Today’s March 2015 issue of V-Jump in Japan provides a slew of details on the upcoming Dragon Ball XENOVERSE video game.

After a brief explanation of how to start playing (creating a character, being transported to Toki Toki City, and starting the mission), the magazine lays out some heavy news.

Most significantly, we receive a full-body character design for the mysterious villain teased earlier this week in Weekly Shōnen Jump (likely “Demigra”). While not stated outright, as it was in in Weekly Jump, this character is implied to be at the root of Towa and Mira’s various alterations to history.

The same page also brings us images of that altered history, including Ōzaru Vegeta and Nappa on Earth, a fight against Raditz where only Goku is killed, and a Ginyu Special Force with Vegeta taking the place of Ginyu. The same images of allies with red eyes and markings on their faces which was seen in Weekly Jump makes its reappearance here, as well.

Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta and Super Yi Xing Long (the Super One-Star Dragon) from Dragon Ball GT will also be making an appearance in-game. Both characters were recently added to Dragon Ball Heroes for the eighth phase of its “Evil Dragon Mission” iteration. While Heroes itself is not available outside Japan, the inclusion of these characters here is likely to please fans worldwide.

Finally, an official strategy guide has been announced for release the same day as the game in Japan. Dragon Ball Xenoverse: Historia Guardians’ Guide!! will cover the game in detail, and will also contain two bonus codes. The first will unlock Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta — who is a preorder bonus in most territories outside Japan — as a playable character, while the second will unlock a digital copy of the book on the “ShōnenJump+” app to read on the go.

Dragon Ball XENOVERSE — currently in development by Dimps for Bandai Namco — will be released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. The game is still on track for 05 February 2015 release in Japan, while other territories have shifted slightly (North America to 24 February 2015, and Europe to 27 February 2015, the lattermost of which will also act as the global PC release date).

toyotaro_rof_test2Anime News Network reports that next Wednesday’s March 2015 issue of V-Jump will announce a special manga adaptation of the upcoming movie Dragon Ball Z: Revival of ‘F’, which will be penned by none other than Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission author “Toyotarō“. The adaptation will cover the beginning of the movie and will be split into three parts and will run in consecutive issues of V-Jump, starting with next month’s April 2015 issue.

Victory Mission itself was moved from the print magazine to “V-Jump+” digital bonus content via the Shōnen Jump+ app as of the February 2015 issue, then was announced to be going on hiatus for an unspecified timeframe. This announcement appears to explain the reason for that series’ break.

For Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (the 2013 film), Dragon Ball SD author Naho Ooishi drew a 12-page adaptation that was published in the April 2013 issue of Saikyō Jump (and subsequently included in the second collected volume), which also covered just the beginning of the film. Toyotarō himself, meanwhile, penned a single-page gag comic accompanying the interview with him and Ooishi in the May 2013 issue of V-Jump, in which the main characters of Victory Mission are thrown into the movie in-progress. Even earlier than that, Naho Ooishi drew a two-part manga adaptation of the 2008 Jump Super Anime Tour special, which ran in the May and June 2009 issues of V-Jump.

“Toyotarō” himself is likely another name for the artist “Toyble”, who draws a popular dōjinshi (self-published fan comic) borrowing the mythical “Dragon Ball AF” name. Toyble’s output has slowed to a virtual standstill since the start of Victory Mission, lending support to the belief that he and “Toyotarō” are one and the same.

The story for Revival of “F” is being crafted by original manga author Akira Toriyama, who stated he is writing it, “…as though it were a continuation of the manga when it was in serialization,” and that while it will, “…of course be a continuation of the previous Battle of Gods,” he has also, “…deliberately increased the amount of action scenes by a good deal.” Tadayoshi Yamamuro, who worked for many years as character designer and animation supervisor on the Dragon Ball franchise, will serve as the film’s director and animation supervisor. Norihito Sumitomo will return from Battle of Gods and the Majin Boo arc of Dragon Ball Kai for musical composition duties. Momoiro Clover Z will contribute a song alongside Maximum the Hormone, whose “F” will be used as a “battle song” during the film. Revival of “F” is set to bring back Freeza and will also include two new characters (Sorbet and Tagoma), feature Beerus and Whis again from Battle of Gods, and much more.

The March 2015 issue of V-Jump will also both announce and provide a chance to enter a preview screening for the new movie.

The North American official PlayStation Blog has announced the top-selling games from the PlayStation Network’s digital storefront. On the Vita, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z came in as the fourth-best-selling game for the 2014 calendar year.

Battle of Z was released digital-only for the Vita in most international territories, while the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions received both physical and digital releases. A physical Vita release was produced in Japan.

The Vita game was a part of several promotions over the course of the year, including April’s “Golden Week Sale” and August’s “Anime Sale”.

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z, developed by Artdink for Bandai Namco, was released worldwide in January 2014 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Vita.

Anime News Network reports that the upcoming 2015 #8 issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump in Japan spills the beans on more history-bending hijinks coming to Dragon Ball XENOVERSE.

In addition to taking control over and powering-up other villains, Towa’s quest to change history for the worse will apparently see even Goku’s allies affected. Not even Mr. Satan is immune to this evil power.

A small splash provides our first real look at a new character with a sinister smirk (possibly the mysterious “Demigra”), who stands behind Towa and is apparently the root of these characters’ fiendish power-ups.

A splash also reviews the first-press inclusions (“patrol perks”) for the game in Japan: a download code to obtain Jaco as a playable character, a download code to obtain a Kame-sen’nin character customization set, the Dragon Ball Heroes card “Trunks: Xeno”, and a serial code to obtain “Trunks: Xeno” within the Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle smartphone game.

Japanese idol group Momoiro Clover Z will contribute a song to the upcoming theatrical film Dragon Ball Z: Revival of “F”.

momoiro_clover_revival_of_f

Toei Animation producer Norihiro Hayashida explained the reason for this “ZxZ Collaboration” (referencing the “Z” from both Dragon Ball Z and “Momoiro Clover Z”), saying that Toei made them the offer after hearing the group were all big fans of Dragon Ball, and understood the series’ world very well. He also expressed his hope that the synergy through the shared “Z” in their name would help make the film a big hit.

Comments from the group members were printed alongside the Natalie article:

RENI TAKAGI:

お父さんが食い入るようにドラゴンボールをみていて、小さい頃私も一緒に見てたので高城家親子共々感動です!そして幅広い層から愛されてるアニメなので頑張ります!

My dad watched Dragon Ball voraciously, and I also watched it with him when I was little, so it was moving for both father and daughter in the Takagi household! It’s an animation beloved by a wide range of people, so I’ll do my best!

SHIORI TAMAI:

ドラゴンボールというとても歴史のある、日本の代表といってもいいアニメの主題歌をさせていただけてとても光栄です。Zという共通点もありますし、ドラゴンボールファンの方々にも愛される曲になれば嬉しいです!

It’s a real honor to have the privilege of doing the theme song for Dragon Ball, an animation with a long history, and which you could even call representative of Japan. We have a “Z” in common, so I’ll be happy if it becomes a song that’s loved by fans of Dragon Ball!

AYAKA SASAKI:

私たちがZになった時からずっと意識していたドラゴンボールさんの主題歌を歌わせていただけるなんてすごくうれしいしとても気合いが入ります!気合いが入りすぎて、今にもかめはめ波が出ちゃいそうです。

I’m incredibly happy and really enthusiastic to have the chance to sing the theme song for Dragon Ball, [our connection with] which we’ve been conscious of ever since we became [Momoiro Clover] Z [in 2011]. I’m so overexcited, it feels like I could let loose a kamehameha at any moment.

KANAKO MOMOTA:

ドラゴンボールとももクロでどんなものが出来上がるのか私たちもわくわくしてます!! 元気をたくさんの人に分けれるような曲になればいいなと思います\(^^)/逆元気玉みたいな!笑

Even we’re excited to see what will result from [the combination of] Dragon Ball and MomoClo!! I hope it will be the kind of song that gives energy to lots of people \(^^)/ like a reverse genki-dama! (laughs)

Momoiro Clover Z recently contributed their performance to the opening theme for Sailor Moon Crystal, “Moon Pride”.

“F” by Maximum the Hormone will also be used as a “battle song” in the film, having been acknowledged as an inspiration for the film’s title and content.

The official website for Dragon Ball Heroes — the four-year-old, still-going-strong, card-based arcade game — has updated with a slew of promotional material for its upcoming Ja’aku Ryū Mishion 8 (“Evil Dragons Mission 8” or “JM8”) update coming this month. This is the final “JM” update to the series, which will continue onward with the “God Mission” series this spring.

The 15-second commercial provides a brief overview of the new cards, specifically focusing on the One Star Dragon and his Card Action Ability “Dark Dragon” (also shown off last month in the 28th chapter of Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission), as well as Super Saiyan 4 and Golden Ōzaru versions of Gogeta. Two “secret” cards are also teased.

The 30-second “Special Movie” acts as the sort of “opening” theme and animation for the update, once again spotlighting the One-Star Dragon and Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta, as well as calling back to Adult Gotenks and the class-upgraded Hero Avatars, both of which were introduced during the various “Evil Dragon Mission” updates.

The four-minute-long “How to Play” video provides an overview of just that along with showcasing the One Star Dragon’s “Dark Dragon” technique in action (stealing your opponent’s energy to then hit them with a massive attack), and teasing campaigns at arcade units involving defeating the various Evil Dragons to increase your experience, but also revealing something wrong with a new Age (possibly tying in to the upcoming “God Mission 1” update). The video closes out with a tease for “GDM 1” coming later this year.

The “JM8” update to Dragon Ball Heroes will be released 15 January 2015.

Today’s 2015 #6/7 double-issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump in Japan contains a batch of scoops for 2015’s upcoming Dragon Ball Z theatrical film, Revival of “F”.

revival_of_f_-_kuririn_design

A splash announces that “F” by Maximum the Hormone will appear in the movie as an insert song. Original manga author — and writer for the new film — Akira Toriyama has stated that the band’s 2008 song influenced his decision on the film’s title.

The magazine mentions the new design for Gohan (previously revealed in the February 2015 issue of V-Jump) as well as a new design for Kuririn:

Some quite surprising design images have arrived!! It’s Gohan, who for some reason is in a tracksuit, and Kuririn, dressed as a police officer!! Just what happened after the last movie?!

A further blurb goes on to describe Kuririn’s new design:

His hairstyle has gone from spiky in the last movie back to clean-shaven! He also looks surprisingly good in a police uniform.

The letters “SCPD” are also visible on Kuririn’s badge; while the text makes no mention of this, it is likely an abbreviation for “Satan City Police Department”.

Revival of “F” is set to bring back Freeza and will also include two new characters (Sorbet and Tagoma), feature Beerus and Whis again from Battle of Gods, and much more.

Revival of “F” opens 18 April 2015 nationwide in Japan in 2D and 3D.
