"The Man Named Jiren" is the thirtieth chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga series written and illustrated by Toyotarō, with supervision and guidance from original Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama. It was first published in Japan in the January 2018 issue of Shueisha's V-Jump, with a sale date of 21 November 2017.

Summary

Goku is unable to comprehend how there is someone stronger than Toppo in Universe 11, and this "Jiren" also has no interest in becoming a God of Destruction! Goku is excited for the Tournament of Power and the possibility of there being so many strong guys out there; Toppo thinks Goku is quite odd.

The Great Priest announces that each universe shall select ten competitors, and that knocking an opponent out of the ring is the method for disqualification. The tournament will last 100 taks (approximately 48 minutes), and it will be a battle royale with all opponents fighting in the ring together at the same time. The team with the most remaining fighters at the end will be the winner, or in the case that only one fighter is left, obviously that fighter's universe will be the winner. The Super Dragon Balls will be given to the strongest fighter; as such, the Great Priest requests that Champa hand over the three he has already collected, and they will gather the remaining balls.

The Universe 3 Kaiōshin Ea asks if the winning universe itself will gain anything as a reward, but the Great Priest explains that they will receive nothing; instead, the losing universes will be erased by the Omni-King one by one. Universes 1, 5, 8, and 12 will be exempt from the tournament due to their higher mortal level, which means that only five will remain in the end. The erasure will include all of the gods — save for their guide angels, of course — which further puts everyone into a panic. Beerus wonders if their mortal level is actually that low; Whis explains that it is 3.18, the second-lowest rating.

With a little under 39 hours until the tournament begins in the special "Word of Void", the Great Priest teleports everyone back home to begin recruiting their teammates. Beerus is furious with Goku over their predicament, though Shin rightfully notes that it sounds like the Omni-Kings were going to erase these universes anyway before deciding on the tournament, thus giving them a literal fighting chance to save themselves. Since the best fighters are probably on Earth anyway, they decide to make their way to Bulma's to eat up and start planning.

Over in Universe 11, Vermoud is relatively unfazed by their predicament, fully confident in Toppo and the Pride Troopers… so long as Jiren participates.

Back at Capsule Corporation, Vegeta and Bulma are in disbelief at Goku's incompetence. Since there is no written exam this time, they figure they can bring Majin Boo along. Vegeta would be a natural choice himself, but Vegeta's second child is due any day and he will not leave! Whis appears holding a blanket, and with a quick motion of his eyes, is able to "deliver" the baby right out of Bulma! Goku figures this is how babies are actually born and this must be the way Chi-Chi did it, but Shin tells him that this is not how it is usually done.

With Vegeta now able to participate, the group moves on to figuring out the rest of their team. There are apparently only 28 planets with appropriate lifeforms on them, but Shin has not observed them all in terms of their combat strength. Whis suggests they continue from the previous tournament's team of Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Boo. Goku suggests Monaka, but Beerus forbids it, saying Monaka is ill. Vegeta questions if Gohan can fight; Goku is unsure. Goku questions is they should bring Goten and Trunks; Vegeta says to leave the kids out of this, and to not even tell them about it. Goku then figures they can bring the Turtle Hermit, Tenshinhan, and Kuririn along with his wife No. 18. Vegeta figures if they are bringing No. 18, they should also bring No. 17. They have no idea where No. 17 might be, though, so Goku takes off to ask No. 18 about him.

Over in Universe 11 on Planet Bath, the Pride Troopers fight back against a giant crab monster. Toppo arrives and shoots the monster as Dispo protects a child. Jiren is apparently off on a distant planet named Toile recapturing Oshlet aliens, and he will return once the situation is under control. The crab monster fires an enormous amount of foam from his mouth trapping everyone around him, but someone flies in with a quick series of attacks, ultimately trapping the monster with a device attached to his arm. Jiren has arrived, and has apparently flown directly here without the aid of a spaceship.

Vermoud explains that Jiren has devoted himself to justice, does not act on self-interest, and will not even kill bad guys. There is one thing that can bait him into participating in the tournament, however, and the Super Dragon Balls can grant him that wish. Vermoud then asks to be taken directly to Jiren.

Back on Bath, Jiren declines to participate when asked by Toppo, saying that he will not save their own universe at the cost of others being erased. From above, Vermoud states that his wish could come true should they win. Jiren will participate, but only on the condition that he will return to Universe 11 should any trouble occur while he is away.

Interstitial Page

In the interstitial page following this chapter in the sixth collected volume, the Universe 11 God of Destruction Vermoud is relieved that Jiren agreed to participate, and asks his Kaiōshin Cae to contemplate what they would have done if he had refused.

Continuity

The events of the manga and the anime diverge significantly. Below are the main differences, along with the episodes where the events of this chapter occur or contrast.

  • Toppo tells Goku about Jiren after their fight in episode 82 of the anime, but the tone is considerably less friendly due to the the other universes' perception of Goku as a villain in the anime version of the Zen Exhibition Match. Toppo refuses to shake Goku's hand after the battle, and warns him about Jiren, the strongest in Universe 11.
  • It is not explicitly confirmed that Jiren is stronger than Vermoud until episode 110 of the anime.
  • In the anime, Toppo is not known to be a candidate for God of Destruction in Universe 11 in-universe at the time of the Zen Exhibition Match, though the detail had already been revealed on Toei Animation's website.[1] It was not revealed in-universe until episode 125.
  • It is not explicitly revealed that Jiren has no interest in becoming a God of Destruction at any point in the anime.
  • In the anime, the Great Priest tells all the universes about the Tournament of Power before the Zen Exhibition Match. He delivers the news to Universe 7 at the end of episode 77, telling them the date and time and that they would need to choose ten members to represent their universe.
  • At the beginning of episode 78, the Great Priest goes on to tell Universe 7 the location of the Tournament of Power (the World of Void) and the prize (the Super Dragon Balls), information that was also delivered to the other universes before the Zen Exhibition Match.
  • However, only Universe 7 is informed at that time that the losing universes will be erased (because Goku is the Omni-King's friend).
  • The other universes do not learn this until episode 80, after the second of the three matches in the anime version of the Zen Exhibition Match. The Great Priest also tells them about mortal levels at this time, and the exempt universes.
  • In the anime, Universe 7's Elder Kaiōshin is the one who asks what will happen to the gods of the erased universes. (Rumoosh is the one to ask in the manga.)
  • Ea's question in the manga about what the winning universe will get mirrors Shin's question in episode 78, when the Great Priest visited his world. His answer is the same: the winning universe will get nothing.
  • Whis makes the same observation that the tournament provides an opportunity for one of the universes that was slated for destruction to be spared in episode 80.
  • In the manga, Whis tells Beerus their mortal level and ranking. In the anime, Whis learns about these things along with everyone else in episode 80.
  • They are still at the Zen Exhibition Match in episode 80 when Beerus expresses his jealousy that Whis will be spared. (Champa does the same with Vados.) In the anime, Whis just tells Beerus that their positions are different. Later, after the Zen Exhibition Match ends in episode 82, they return to the Kaiōshin Realm and have the same conversation that is in the manga, and Whis explains that he was "dispatched from the other side".
  • In the anime, Goku has the idea to try to talk the Omni-Kings out of erasing universes in episode 78, before the Zen Exhibition Match. There also, Whis advises him not to do that.
  • Beerus calls for a strategy/food session at Capsule Corporation in episode 82.
  • Vermoud's planet is never seen in the anime. He leaves the recruiting entirely up to Toppo.

  • Three Pride Troopers oversee the evacuation of the residents of Planet Bath while the other five (not counting Toppo and Jiren, who come late) fight the crab monsters.
  • The fighters are Dispo (on point), Vuon, Kunsi, Zoire, and Tupper.
  • The evacuation is led by Casserale, who they call the "General", and he is seen near the end of the chapter with two more Pride Troopers. One of them is recognizable as Cocotte, though she is seen only from the back. The other, cleaning up crab foam behind Casserale, is not recognizable, but Kettle is the only Pride Trooper destined for the Tournament of Power who does not explicitly appear in this chapter.
  • The large, crab-like alien the Pride Troopers fight against appears to be a direct copy and reference to an alien from the 2007 Dr. Slump: Dr. Mashirito and Abale-chan manga and theatrical special feature.

  • Jiren's actual debut is airborne, as he rushes toward the giant crab monster, but his page-height face reveal three pages later was corrected by Akira Toriyama before publication. These corrections are detailed at the end of the sixth collected volume.
