a much, much deeper meaning.
There is great significance in the fact that I narrowed the target to that comic’s “Planet Namek arc”.
In the comic, numerous conflicts arose over the “wish-granting orbs” on that planet,
and many of its innocent inhabitants, who had been living peacefully, were killed.

The band provided more background information on the song for their 2013 full-length album Yoshū Fukushū, along with — in retrospect — some hilariously-prophetic commentary:

We’ve performed the song in front of Sensei and gotten a Freeza autograph from him, so why don’t we go ahead have them make this song the main theme the next time Dragon Ball‘s made into a movie?!

Finally, an update on the song would not be complete without a translation of its lyrics!

As we enter the final stretch for the official blog to promote Dragon Ball Z: Revival of “F”, back on March 31st it updated with a few words from the voice of Jaco, Hanae Natsuki.  Bulma’s so excited, she apparently forgets how many days are left until the movie, saying 10 instead of 18:

Hey, Bulma here!
Just 10 [sic] days left until the premiere!
Today we’ve got a comment from Hanae Natsuki! He’s voicing Jaco, a character who’s making his Dragon Ball debut in this film!

I’ve been watching and reading Dragon Ball since I was little, so I never imagined I’d get to be involved with it by voicing Jaco, the main character of Toriyama-sensei’s latest manga. Freeza’s one of the most charming characters in Dragon Ball, so even though he’s a bad guy I really love him. I think one thing to watch out for in the film is the way in which Freeza battles Goku and co., plus the fighting styles that Goku, Vegeta, and the rest of the good guys use.

With Jaco, he’s got that mask-like face, so you can’t really tell what kind of voice he’d have just from the pictures. But he’s still a multifaceted character: cute in some ways, and in other ways kind of a jerk. I worked hard to try and convey all that properly.

Even in the more serious scenes, if you peek over at Jaco it might make you chuckle. The movie’s higher quality than I thought. I tried to do Jaco justice with my performance, so hopefully that comes across. I hope you all enjoy the film right to the end.

blog_18_days

A brief update on April 1st featured a plug for the latest limited-edition voice message from Freeza over on the film’s main site and other such promos, before Bulma shockingly reveals that Trunks actually isn’t Vegeta’s child!  Can this possibly be true?! (hint: check the date)

blog_17_days

Then on April 2nd, the blog updated with a long-awaited message from the prince of the Saiyans, Ryō Horikawa:

Hey, Bulma here!
Just 16 days until the movie’s premiere!
Today we’ve got a comment from Ryō Horikawa, voice of Vegeta!

When the TV series wrapped up, I think I said something like “I’ll never fight again!” But then in the last film we had a prelude to a new adventure, so with this current film I’ve thrown myself into the maelstrom of battle once more. “Hey, I’m totally fighting!” (laughs) I’m really enjoying myself. I can’t begin to describe how it feels.

When I learned that the script this time was an original from Toriyama-sensei, I was grateful that he’d be kind enough to write it for us; it makes me feel blessed to be an actor.

The first thing to strike me was that Freeza was returning to life. Back then he was an opponent Vegeta never gained the upper hand on, one he ultimately couldn’t beat. His bitter tears really left an impression, and I think that the scene where despite his pride he begs “Kakarot, please, defeat Freeza” was tragic. In that sense then, you could say that Freeza looms large in Vegeta’s mind; he has a lot of emotional meaning for Vegeta.

Toriyama-sensei’s given Vegeta a cool scene this time around; it almost feels like a chance for him to get his revenge (laughs).

Of course the fight scenes are filled with fun at every turn. I feel that this turned out to be a fantastic movie that won’t disappoint, so definitely get yourself to the theater.

Finally, on April 3rd they updated with a visit from Whis:

Bulma: Hey, Bulma here!
Just 15 days until the premiere!
Today Whis has stopped by!
Whis, your treat for the day is Bavarian cream!

Whis: Greetings Bulma, and greetings to all the people of Earth. My name is Whis.
So today you’ve got…“Bavarian cream”, was it? Let’s see here….Hmmm, this tastes exquisite!

Bulma: Naturally! I made it myself! Well, now that you’ve eaten, tell us a little about the film!

Whis: Oh, it looks as if that Freeza fellow has come back to life. You know, I never imagined anyone besides Lord Beerus or Majin Boo was capable of defeating Freeza, so when he lost to Son Goku it was quite a shock. Now he probably yearns for revenge on Son Goku and the others. I’m looking forward to seeing how much stronger he can become. Goku and Vegeta are currently training under my tutelage, but both of them have their weaknesses.

Bulma: What do you mean, “weaknesses”?!

Whis: I cannot say. Well then, I should probably be returning to Lord Beerus. You never know when he might roll over in his sleep and destroy another planet. I’m looking forward to 15 days from now. Good day to you all.

The story for Revival of “F”, opening nationwide in Japan 18 April 2015 in 2D and IMAX 3D, is being crafted by original manga author Akira Toriyama, who stated he is writing it, “…as though it were a continuation of the manga when it was in serialization,” and that while it will, “…of course be a continuation of the previous Battle of Gods,” he has also, “…deliberately increased the amount of action scenes by a good deal.” Tadayoshi Yamamuro, who worked for many years as character designer and animation supervisor on the Dragon Ball franchise, will serve as the film’s director and animation supervisor. Norihito Sumitomo will return from Battle of Gods and the Majin Boo arc of Dragon Ball Kai for musical composition duties. Initial attendees of the upcoming film, Dragon Ball Z: Revival of “F”, in Japan will receive a slew of bonus items at the theater, including a special Dragon Ball Volume “F”. New media articles in Japan have revealed the volume’s cover art, which is a play on the original art for Volume 41 of the collected manga:

The “Jump Comics Godliest Edition” volume is not advertised to contain any actual comics, but is instead set to compile the complete script of the film, along with “inside stories” on the script, conceptual material with Toriyama’s comments, and his commentary on the film itself. As this booklet will touch on the plot of the film in detail, the packaging advises attendees not to open it until after seeing the film.

As we continue to play catch-up with the official blog to promote Dragon Ball Z: Revival of “F”, back on March 28th it updated with a comment from Shōko Nakagawa, known worldwide as the voice of the Oracle Fish (and probably some other stuff):

Just 21 days until the premiere!
Today we’ve got a comment from Shōko Nakagawa, voice of the Oracle Fish!

Getting to breathe life into a Dragon Ball character again after the last film, and being able to inhabit the same world as them, was totally unbelievable. Right after recording wrapped up, it was like I was walking in a dream. But as more time passes, it all starts to feel real: I’m thrilled that this “Oracle Fish” character really does inhabit this universe, and I really did get to take part in this historic movie. I got to experience being in the same scene as Goku and Vegeta, which I missed out on last film. I got hyped up just at the thought of breathing in the same carbon dioxide Vegeta exhaled, so it was really tough synching myself up with someone as laid back as the Oracle Fish.

Plus, the fact that Freeza’s coming back to life is definitely good news; he may be a bad guy, but everyone adores him. There have been loads of exciting battles throughout all the manga and anime mankind has produced throughout history, but in my life the two lines which filled me with the most despair were Freeza’s “My battle power is 530,000” and “I still have two more transformations left”. At first I was terrified of him, yet somehow he’s a character you just can’t quite hate. When I see the sparkle in boys’ eyes as they talk about the Freeza story arc, I’m amazed that something could make them so happy and excited.

Like in the last film, I get the feeling that Vegeta’s becoming more laid-back and cheerful, so it’ll be fun to see what he’s like this time around (laughs). Since Toriyama-sensei wrote the script himself this time, I think it’s packed with character dialogue and other stuff that make you go “Yes! These are the characters!” Just like the last film, this one’s got both familiar faces and unexpected ones; each and every line might go down in universal history, so you’d better pay attention to them all.

Today…Oh hey, Jaco. So, you’ve come too?

Jaco: What do you mean, “you”?! I’m a super elite galactic patrolman! Is that any way to talk to me?! I came to tell you that the Earth’s in peril!

Bulma: Well, since you know Freeza’s back, can’t you get rid of him?

Jaco: I cannot get involved in such affairs.  Right then, I’m outta here.

Bulma: H-Hang on a minute! I thought you said you were a super-elite galactic patrolman! Where’s your pride?!

Jaco: It’s true. I am a proud super-elite.

Bulma: Then how about you lend us a hand?

Jaco: ……My mission is to protect the peace of the galaxy, so I’ve got no choice but to turn a blind eye to Freeza. Forget it.

Bulma: How can I?! Hey, where are you going?!

Jaco: Farewell!

The soundtrack was originally listed with a tentative 40 background musical tracks, but that appears to have been whittled down during the movie’s production. In contrast, the original soundtrack for Battle of Gods contained 41 background musical tracks and two songs performed by FLOW. It should also be noted that some of the earlier tracks — specifically “The Pilaf Gang”, “Shenlong Comes Out”, and the main opening theme “CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA” — have been recycled from the Battle of Gods soundtrack.

The full track listing for the soundtrack, including the original Japanese text and romanizations, can be found on the “Movie Soundtracks” page of our “Music Database”.

The soundtrack is currently available for pre-order from CDJapan.
