The “Jump Victory Carnival” event is underway this weekend in Tokyo and many Japanese Dragon Ball fans have been tweeting out pictures of a flyer being handed out to attendees for the upcoming Dragon Ball Z movie. The artwork is the same as that used on the movie’s official “teaser” website, with the front of the flyer featuring Son Goku and the back showcasing Shenlong, along with a reprint of author Akira Toriyama’s initial comments about the movie. The only new piece of information is inconspicuously tucked away in the lower right-hand corner of the front of the flyer, listing veteran animator Tadayoshi Yamamuro as the movie’s director.

Earlier today, Japanese entertainment news website Oricon had reported the same:

監督は、アニメ『ドラゴンボール』シリーズの作画監督を長年務めた山室直儀氏が務める。

Serving as director will be Tadayoshi Yamamuro, who worked for many years as an animation supervisor for the “Dragon Ball” anime series.

With Tadayoshi Yamamuro becoming Toei Animation’s “go-to guy” for anything Dragon Ball-related in the past, including acting as the character designer and chief animation supervisor for Battle of Gods, it is unclear what will be happening with the animation supervisor position for this film. More than likely it will be filled by another animator, as opposed to having Yamamuro perform both roles, but nothing has been officially announced as of yet. Yamamuro has previously only provided direction for the opening and ending animations in Dragon Ball Kai, so it will be interesting to see how he adapts to a much larger, and more important, project such as this.

Though the company registered “dragonball2015.com” in the early hours back on the 15th, Toei Animation has opened an official website for the upcoming new Dragon Ball Z movie at “d2015gw.com“.

The website, whose debut is no doubt in conjunction with this week’s September 2014 issue of V-Jump (which contains the first official reveal for the movie), currently features an opening splash with an ominous message:

omonious_wish

史上最悪の願い。それは、絶望の始まり。

The worst wish in history. That is the beginning of despair.

Additionally, the page refreshes to the same image of Goku as seen in the magazine reveals:

golden_week_website

The website features little else, other than production information attributed to the generic “2015 Dragon Ball Z Production Committee” and the “GW” in the URL and page text referring to an expected opening during “Golden Week” in 2015.

The new film’s story will be crafted by original manga author Akira Toriyama, who stated he is writing it, “…as though it were a continuation of the manga when it was in serialization,” and that while it will, “…of course be a continuation of the previous Battle of Gods,” he has also, “…deliberately increased the amount of action scenes by a good deal.”

An article on Natalie also announces the new film.

Tomorrow’s September 2014 issue of V-Jump provides a few new bombshells about the upcoming Dragon Ball: XENOVERSE video game for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

For starters, the mysterious “Future Warrior” can indeed turn into a Super Saiyan!

xenoverse_vjump-sept2014v2

A blurb on the page goes on to ask:

戦闘中のコミュニケーションが未知なる物語を紡ぎ出す…!?

Communication in the middle of battle will spin an unknown tale…?

It would appear that the player will not only intervene in battles, but also talk to the Dragon Ball warriors, which could lead to an expansion of the story! The screen shots on the page showcase Yamcha (during the Cell arc) donating energy to the “Future Warrior” because he does not think he himself will be of any use in battle; Yamcha tells the “Future Warrior” to absolutely defeat their enemies. The captions also say that the “Future Warrior” will have response choices of their own which will influence history. Finally, the page goes on to explain that the “answer” (presumably as to why he can turn into a Super Saiyan) will appear in next month’s issue, and that it will all become clear, so absolutely do not miss it!

The September 2014 issue of V-Jump hits Japanese shelves tomorrow (19 July 2014) and is available to order from CDJapan, Play-Asia, and Amazon Japan.

Tomorrow’s September 2014 issue of V-Jump teases yet another new transformation for Broli in the upcoming Ja’aku Ryū Misshon (“JM” / “Evil Dragon Mission”) update #6 for the card-based arcade game Dragon Ball Heroes. After discussing some of the current JM5 material, the magazine drops the following tease:

broli_jm6_tease

さらなる強戦士に宇宙震撼!!!

At the appearance of an even stronger warrior, the universe quakes!!!

An exclusive scoop will be provided on “the astounding next stage of Heroes” in the next issue. Is this a Super Saiyan 4 transformation for Broli, or something else entirely?

Broli was given a Super Saiyan 3 transformation back in 2009 for Dragon Battlers, the Carddass predecessor to Dragon Ball Heroes based on the same card/arcade technology. His and Vegeta’s Super Saiyan 3 forms were also used later that year for Raging Blast on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The current update, “JM5” (launched earlier this month), features a variety of old villains — such as Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta, Garlic Jr., Slug, No. 13, Bojack, Tullece, Janenba, and even Hatchihyack — under Bobbidi’s spell, as well as a “pure” Majin Boo with Bobbidi absorbed.

Dragon Ball Heroes has not made its way outside of Japan. A second portable version of the arcade game, Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission 2, launches on the Japanese Nintendo 3DS next month. The game will cover up through “JM3” of the arcade game’s updates.

With the impending “official announcement” of a new Dragon Ball Z movie coming this weekend in both V-Jump and Weekly Shōnen Jump, Toei has been hard at work creating the new movie’s official website. On 15 July 2014, mere hours after news of the movie first broke online, Toei acquired the dragonball2015.com domain and shortly thereafter updated it with the message “coming soon”. As of this post the website is currently locked down, requiring a password to gain access, presumably so it can be updated without the prying eyes of the internet. However, the page’s code is still viewable, and many fans took note of a metadata image hidden within the page’s code that will appear when the site is linked to on various social media networks, such as Facebook.

The illustration itself appears to be the movie’s official promotional artwork, as it is the same one being used for the official announcements in V-Jump and Weekly Shōnen Jump. The top of this promotional image appears to contain the movie’s tagline:

全宇宙待望。神次元バトル、開戦。

The Whole Universe Has Been Waiting. A Godly Dimension of Battle Begins.

The tagline is chock full of wordplay, which can be somewhat misleading. In this case the 神 (shin; read as “godly”) is a pun on something “new” and 次元 (jigen; read as “dimension”) can also be interpreted as a synonym for “scale”, giving us an indication that the battle, and possibly even the movie itself, will be on a “new level” (not necessarily that it’s taking place in a “new/godly dimension”). You’ll also notice that this is very similar in character to the original taglines used for Battle of Gods, which was 最強、始動。(“The mightiest make their move.” — or perhaps in light of the plot revealed later on, “The Strongest Stirs.”), followed by 全人類待望。かつてない興奮へー。 (“All Humanity Has Been Waiting. Toward an Unprecedented Excitement–.”).

The movie is still yet unnamed, which was also the case back in 2012 with the lead-up to Battle of Gods, and is simply being referred to as “Dragon Ball Z”. No exact premiere date has been set yet, but the movie is slated to open during Japan’s “Golden Week” in 2015. As with Battle of Gods, original author Akira Toriyama will once again be providing the original concept, writing the script, and drawing character designs. The official website will more than likely go live to the public this weekend when the aforementioned Jump anthologies hit store shelves, so stayed tuned!

Thanks to Avenged and JacobYBM for the heads up about this!

It may be a quiet period in between book and home video releases, but the other side of the merchandising machine is alive and well! Just last week, Japan saw the release of two toys to help facilitate a bit of pretend-fighting at home.

The “Zenkai (Full Throttle)! Action Kamehameha” toy slips over your wrist and has a three-axis movement recognition along with 16 types of sounds in total, including special moves such as Goku’s Kamehameha, Tenshinhan’s Kikō-hō, and even Vegeta’s Gyarikku-Hō. The toy retails for ¥3,996 and is available for order via CDJapan and Amazon Japan.

The “Punch Fighter” is a standard type of weighted punching bag for children showcasing some of the heroes from the Majin Boo arc of the series. The inflatable bag is 800mm tall and retails for ¥2,592 and is also available for order via CDJapan and Amazon Japan.

Both products are branded as Dragon Ball Kai and were released 12 July 2014.

The “Full Color” version of the Dragon Ball manga reached the end of its storyline earlier this month with the print-version release of the fourth, fifth, and six volumes in the Majin Boo arc.

The third volume from last month started up a new Q&A session (following up on previous ones, such as the great tidbits from the Cell arc volumes), but did not contain much in the way of exciting new information. This month’s releases are a doozy, however! All three sessions have been fully translated and have been archived over in our (appropriately enough!) “Translations” section.

Click through to read each in their entirety, or see below for a sampling of the most revealing new tidbits, such as more about Bibbidi and Bobbidi’s dark magic along with a name for Mr. Satan’s late wife…!

The Act of Fusion

It’s hard, but they can!
I think it’s possible to merge no matter the conditions, as long as it all goes well. I even think it’s possible for a larger number of people. However, since it’s quite hard for both parties to strike that delicate balance, it’s very difficult for two extremely different people to fuse. In that sense, synchronized swimmers would probably be really good at Fusion. By the way, there are many different types of Fusion, and the kind Goku learned is the one for increasing battle power.

The Birth of Bobbidi

Bibbidi split in two!
Rather than a child, he’s more like Bibbidi’s doppelganger. He’d split up whenever there was anything difficult for just a single person to do. He could increase the number of doppelgangers even more, but his magical powers would weaken in proportion. Now that Bibbidi is dead and Bobbidi has become the only one, he’s regained all the original magical power.

Mr. Satan’s Wife

Satan’s wife was a beautiful singer named Miguel!
Since she was named “Miguel (archangel)”, during their marriage a big fuss was made about how “an angel is marrying a devil!”

Our “Tidbits” section is one that we love a lot; it gives us a great place to collect random bits of information that do not make sense to flesh out into an entire multi-page “guide”, but still allow us to document some really great material. An upcoming addition to the section will cover a wealth of information documenting the fates of certain characters in the Dragon Ball series. Some of these tidbits come from original manga author Akira Toriyama himself, while others come from various other production committee members and guide books. Tune in this week for a sneak-peek (sneak-listen?) at one of our upcoming pages!

Bandai Namco has unleashed a new, extended promotional video for the upcoming Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission 2 portable conversion for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan:

The new video confirms many of the same tidbits previously revealed, such as including missions from 21 iterations (from the original arcade game’s first edition to the “Evil Dragon Mission” 3 update), the inclusion of over 2,000 cards, and the ability to carry over card data from the first game to the second game.

As for new information, the video details that the previously-mentioned “Ultimate Universe” mode will allow you to venture through Goku’s childhood up through Dragon Ball GT‘s storyline. Familiar characters will support you along the way, and you will also be able to use StreetPass for super power-ups. Sometimes you will cooperate, and other times you will face off against one another. There is also a “Scouter Mode” where, if the number is high enough, a giant boss comes out! You can also use the “Scouter Mode” to read QR codes from the regular Dragon Ball Heroes game — as well as V-Jump exclusives — to unlock special missions. “Burst Limit Mission” is a mode where you can only use each card once, and it is a big showdown with up to 40 battles in a row that will test your abilities to their limits.

Perhaps most interestingly, the game also comes with a special, original story entitled “The Birth of Majin Boo”. Will this somehow tie in with Akira Toriyama’s recent information-dump revealing Boo’s true origin and the nature of his summoning by Bibbidi…? We will have to wait and see when the game comes out!

Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission 2 will see its release 07 August 2014 and is available for pre-order from CDJapan and Play-Asia. Please note that the Nintendo 3DS is a region-locked system; a Japanese console is required to play the game.

The first Ultimate Mission — released back in February 2013 — covered up through the early “Galaxy Mission” updates of the original arcade version of Dragon Ball HeroesOver an entire half-year, the game swayed in and out of the Famitsu and Media Create top-selling games charts with reliable, if not consistent, sales figures. The game was not released outside of Japan.

The September issue of V-Jump officially hits Japanese store shelves this Saturday (19 July 2014) and, as originally reported by Anime News Network, will contain a “scoop” unveiling a new Dragon Ball Z movie. The movie is currently still in development, with original author Akira Toriyama once again providing the original concept, writing the script, and drawing character designs. Toriyama provides a comment discussing his involvement — and the fact that it will indeed be a brand new story to the series — but teases the events of the story are still a secret. The movie is slated to open during Japan’s “Golden Week”, most likely sometime in early May 2015.

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, the franchise’s most recent film and the first produced in 17 years, premiered on 30 March 2013 and was first announced 14 July 2012 in the 33rd issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump, in which Toriyama also relayed his comments. As soon as we are able to obtain a copy of the magazine ourselves, we will be sure to provide a translation of Toriyama’s new comment.

UPDATE: Thanks to our buddy kei17 transcribing the Japanese text for us, we are able to now provide a complete English translation of Toriyama’s comments:

[As with the last movie], I thought up the new story for the next Dragon Ball theatrical movie as though it were a continuation of the manga when it was in serialization. Just the fact that I don’t have to draw anything means I can obsess completely over the smallest bits of dialogue. Well, the truth is that I wasn’t planning on going that far, since it’s pretty exhausting at my age, but I got a little carried away.

This time will of course be a continuation of the previous Battle of Gods, but I’ve deliberately increased the amount of action scenes by a good deal. With regards to the contents, they told me, “Keep it a secret!” like they’re all high-and-mighty, so I can’t touch on it yet, but it should be super-duper interesting!

The fact that I’d say that, when I’m not big on the flashy action-stuff, means there’s no doubt about it! Even my very first editor Torishima, who rarely ever praises me, said, “This is good!”

Absolutely no doubt about it! …Although it won’t be any good if I say that too loudly and people end up disappointed by it, but at the very least, I’m confident that the contents are something that the fans will be able to thoroughly enjoy! Right now, I’m drawing the design illustrations for the new character[s] and such. The movie’s completion is still a ways out in the future, but please look forward to it!!
