In conjunction with Jump Festa, the American and European branches of Bandai Namco have confirmed that J-Stars Victory Vs, the Jump-franchise crossover fighting game extravaganza, will receive an international release as a new, updated version in summer 2015: J-Stars Victory Vs+.

Additionally, the game will make the update from PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4, with both console versions and the Vita release making their way out of Japan.

YATTA! J-STARS Victory VS + is coming to Western audiences for the PlayStation®4, PlayStation®3 and the PlayStation®Vita. The game will feature Manga/ Anime characters from over tons of different Shonen Jump franchises including ONE PIECE, NARUTO, BLEACH, DRAGON BALL Z and much more.

The company’s American branch notes on Tumblr that a new “arcade mode” will be coming to the game, with no mention made of what might happen with the original version’s multi-character story mode:

Yes. You can get excited. It’s official. The 2v2 brawler that features an insane roster filled with Shonen Jump’s manga stars, J-Stars Victory VS+, is coming to the Americas and will be hitting PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, AND for the first time ever, PlayStation 4. Also, with the first release outside of Japan, J-Stars will have an additional “Arcade Mode” coming with it’s Western debut. Check out the teaser trailer and stay tuned for more information!

The game, originally released back in March in Japan, features Son Goku, Vegeta, and Freeza from Dragon Ball, — not to mention Arale from Dr. Slump and her various Dragon Ball cameos! — along with a wealth of other playable and support characters from different series.

This week’s February 2015 issue of V-Jump in Japan contains slightly new information regarding Fukkatsu no “F” (“Revival of ‘F'”), the upcoming theatrical Dragon Ball Z movie.

The subject of moderate confusion among fans when the film’s poster was debuted, the character in the green track suit is formally unveiled as Gohan (though the official website’s image filenames had perhaps inadvertently revealed his identity). Gohan is described, accompanied by character design sketches by Akira Toriyama:

fnf_gohan_design_small

After Beerus attacked, Gohan’s clothing has become thoroughly subdued!! Did he give up that stupid-looking— …er, Great Saiyaman, we wonder?

Gohan in a tracksuit is quite the surprise. At any rate, apparently he can’t find his fighting clothes, so he ends up joining the battle looking like this!!

The magazine’s commentary, like that in Saikyō Jump earlier this month, also draws attention to the color of Gohan’s tracksuit, speculating that it might be a sign of respect towards Piccolo. A small blurb on the page accompanied by a screen from Battle of Gods simply notes that Gohan has spiky hair in that movie, and even became Great Saiyaman as entertainment. No mention is made of a Super Saiyan transformation.

The February 2015 issue of V-Jump, Shueisha’s ostensibly-video-game-focused magazine in Japan, hit Japanese shelves 20 December 2014 and is available to order at CDJapan, Play-Asia, and Amazon Japan.

The annual Jump Festa event was also held over the past weekend, and Saturday afternoon’s joint One Piece / Dragon Ball panel revealed a few new tidbits about the movie. According to reports from attendees, the movie’s dialogue has not yet been recorded. Nevertheless, the film will apparently show Kuririn as a police officer (!), and Freeza training for the first time in his life in order to become more powerful. Notably absent, however, will be Goku’s Super Saiyan form; he apparently does without it for the entirety of the movie, echoing comments from creator Akira Toriyama made last year and earlier this year. Masako Nozawa (Goku) and Ryūsei Nakao (Freeza) are also said to have exchanged lines in character, although the contents of said exchange (if relevant to the film) have not been reported outside the event.

The story for Revival of “F” is being crafted by original manga author Akira Toriyama, who stated he is writing it, “…as though it were a continuation of the manga when it was in serialization,” and that while it will, “…of course be a continuation of the previous Battle of Gods,” he has also, “…deliberately increased the amount of action scenes by a good deal.” Tadayoshi Yamamuro, who worked for many years as character designer and animation supervisor on the Dragon Ball franchise, will serve as the film’s director and animation supervisor. Norihito Sumitomo will return from Battle of Gods and the Majin Boo arc of Dragon Ball Kai for musical composition duties. Revival of “F” is set to bring back Freeza and will also include two new characters (Sorbet and Tagoma), feature Beerus and Whis again from Battle of Gods, and much more.

Revival of “F” opens 18 April 2015 nationwide in Japan in 2D and 3D.

Today’s February 2015 issue of V-Jump in Japan drops an array of details regarding the upcoming Dragon Ball XENOVERSE video game.

xenoverse_logo_500w

Towa uses her dark magic to make Goku’s past enemies even more brutal. This is the trigger to the altering of history…?!

xenoverse_feb2015_1

Super 17, a villain from the near-final portion of the anime-only Dragon Ball GT TV series, will also make an appearance in Dragon Ball XENOVERSE. Included in his moveset will be his “Lightning Hell Sphere”, which he also used in the TV series.

xenoverse_feb2015_2

Dragon Ball XENOVERSE will feature an original animated sequence at the start of the game, which will depict Trunks’ decision to summon the player character via Shenlong. Towa, Mira, and the Kaiōshin of Time are also seen in the screenshots provided.

xenoverse_feb2015_3

The next issue promises an “all-out super feature” on the game a mere two weeks before its release.

The game’s official website also recently updated with information regarding its timeline and placement in the overall “Age” calendar for Dragon Ball:

xenoverse_website_timeline_info

The “world of the future” (Age 850) is the world the player character is summoned to. Toki-Toki City is the story’s starting point; lots of warriors (including the player) live there, and the city is home to the time vault and the Kaiōshin of Time (the Kaiōshin who governs time, and is 75 million years old). Toki-Toki is a mysterious bird, said to create time. Trunks is under orders from the Kaiōshin of Time to travel to various time periods throughout Dragon Ball‘s history. The player travels through time as part of the Time Patrol to fix anomolies. The website also states that Towa and Mira are collecting “kiri” via history-breaking.

The game appears to use Age 850 as the future setting instead of Dragon Ball Online‘s Age 1000; this makes it 100 years after the start of the series (rounding up a bit from Age 749).

The February 2015 issue of V-Jump, Shueisha’s ostensibly-video-game-focused magazine in Japan, hits Japanese shelves today (20 December 2014) and is available to order at CDJapan, Play-Asia, and Amazon Japan.

Dragon Ball XENOVERSE — currently in development by Dimps for Bandai Namco — will be released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. The game will release for the four consoles 05 February 2015 in Japan, 13 February 2015 in Europe, and 17 February 2015 in the Americas. The PC version seems to be on track for a global release via Steam 17 February 2015.

This week’s February 2015 issue of V-Jump brings the regular print serialization of Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission to a close. After 27 monthly chapters in the magazine, the promotional manga from “Toyotarō” moves over to archived, unlockable bonus content within Shueisha’s Shōnen Jump+ smartphone and PC app. All 28 chapters are digitally available in the current February 2015 issue of V-Jump+, which will remain unlockable via a code in the corresponding V-Jump issue until the end of January. From February onward, this content will be available only to those who unlocked it prior to the deadline.

In chapter 28 — “Dark Dragon” (ダークドラゴン Dāku Doragon) — Beat continues to train with Sora in the “White Room”, while in the Battlefield, the other Heroes come to realize that with the time-space transporter offline, a knockout in the game should have mortal consequences outside it. Broli didn’t deliver a knockout; he merely put them out of it. Which means… they were deliberately spared?

Genom appears before the others, but before they can try to free him from the Evil Dragons’ control, he reveals that he is not under the control of anyone: in fact, he he is the one in control. He tells them to get ready for a fantastic show: he had intended to leave them alive, but now the circumstances have changed, and he needs to kill them in order to obtain the One-Star Ball. However, Kagyu reveals that Genom is missing one more: the Four-Star Ball! Back when Broli suddenly appeared, Kagyu helped save the Dragon’s life, and as a token of gratitude, it handed over the Dragon Ball. In Kagyu’s hand, the Dragon Ball transforms into a card, which reveals the Four-Star Dragon himself! Both the Dragon that was defeated by Broli, and the Dragon Ball Broli obtained, were fakes. At Kagyu’s signal, they prepare a new Card Action Ability: “Dark Dragon”! A huge energy blast hurtles towards Genom, who was obviously not expecting this turn of events.

The series is going on hiatus “for a while” and its return will be announced in V-Jump proper. There is no word on whether or not “Toyotarō” is working on anything else in the meantime, or if the comic will wait for the next major update to Dragon Ball Heroes to pick back up again.

Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission began in the November 2012 issue of V-Jump as a two-page, seemingly-one-off promotional mini-manga for the card-based arcade game. As the months went on, the chapters expanded to more pages and began directly continuing onward from each other into a traditional, serialized story. New cards, techniques, and characters from the arcade game often showed up in the manga months ahead of time to help promote new updates and campaigns.

“Toyotarō” is, in all likelihood, a second pen-name used by Dragon Ball AF fan manga author and illustrator “Toyble”.

Despite originating on Japanese TV earlier this year, the special extended edition of the 2013 theatrical Dragon Ball Z film, Battle of Gods, has thus far only been released in select international markets (namely North America via FUNimation).

The Japanese market will finally receive their own version, with the extended edition hitting DVD and Blu-ray 13 March 2015.

Each version comes packed with a special sleeve for the disc as well as an original post card featuring art from the upcoming 2015 Dragon Ball Z theatrical film, Revival of ‘F’.

In all likelihood, the Japanese edition will be the only home release of the extended edition to feature FLOW’s two musical contributions (“Hero: Song of Hope” and “CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA”) in their original Japanese language; even in the Japanese language track on FUNimation’s and other international distributors’ releases, English versions performed by FLOW themselves are used.

The Japanese DVD (¥3,800 + tax) and Blu-ray (¥4,800 + tax) versions of the extended Battle of Gods are up for pre-order on CDJapan and Amazon Japan.

A new 30-second commercial for Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission 2 — a sequel to the first portable version of the four-year-old, still-going-strong, card-based arcade game — was posted to the game’s official website this week:

The commercial is a sequel to a previous one, where Trunks had already received the game. Now Goten has it too, so the focus is on multiplayer: choosing a team of five cards to do battle, cooperative play against a giant boss, and StreetPass functionality where other players’ characters will show up in one’s own game.

As of last month the game had pushed 165,636 total copies according to the Famitsu sales list, roughly 53,000 fewer copies than its predecessor at the same point in time.

Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission 2 is available for purchase at CDJapan and Play-Asia. A Japanese system is required to play the (region-locked) game.

Thanks to Anime News Network for the heads-up.

Japan’s TOHO Cinemas have released their own special promotional video to promote Fukkatsu no “F” (“Revival of ‘F'”), the upcoming theatrical Dragon Ball Z movie, which contains a few minor snippets not present in the film’s recent trailer:

Much like the film’s official website, the video contains a special message from Freeza (Ryūsei Nakao), this time promoting TOHO’s “Cinemileage” service. Joining now will earn not just points for every movie watched, but a special clear file folder featuring the movie’s poster art:

Vegeta: Wh- what was that?!
Goku: FREE-zaaaaa!!

Goku: Become a Cinemileage® member, and see Dragon Ball Z: Revival of “F”!
Freeza: A special clear file folder, you say?!

Hot on the heels of this morning’s preview on Mezamashi TV, the full-length version of the trailer for Fukkatsu no “F” (“Revival of ‘F'”), the upcoming theatrical Dragon Ball Z movie, has been posted online and added to the film’s official website.

Dialog in the trailer is identical from the material previewed this morning:

TEXT: Creator, Writer, Character Designer – Akira Toriyama

TEXT: Revived
PICCOLO: He’s come back as a monster in a totally different league from us!
VEGETA: What’s going on?!
GOKU: Freeza!
FREEZA: Allow me to show you… my further evolution!

The trailer wraps up with promotional information about the pre-release tickets, which include one of either a Goku or Freeza “Movie – Akira Toriyama Model Super Progression Strap” featuring the character’s movie version inside their version from the manga.

New credits are presented on the main page of the official website, perhaps most notably including the fact that Norihoto Sumitomo will return from Battle of Gods and the Majin Boo arc of Dragon Ball Kai for musical composition duties:

Art Director: Shinzō Yuki
Music: Norihito Sumitomo
Color Design: Teppei Hotta
Special Effects: Nao Ōta
CG Director: Kai Makino
Director of Photography: Yōsuke Motoki
Production Supervisor: Kazumi Fujioka

Masako Nozawa (Son Goku, et al.), Ryūsei Nakao (Freeza), Kōichi Yamadera (Beerus), Masakazu Morita (Whis), Ryō Horikawa (Vegeta), Masaharu Satō (Kame-sen’nin), Hiromi Tsuru (Bulma), Mayumi Tanaka (Kuririn), Takeshi Kusao (Trunks), Hikaru Midorikawa (Tenshinhan), and Yūko Minaguchi (Videl) are all confirmed to return, and hopefully to all of their respective roles noted here.

The “Story” page of the official website includes new information, as well:

A fated clash!!
A battle surpassing gods begins — !!!!

After peace returned to Earth following the battle with God of Destruction Beerus, the surviving remnants of Freeza’s forces, Sorbet and Tagoma, approached, seeking the Dragon Balls. Their objective: to revive Freeza in order to bring his forces back to power. That worst wish in history is granted at last, and the resurrected Freeza plots his vengeance against Goku and the other Saiyans… And so, Freeza’s new army advances on Earth, and Gohan, Piccolo, and Kuririn clash with a thousand soldiers. Goku and Vegeta challenge Freeza to a fated duel, but Freeza had attained an overwhelming power-up!

“Allow me to show you… my further evolution!”

Now, for warriors beyond their limits, the curtain was about to open on a battle like none before or since –.

Rather cutely, that final sentence works in the title/phrase “Kuu-Zen-Zetsu-Go”, words used as the second opening theme to Dragon Ball Kai in Japan.

Finally, the official website also includes a special audio message from Freeza (Ryūsei Nakao):

地球の皆様、この度、私、遂に復活することになりました。楽しみですよ、あの憎きサイヤ人達に復讐するその時が…。2015年4月18日、皆様も楽しみにしておいてくださいね。

People of Earth, this time around I shall finally be revived. I’m looking forward to the time when I will get my revenge on those loathsome Saiyans…. 18 April 2015, everyone please look forward to it as well.

The story for the movie is being crafted by original manga author Akira Toriyama, who stated he is writing it, “…as though it were a continuation of the manga when it was in serialization,” and that while it will, “…of course be a continuation of the previous Battle of Gods,” he has also, “…deliberately increased the amount of action scenes by a good deal.” Tadayoshi Yamamuro, who worked for many years as character designer and animation supervisor on the Dragon Ball franchise, will serve as the film’s director and animation supervisor. The fourth — and likely final — Japanese ending theme for the Majin Boo arc of Dragon Ball Kai has been announced: “GALAXY” by Kyūso Nekokami, who takes their name from an accessory item in Final Fantasy X-2.

The space-themed song will be included on the band’s next album, Happy Ponkotsu Land (“ponkotsu” being slang for striking something with your fist, or a battered/worn-out item). The album will release 14 January 2015 in Japan.

The song itself will be used as the ending theme for the Dragon Ball Kai arc beginning in January, but will debut before that 14 December 2014 on the radio program “MUSIC FREAKS” on FM802, where vocalist/guitarist Seiya Yamasaki is a DJ.

The album will contain seven songs, including “OS” (for which there is already a video), “Scary song” (with a “ghost” motif), and “Yō suru ni akita” (“In short, I’m sick of you/it”, on the theme of divorce).

  1. GALAXY
  2. OS
  3. Scary song
  4. Hinkon Bijinesu (“Poverty Business”)
  5. Yō suru ni akita (“In short, I’m sick of you/it”)
  6. Yusha Rotoshikku (“The Hero, Lotosik”)
  7. Nanmanda

The first pressing limited edition version of the album will come with a DVD which will contain a digest version of their summer tour and backstage footage, with an alternate audio track with member commentary.

The album’s artwork will be provided by Shunjū Aono, whose most well-known work is “Ore wa mada honki dashite ‘nai dake” (“I just haven’t gotten serious yet, that’s all”), which was popular enough to receive a live-action movie in 2013. The illustration for the jacket is of a surreal world.

No CD single is currently announced for the song. The regular edition of the album (VICL-64268) will retail for ¥1,000, while the limited edition version with the bonus DVD (VIZL-761) will retail for ¥2,400. Both versions are currently available for pre-order at CDJapan.

“GALAXY” will be the sixth ending theme for the Japanese broadcast of the “refreshed” series overall, following “Yeah! Break! Care! Break!” by Dragon Soul (1-54), “Kokoro no Hane” by Team Dragon from AKB48 (55-98), “Dear Zarathustra” by Good Morning America (99-111), “Junjō” by Leo Ieri (112-123), and “Oh Yeah!!!!!!!” by Czecho No Republic (124-present).

UPDATE: View the full-length proper trailer >>

A trailer for the upcoming Dragon Ball Z 2015 theatrical film, Revival of “F”, was teased early Friday morning on the Japanese television program Mezamashi TV.

In addition to general narration from the hosts, character dialog includes:

PICCOLO: He’s come back as a monster in a totally different league from us!
VEGETA: What’s going on?!
GOKU: Freeza!
FREEZA: Allow me to show you… my further evolution!

It may be worth noting that Freeza’s dialog here is slightly different from the similar quote printed in the recent January 2015 issue of V-Jump, where the word henshin (“transformation”) was used; here, it is shinka (“evolution” or “progression”).

Mezamashi TV also teased the movie earlier this year. The 2013 Dragon Ball Z film, Battle of Gods, was given similar teases on Mezamashi TV with previews and promotional videos.

The story for the movie is being crafted by original manga author Akira Toriyama, who stated he is writing it, “…as though it were a continuation of the manga when it was in serialization,” and that while it will, “…of course be a continuation of the previous Battle of Gods,” he has also, “…deliberately increased the amount of action scenes by a good deal.” Tadayoshi Yamamuro, who worked for many years as character designer and animation supervisor on the Dragon Ball franchise, will serve as the film’s director. No other movie staff have been confirmed at this time. Revival of “F” is set to bring back Freeza and will also include two new characters (Sorbet and Tagoma), feature Beerus and Whis again from Battle of Gods, and much more.

Revival of “F” opens 18 April 2015 nationwide in Japan in 2D and 3D.
