"The 12 Gods of Destruction" is the twenty-eighth chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga series written and illustrated by Toyotarō, with supervision and guidance from original Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama. It was first published in Japan in the November 2017 issue of Shueisha's V-Jump, with a sale date of 21 September 2017.
Summary
Goku has disappeared, off to visit with the Omni-King to discuss an inter-universal tournament. Beerus seemingly accepts responsibility for this horrible situation, with his and Champa's previous Universe 6 vs. 7 tournament being the cause for the Omni-King's notice.
The future and present Omni-Kings appear to be playing a sort of chess game against each other, but stop to inquire with the Great Priest about the mortal levels in the various universes. Universe 1 is in the lead as expected, with Universe 12 following. There has not been much change with the others, who in fact all may have actually decreased slightly. The Omni-Kings see no reason to keep all 12, and are losing interest in observing them. They collectively decide to keep just four universes and erase the other eight. The Great Priest agrees, and asks that the guide angels from those universes be withdrawn.
Just then, Goku arrives! The Great Priest can tell that Goku would like to ask a favor. Goku says that he does not remember which one he promised, but they had talked about the inter-universal tournament and wants to know how that planning is going. The respective Omni-King has apparently forgotten, but they should do that soon! The Great Priest says they should give the universes time to prepare; five "tiks" from now should be sufficient (roughly 40 hours in Earth time). Goku figures he should run off and get prepared as soon as possible, but the Great Priest informs Goku that he must wait while he informs the other Gods of Destruction. Using his staff, the Great Priest calls out to all of the guide angels.
Various Gods of Destruction tune in to the message, including Gowasu from Universe 10, who is in the process of being chewed out over the Zamasu situation by his God of Destruction. One God of Destruction in particular, Vermoud, is surrounded by a harem of ladies, noting that today marks 87,910,715 days since he became a God of Destruction. As his angel attempts to inform him of the Great Priest's call, one of the women get angry and pulls a knife on the angel. The woman is destroyed by Vermoud, who notes he was going to destroy the entire planet, anyway.
The Great Priest calls all of the angels, Gods of Destruction, and Kaiōshin of the respective universes to the Omni-King's palace. Other than the Kaiōshin from Universe 8 who has just entered the bathroom, the others are all ready to arrive. Each of the various gods appear, forming kneeling lines on either side of the room. Universe 11's God of Destruction, Vermoud, has brought an additional attendee with him: Toppo, a warrior that is also a candidate for God of Destruction upon Vermoud's upcoming retirement. Universe 8's group of gods arrive, completing the audience.
The Great Priest informs everyone that in five tiks (157 o'clock on day 3,135,500,603 of the king calendar), they shall hold a "Tournament of Power" with competitors from each universe. Universe 3's seemingly-robotic God of Destruction appears to be concerned over having such little time to prepare, but when one of the Omni-Kings question this being an issue, the universe's angel, Camparri, quickly fibs to say that Mosco, the God of Destruction, believes it is wonderful that they can participate so soon.
The present-day Omni-King points to the future Omni-King, saying that he does not know anything about what is going on. The Great Priest advises that they hold a "Zen Exhibition Match", and quickly creates a tournament arena, separating each universe onto individual floating platforms, and inviting all of the Gods of Destruction to enter the stage. As the Gods all showcase signs of shock and hesitation, one of the Omni-Kings bluntly tells them to hurry up. The Great Priest explains that all are to give it their all during the fight or face erasure at the hands of the Omni-Kings. Beerus gets into a spat with Quitela, the God of Destruction from Universe 4, who apparently beat him in an arm wrestling contest once before. Goku cheers on Beerus, who chastises him as the one responsible for this mess. Upon hearing this, the other Gods of Destruction all turn their attention to Beerus.
Whis explains to Goku and their Kaiōshin that, long ago, they once held an inter-universal game of hide and seek at the behest of the Omni-King. The game was unfortunately cancelled because Beerus fell asleep for 50 years after hiding. The Omni-King became furious, and the other universes all had to placate him to avoid his outrage and possible erasure. As such, they have all held a grudge against Beerus ever since.
As expected, all of the other Gods of Destruction attack Beerus as the fight begins. Beerus is able to dodge most of their attacks, with Whis commenting to Goku how his body can sense attacks and make the decision to dodge all on its own. Mosco ends up capturing Beerus between his hands, though Beerus breaks free before taking a kick from Quitela. Some of the other gods mistakenly attack Champa instead of Beerus, who takes the opportunity to fire a massive blast their way, though Sidra creates a barrier to protect them. Vermoud jumps in and quickly kicks Sidra away, noting how many openings there were to attack just then; after all, only one universe can be the winner! Both of the Omni-Kings, along with Goku, all appear more and more excited over the prospect of the tournament.

Adaptation
Important notes on the Viz English adaptation of this chapter:
- After Vermoud destroys the jester woman who threatened Markarita, he says that she was a resident of a planet that was slated to be destroyed, anyway (もともと破壊する予定の星の住人だ). The Viz translation reads: "I was going to destroy this planet anyway." The scene actually takes place on Vermoud's planet; in chapter 30, the exterior of the planet is seen for the first time, and Vermoud is still with Markarita in the same room where the woman was destroyed. Toppo and Cae are there, but the jester women are nowhere to be seen.
Anime
The events of the manga and the anime diverge significantly. Below are the main differences, along with the episodes where the events of this chapter occur or contrast.
- In episode 77, the Omni-Kings are playing a game with planets, but they do not discuss destroying any universes before Goku arrives. The fact that they were already planning to destroy the lower-level universes is not mentioned until episode 80.
- The Omni-Kings have two attendants each in the anime, for a total of four. In the manga, they only have two between them. In both the manga and the anime, Future Omni-King did not have any attendants with him when he answered Goku's call, or when Goku went to fetch him from the empty timeline. Later in the anime, the Omni-Kings are seen with only two attendants.
- In the anime, Future Omni-King tries (and repeatedly fails) to mirror his counterpart's actions.
- When Goku reminds the Omni-King about the tournament in the anime, Future Omni-King asks what that is, and Present Omni-King explains that it is a lot of fun. Future Omni-King wants to know if it is more fun than their game, and his counterpart assures him that it is. In his excitement, Future Omni-King accidentally destroys a planet.
- Great Priest then tells them that he will inform all the Kaiōshin about the details as soon as they are ironed out.
- Goku returns to Beerus' planet after this in the anime. He informs Beerus that the tournament is happening, and asks Whis to take him to the Universe 7 Kaiōshim Realm to await the Great Priest's communication. Beerus comes along, and when they arrive, he complains that their planet is boring, and demands tea.
- As soon as Beerus gets his tea, the Great Priest arrives to tell them about the details of the Tournament of Power: it will be held on Day 3,135,500,603 of the Royal Calendar at 157:00, with ten warriors from each universe. Goku is getting excited!
- These details are all revealed in chapter 28, except for the number of warriors who will be competing (ten). This is not revealed until chapter 30 in the manga, where the explanation is interrupted by Future Omni-King's desire for a demonstration, starting the manga's version of the Zen Exhibition Match, using the Gods of Destruction.
- Episode 77 ends with a teaser montage of the Universe 7 warriors who had already been promoted as the Tournament of Power participants (in the same V-Jump where chapter 19 was published):[1][2] Piccolo, Tenshinhan (who is with Chiaotzu), the Turtle Hermit (who is with Umigame), Gohan (with Videl and Pan), Vegeta (still in the gazebo where Goku left him), No. 17, Kuririn and No. 18 (with Marron), and finally Majin Boo (with Mister Satan). These names are not fleshed out until chapter 30 of the manga.
- The Zen Exhibition Match is not mentioned until the beginning of episode 78. But first, the Great Priest tells them that the losing universes will be erased, something else that is not mentioned until chapter 30 in the manga. The Great Priest tells them that they did not intend to reveal this until later, but since Goku is the Omni-King's friend... (The other universes are informed in episode 80.) He also reveals a few other details of the tournament that are not revealed in this chapter of the manga: the World of Void as the location, and the Super Dragon Balls as the prize.
- Before his departure in the anime, the Great Priest tells them that the Future Omni-King has never seen a tournament before, and he is impatient to witness what it is like. He gives them one hour to gather their three contestants and report to the Omni-King's Palace.
- The Zen Exhibition Match takes an entirely different form in the anime: the best of three matches between members of Universe 7 and Universe 9, the two lowest-ranked universes. This takes place over the course of episodes 79 to 82.
- The arena and the spectator platforms for each universe are more or less the same, but in the anime version, the members of those universes meet in the palace foyer beforehand, and they are depicted as sinking through the floor to fall on their platforms. The participating universes have larger platforms than the non-participating universes.
- In the anime version, Toppo is the only mortal present outside of those from Universes 7 and 9, and he is hooded when he first appears in episode 78. It is not revealed that he is a candidate to be a God of Destruction until episode 125, near the end of the Tournament of Power. Cae introduces Toppo to the Omni-Kings as his "bodyguard" in episode 82.
- The Gods of Destruction do not fight each other in the anime's version of the Zen Exhibition Match, but the gods from three of the four exempt universes (Iwen, Arak, Liquir of universes 1, 5, and 8 respectively) have a short match to test out the durability of the Tournament of Power arena in episode 96.
- In the anime, Quitela is not named as the God of Destruction who beat Beerus at arm-wrestling. Instead, Whis mentions in episode 93 that there is a universe with a mortal that his own God of Destruction cannot beat. Whis says this God of Destruction is stronger than Beerus, but Beerus protests that he only lost one arm-wrestling match. In episode 110, Whis takes Jiren's strength as confirmation of this rumor, implying that Vermoud was the God of Destruction who beat Beerus at arm-wrestling. This chapter was released on 21 September 2017, and episode 110 of the anime was released on 08 October 2017.
Notes
- The chapter's official release came seven months after the (very-roughly) corresponding TV episode content began, significantly deviating from the television series' events.
- Goku addresses the two Omni-Kings with his usual lack of formality: オッス！全ちゃんたち (Ossu! Zen-chan-tachi), which Viz adapts in their English translation as, "What's up?! Zen-chans."
- In conjunction with Jump Festa 2017, Shueisha and Toei Animation released a promotional trailer for the Universe Survival arc in December 2016.[3] The trailer showed off what appeared to be scenes from upcoming manga chapters, though very little — if any — of what is seen actually appears as-is here in the chapter some nine months later.

- In particular, the closest approximation of the shot detailing all of the Gods of Destruction is very different, with no cloaked figures, and Goku present in the foreground. This may have been an early composition, a compromise due to perhaps unfinished character designs, or any other number of reasons.
- Other than Beerus, Whis, Shin, Champa, Vados, and Gowasu, all of the various Gods of Destruction, Kaiōshin, and angel names are debuted here in the manga for their respective first time.
