The upcoming new film, Dragon Ball Z: Revival of “F”, has been announced for IMAX 3D screenings in Japan. This is the first IMAX 3D production for a Japanese movie.

The film will receive standard 2D and 3D screenings, as well, when it debuts nationwide in Japan 18 April 2015. Preview screenings are scheduled for late March and early April.

The previous film, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, was the first Japanese film to be screened in IMAX Digital.

The story for Revival of “F” is being crafted by original manga author Akira Toriyama, who stated he is writing it, “…as though it were a continuation of the manga when it was in serialization,” and that while it will, “…of course be a continuation of the previous Battle of Gods,” he has also, “…deliberately increased the amount of action scenes by a good deal.” Tadayoshi Yamamuro, who worked for many years as character designer and animation supervisor on the Dragon Ball franchise, will serve as the film’s director and animation supervisor. Norihito Sumitomo will return from Battle of Gods and the Majin Boo arc of Dragon Ball Kai for musical composition duties. Momoiro Clover Z will contribute a song alongside Maximum the Hormone, whose “F” will be used as a “battle song” during the film. Revival of “F” is set to bring back Freeza and will also include two new characters (Sorbet and Tagoma), feature Beerus and Whis again from Battle of Gods, and much more.

Similar to Battle of Gods, it appears as though the Pilaf Gang will once again be making an appearance in the upcoming Dragon Ball Z film, Revival of ‘F’. Voice actors Shigeru Chiba and Eiko Yamada, the respective voices of Pilaf and Mai, both tweeted earlier this morning that they had completed recording their character’s lines, along with Tesshō Genda, the voice of Shuu.

Shigeru Chiba:
今日はピラフ大王ではしゃいできたぜ!

It was a delight being the Great King Pilaf today!

Eiko Yamada:

本日、ピラフ、シュウ、マイ の収録完了! 久々に3人揃えて、楽しかったです!

Pilaf, Shuu, and Mai finished recording today! It was fun getting these three longtime acquaintances together!

Eiko Yamada even provided a picture of the group following their recording session, along with a snapshot of Shigeru Chiba going over his lines.

As each new year begins, we like to take a look back at some of the biggest stories to hit Dragon Ball fandom that prior year, pick out some of our own favorites, and make predictions for the new year. Part of that ritual is also checking in on the predictions we made the year before and seeing — at least in this year’s case! — how amazingly psychic we are.

Or, well, at least how we have been doing this long enough to be able to somewhat read the market!

What do you all see coming our way in 2015? Give the show a listen and let us know!

SHOW DESCRIPTION:
Episode #0372! VegettoEX and Julian discuss the top Dragon Ball news stories from 2014, along with a couple of their own picks. How did we do with our predictions from last year, and what do we see on the horizon for 2015?

(Please note that we have a bit of a curse: whenever it’s Julian’s turn to give predictions, something invariably happens with his audio. It was completely inaudible during recording, but a bit of a clicking affects a small portion of the show. It corrects itself, incidentally enough, right when he’s done with those predictions. Those responsible for the error have been sacked!)

This week’s March 2015 issue of V-Jump in Japan provides a slew of updates regarding preview screenings for the upcoming films, Dragon Ball Z: Revival of “F”.

revival_of_f_preview_updates

Screenings are set for seven cities across Japan, for one day each, between 30 March and 02 April — the earliest of these being nearly three weeks prior to the nationwide opening of 18 April. 1132 lucky recipients will get an invitation good for two to attend, for a grand total of 2264 attendees across all venues. Dates, cities, venues, and total attendees for each location are as follows:

30 March:

  • Sapporo, Hokkaido (Sapporo Cinema Frontier): 160 pairs (320 attendees)
  • Tokyo (Shinjuku Wald 9): 214 pairs (428 attendees)
  • Osaka (Umeda Burg 7): 220 pairs (440 attendees)
  • Hiroshima (Hiroshima Wald 11): 135 pairs (270 attendees)

31 March:

  • Nagoya, Aichi (109 Cinemas Nagoya): 128 pairs (256 attendees)
  • Fukuoka (T-Joy Hakata): 160 pairs (320 attendees)

02 April

  • Sendai, Miyagi (MOVIX Sendai): 115 pairs (230 attendees)

Readers of 24 different Shueisha magazines, including this month’s March 2015 issue of V-Jump, can enter for a chance to go by cutting out the included entry ticket and sending it attached to a 52-yen postcard with their desired venue, name, address, age, profession (or year in school), and telephone number to the supplied address. Entries must be postmarked by 09 March. No limit on entries is specified, although since each entry ticket must be an original and not a photocopy, multiple entries will require purchases of multiple magazines. (I myself have sent in eight thus far.)

Winners “will be notified upon receipt” of invitations, presumably around the third week of March. We will certainly keep you posted if we have any luck in getting ourselves into a screening…!

The European branch of Bandai Namco has revealed that a “season pass” for downloadable content will be made available for the upcoming Dragon Ball XENOVERSE video game. Additionally, even more Dragon Ball GT characters will be available for play both within the base game itself and as a part of the upcoming downloadable content.

image

The company’s Facebook page outlines the packs (with no specific pricing yet available):

DLC Pack 1 (Available in March 2015): 3 playable characters: GT Goku, Pan & GT Trunks; 4 Time Patrol quests; 12 Quests; 15 New Special Moves for the players’ avatars; 5 new costumes

DLC Pack 2 (release date to be confirmed later): Exclusive Playable Characters, Quests, Special moves and costumes

DLC Pack 3 (release date to be confirmed later): Turtle Hermit set, Jaco the Space Patroller and highly exclusive content!

The third DLC pack appears to be the “Patrol Perks” available to those pre-ordering the Japanese version of the game, confirming that Jaco will make his way out as a playable character internationally.

While prior games had haphazardly released additional color costumes and upgrade configurations, this will be the first set of structured and scheduled downloadable content for the Dragon Ball franchise.

A “season pass” traditionally bundles upcoming downloadable content at a moderate-to-significant discount over purchasing packs on an individual basis.

UPDATE: The North American branch of Bandai Namco has confirmed a base price of $9.99 per downloadable content pack, with the season pass netting players interested in acquiring all three packs a $5 savings at $24.99.

Dragon Ball XENOVERSE — currently in development by Dimps for Bandai Namco — will be released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. The game is still on track for 05 February 2015 release in Japan, while other territories have shifted slightly (North America to 24 February 2015, and Europe to 27 February 2015, the lattermost of which will also act as the global PC release date).

Today’s March 2015 issue of V-Jump in Japan provides a slew of details on the upcoming Dragon Ball XENOVERSE video game.

After a brief explanation of how to start playing (creating a character, being transported to Toki Toki City, and starting the mission), the magazine lays out some heavy news.

Most significantly, we receive a full-body character design for the mysterious villain teased earlier this week in Weekly Shōnen Jump (likely “Demigra”). While not stated outright, as it was in in Weekly Jump, this character is implied to be at the root of Towa and Mira’s various alterations to history.

The same page also brings us images of that altered history, including Ōzaru Vegeta and Nappa on Earth, a fight against Raditz where only Goku is killed, and a Ginyu Special Force with Vegeta taking the place of Ginyu. The same images of allies with red eyes and markings on their faces which was seen in Weekly Jump makes its reappearance here, as well.

Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta and Super Yi Xing Long (the Super One-Star Dragon) from Dragon Ball GT will also be making an appearance in-game. Both characters were recently added to Dragon Ball Heroes for the eighth phase of its “Evil Dragon Mission” iteration. While Heroes itself is not available outside Japan, the inclusion of these characters here is likely to please fans worldwide.

Finally, an official strategy guide has been announced for release the same day as the game in Japan. Dragon Ball Xenoverse: Historia Guardians’ Guide!! will cover the game in detail, and will also contain two bonus codes. The first will unlock Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta — who is a preorder bonus in most territories outside Japan — as a playable character, while the second will unlock a digital copy of the book on the “ShōnenJump+” app to read on the go.

toyotaro_rof_test2Anime News Network reports that next Wednesday’s March 2015 issue of V-Jump will announce a special manga adaptation of the upcoming movie Dragon Ball Z: Revival of ‘F’, which will be penned by none other than Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission author “Toyotarō“. The adaptation will cover the beginning of the movie and will be split into three parts and will run in consecutive issues of V-Jump, starting with next month’s April 2015 issue.

Victory Mission itself was moved from the print magazine to “V-Jump+” digital bonus content via the Shōnen Jump+ app as of the February 2015 issue, then was announced to be going on hiatus for an unspecified timeframe. This announcement appears to explain the reason for that series’ break.

For Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (the 2013 film), Dragon Ball SD author Naho Ooishi drew a 12-page adaptation that was published in the April 2013 issue of Saikyō Jump (and subsequently included in the second collected volume), which also covered just the beginning of the film. Toyotarō himself, meanwhile, penned a single-page gag comic accompanying the interview with him and Ooishi in the May 2013 issue of V-Jump, in which the main characters of Victory Mission are thrown into the movie in-progress. Even earlier than that, Naho Ooishi drew a two-part manga adaptation of the 2008 Jump Super Anime Tour special, which ran in the May and June 2009 issues of V-Jump.

“Toyotarō” himself is likely another name for the artist “Toyble”, who draws a popular dōjinshi (self-published fan comic) borrowing the mythical “Dragon Ball AF” name. Toyble’s output has slowed to a virtual standstill since the start of Victory Mission, lending support to the belief that he and “Toyotarō” are one and the same.

The March 2015 issue of V-Jump will also both announce and provide a chance to enter a preview screening for the new movie.

The North American official PlayStation Blog has announced the top-selling games from the PlayStation Network’s digital storefront. On the Vita, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z came in as the fourth-best-selling game for the 2014 calendar year.

Battle of Z was released digital-only for the Vita in most international territories, while the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions received both physical and digital releases. A physical Vita release was produced in Japan.

The Vita game was a part of several promotions over the course of the year, including April’s “Golden Week Sale” and August’s “Anime Sale”.

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z, developed by Artdink for Bandai Namco, was released worldwide in January 2014 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Vita.

Anime News Network reports that the upcoming 2015 #8 issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump in Japan spills the beans on more history-bending hijinks coming to Dragon Ball XENOVERSE.

In addition to taking control over and powering-up other villains, Towa’s quest to change history for the worse will apparently see even Goku’s allies affected. Not even Mr. Satan is immune to this evil power.

A small splash provides our first real look at a new character with a sinister smirk (possibly the mysterious “Demigra”), who stands behind Towa and is apparently the root of these characters’ fiendish power-ups.

A splash also reviews the first-press inclusions (“patrol perks”) for the game in Japan: a download code to obtain Jaco as a playable character, a download code to obtain a Kame-sen’nin character customization set, the Dragon Ball Heroes card “Trunks: Xeno”, and a serial code to obtain “Trunks: Xeno” within the Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle smartphone game.

Dragon Ball XENOVERSE — currently in development by Dimps for Bandai Namco — will be released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.
